Mt 26MateusMt 28
AMP
1When it was morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) conferred together against Jesus, to put Him to death ;
MSG
1In the first light of dawn, all the high priests and religious leaders met and put the finishing touches on their plot to kill Jesus.
AMP
2so they bound Him, and led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the governor .
MSG
2Then they tied him up and paraded him to Pilate, the governor.
AMP
3When Judas, His betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was gripped with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,
MSG
3Judas, the one who betrayed him, realized that Jesus was doomed. Overcome with remorse, he gave back the thirty silver coins to the high priests,
AMP
4saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." They replied, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!"
MSG
4saying, "I've sinned. I've betrayed an innocent man." They said, "What do we care? That's your problem!"
AMP
5And throwing the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary, he left; and went away and hanged himself.
MSG
5Judas threw the silver coins into the Temple and left. Then he went out and hung himself.
AMP
6The chief priests, picking up the pieces of silver, said, "It is not lawful to put these in the treasury , because it is the price of blood."
MSG
6The high priests picked up the silver pieces, but then didn't know what to do with them. "It wouldn't be right to give this—a payment for murder!—as an offering in the Temple."
AMP
7So after consultation they used the money to buy the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers.
MSG
7They decided to get rid of it by buying the "Potter's Field" and use it as a burial place for the homeless.
AMP
8Therefore that piece of ground has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
MSG
8That's how the field got called "Murder Meadow," a name that has stuck to this day.
AMP
9Then the words spoken by Jeremiah the prophet were fulfilled: "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him on whom a price had been set by the sons of Israel;
MSG
9Then Jeremiah's words became history: They took the thirty silver pieces, The price of the one priced by some sons of Israel,
AMP
10and they gave them for the Potter's Field, as the Lord directed me."
MSG
10And they purchased the potter's field. And so they unwittingly followed the divine instructions to the letter.
AMP
11Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said to him, "It is as you say."
MSG
11Jesus was placed before the governor, who questioned him: "Are you the 'King of the Jews'?" Jesus said, "If you say so."
AMP
12But when the charges were brought against Him by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer.
MSG
12But when the accusations rained down hot and heavy from the high priests and religious leaders, he said nothing.
AMP
13Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?"
MSG
13Pilate asked him, "Do you hear that long list of accusations? Aren't you going to say something?"
AMP
14But Jesus did not reply to him, not even to a single accusation, so that the governor was greatly astonished.
MSG
14Jesus kept silence—not a word from his mouth. The governor was impressed, really impressed.
AMP
15Now at the feast the governor was in the habit of setting free any one prisoner whom the people chose.
MSG
15It was an old custom during the Feast for the governor to pardon a single prisoner named by the crowd.
AMP
16And at that time they were holding a notorious prisoner , called Barabbas.
MSG
16At the time, they had the infamous Jesus Barabbas in prison.
AMP
17So when they had assembled , Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to set free for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"
MSG
17With the crowd before him, Pilate said, "Which prisoner do you want me to pardon: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus the so-called Christ?"
AMP
18For Pilate knew that it was because of jealousy that the chief priests and elders had handed Jesus over to him.
MSG
18He knew it was through sheer spite that they had turned Jesus over to him.
AMP
19While he was seated on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, "Have nothing to do with that righteous and innocent Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him."
MSG
19While court was still in session, Pilate's wife sent him a message: "Don't get mixed up in judging this noble man. I've just been through a long and troubled night because of a dream about him."
AMP
20But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.
MSG
20Meanwhile, the high priests and religious leaders had talked the crowd into asking for the pardon of Barabbas and the execution of Jesus.
AMP
21The governor said to them, "Which of the two do you wish me to set free for you?" And they said, "Barabbas."
MSG
21The governor asked, "Which of the two do you want me to pardon?" They said, "Barabbas!"
AMP
22Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all replied, "Let Him be crucified!"
MSG
22"Then what do I do with Jesus, the so-called Christ?" They all shouted, "Nail him to a cross!"
AMP
23And he said, "Why, what has He done that is evil?" But they continued shouting all the louder, "Let Him be crucified!"
MSG
23He objected, "But for what crime?" But they yelled all the louder, "Nail him to a cross!"
AMP
24So when Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but rather that a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands in the presence of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this Man's blood; see to that yourselves."
MSG
24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere and that a riot was imminent, he took a basin of water and washed his hands in full sight of the crowd, saying, "I'm washing my hands of responsibility for this man's death. From now on, it's in your hands. You're judge and jury."
AMP
25And all the people answered, "Let His blood be on us and on our children!"
MSG
25The crowd answered, "We'll take the blame, we and our children after us."
AMP
26So he set Barabbas free for them; but after having Jesus severely whipped (scourged), he handed Him over to be crucified.
MSG
26Then he pardoned Barabbas. But he had Jesus whipped, and then handed over for crucifixion.
AMP
27Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and they gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.
MSG
27The soldiers assigned to the governor took Jesus into the governor's palace and got the entire brigade together for some fun.
AMP
28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on Him .
MSG
28They stripped him and dressed him in a red toga.
AMP
29And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a reed in His right hand . Kneeling before Him, they ridiculed Him, saying, "Hail (rejoice), King of the Jews!"
MSG
29They plaited a crown from branches of a thorn bush and set it on his head. They put a stick in his right hand for a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mocking reverence: "Bravo, King of the Jews!" they said. "Bravo!"
AMP
30They spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him repeatedly on the head.
MSG
30Then they spit on him and hit him on the head with the stick.
AMP
31After they finished ridiculing Him, they stripped Him of the scarlet robe and put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
MSG
31When they had had their fun, they took off the toga and put his own clothes back on him. Then they proceeded out to the crucifixion.
AMP
32Now as they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, whom they forced into service to carry the cross of Jesus.
MSG
32Along the way they came on a man from Cyrene named Simon and made him carry Jesus' cross.
AMP
33And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull,
MSG
33Arriving at Golgotha, the place they call "Skull Hill,"
AMP
34they offered Him wine mixed with gall (myrrh, a bitter-tasting narcotic) to drink; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it.
MSG
34they offered him a mild painkiller (a mixture of wine and myrrh), but when he tasted it he wouldn't drink it.
AMP
35And when they had crucified Him, they divided His clothes among them by casting lots.
MSG
35After they had finished nailing him to the cross and were waiting for him to die, they whiled away the time by throwing dice for his clothes.
AMP
36Then sitting down there, they began to keep watch over Him .
MSG
AMP
37And above His head they put the accusation against Him which read, " THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."
MSG
37Above his head they had posted the criminal charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
AMP
38At the same time two robbers were crucified with Jesus, one on the right and one on the left.
MSG
38Along with him, they also crucified two criminals, one to his right, the other to his left.
AMP
39Those who passed by were hurling abuse at Him and jeering at Him, wagging their heads ,
MSG
39People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament:
AMP
40and they said , "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself ! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."
MSG
40"You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days—so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you're really God's Son, come down from that cross!"
AMP
41In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, mocked Him, saying,
MSG
41The high priests, along with the religion scholars and leaders, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him:
AMP
42"He saved others ; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him and acknowledge Him.
MSG
42"He saved others—he can't save himself! King of Israel, is he? Then let him get down from that cross. We'll all become believers then!
AMP
43He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
MSG
43He was so sure of God—well, let him rescue his 'Son' now—if he wants him! He did claim to be God's Son, didn't he?"
AMP
44The robbers who had been crucified with Him also began to insult Him in the same way.
MSG
44Even the two criminals crucified next to him joined in the mockery.
AMP
45Now from the sixth hour (noon) there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.).
MSG
45From noon to three, the whole earth was dark.
AMP
46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
MSG
46Around mid-afternoon Jesus groaned out of the depths, crying loudly, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"
AMP
47When some of the bystanders there heard it, they began saying, "This man is calling for Elijah."
MSG
47Some bystanders who heard him said, "He's calling for Elijah."
AMP
48Immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, soaked it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.
MSG
48One of them ran and got a sponge soaked in sour wine and lifted it on a stick so he could drink.
AMP
49But the rest said, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him ."
MSG
49The others joked, "Don't be in such a hurry. Let's see if Elijah comes and saves him."
AMP
50And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit .
MSG
50But Jesus, again crying out loudly, breathed his last.
AMP
51And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; the earth shook and the rocks were split apart.
MSG
51At that moment, the Temple curtain was ripped in two, top to bottom. There was an earthquake, and rocks were split in pieces.
AMP
52The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints (God's people) who had fallen asleep were raised ;
MSG
52What's more, tombs were opened up, and many bodies of believers asleep in their graves were raised.
AMP
53and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered the holy city (Jerusalem) and appeared to many people.
MSG
53(After Jesus' resurrection, they left the tombs, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.)
AMP
54Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, they were terribly frightened and filled with awe, and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"
MSG
54The captain of the guard and those with him, when they saw the earthquake and everything else that was happening, were scared to death. They said, "This has to be the Son of God!"
AMP
55There were also many women there looking on from a distance, who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him.
MSG
55There were also quite a few women watching from a distance, women who had followed Jesus from Galilee in order to serve him.
AMP
56Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons .
MSG
56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the Zebedee brothers.
AMP
57When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus.
MSG
57Late in the afternoon a wealthy man from Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus, arrived. His name was Joseph.
AMP
58He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus , and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
MSG
58He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Pilate granted his request.
AMP
59And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth (burial wrapping),
MSG
59Joseph took the body and wrapped it in clean linens,
AMP
60and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock; and he rolled a large stone over the entrance of the tomb and went away.
MSG
60put it in his own tomb, a new tomb only recently cut into the rock, and rolled a large stone across the entrance. Then he went off.
AMP
61And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
MSG
61But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary stayed, sitting in plain view of the tomb.
AMP
62The next day, that is, the day after the preparation , the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled before Pilate,
MSG
62After sundown, the high priests and Pharisees arranged a meeting with Pilate.
AMP
63and said, "Sir, we have remembered that when He was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise .'
MSG
63They said, "Sir, we just remembered that that liar announced while he was still alive, 'After three days I will be raised.'
AMP
64Therefore, give orders to have the tomb made secure and safeguarded until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and tell the people, 'He has risen from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first ."
MSG
64We've got to get that tomb sealed until the third day. There's a good chance his disciples will come and steal the corpse and then go around saying, 'He's risen from the dead.' Then we'll be worse off than before, the final deceit surpassing the first."
AMP
65Pilate said to them, "You have a guard ; go , make the tomb as secure as you know how."
MSG
65Pilate told them, "You will have a guard. Go ahead and secure it the best you can."
AMP
66So they went and made the tomb secure, and along with a guard of soldiers they set a seal on the stone.
MSG
66So they went out and secured the tomb, sealing the stone and posting guards.
