MSG
1Once everyone was accounted for and we realized we had all made it, we learned that we were on the island of Malta.
NABRE
1Once we had reached safety we learned that the island was called Malta.
MSG
2The natives went out of their way to be friendly to us. The day was rainy and cold and we were already soaked to the bone, but they built a huge bonfire and gathered us around it.
NABRE
2The natives showed us extraordinary hospitality; they lit a fire and welcomed all of us because it had begun to rain and was cold.
MSG
3Paul pitched in and helped. He had gathered up a bundle of sticks, but when he put it on the fire, a venomous snake, roused from its torpor by the heat, struck his hand and held on.
NABRE
3Paul had gathered a bundle of brushwood and was putting it on the fire when a viper, escaping from the heat, fastened on his hand.
MSG
4Seeing the snake hanging from Paul's hand like that, the natives jumped to the conclusion that he was a murderer getting his just deserts.
NABRE
4When the natives saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to one another, "This man must certainly be a murderer; though he escaped the sea, Justice has not let him remain alive."
MSG
5Paul shook the snake off into the fire, none the worse for wear.
NABRE
5But he shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no harm.
MSG
6They kept expecting him to drop dead, but when it was obvious he wasn't going to, they jumped to the conclusion that he was a god!
NABRE
6They were expecting him to swell up or suddenly to fall down dead but, after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and began to say that he was a god.
MSG
7The head man in that part of the island was Publius. He took us into his home as his guests, drying us out and putting us up in fine style for the next three days.
NABRE
7In the vicinity of that place were lands belonging to a man named Publius, the chief of the island. He welcomed us and received us cordially as his guests for three days.
MSG
8Publius's father was sick at the time, down with a high fever and dysentery. Paul went to the old man's room, and when he laid hands on him and prayed, the man was healed.
NABRE
8It so happened that the father of Publius was sick with a fever and dysentery. Paul visited him and, after praying, laid his hands on him and healed him.
MSG
9Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick came and got healed.
NABRE
9After this had taken place, the rest of the sick on the island came to Paul and were cured.
MSG
10We spent a wonderful three months on Malta. They treated us royally, took care of all our needs and outfitted us for the rest of the journey.
NABRE
10They paid us great honor and when we eventually set sail they brought us the provisions we needed.
MSG
11When an Egyptian ship that had wintered there in the harbor prepared to leave for Italy, we got on board. The ship had a carved Gemini for its figurehead: "the Heavenly Twins."
NABRE
11Three months later we set sail on a ship that had wintered at the island. It was an Alexandrian ship with the Dioscuri as its figurehead.
MSG
12We put in at Syracuse for three days
NABRE
12We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days,
MSG
13and then went up the coast to Rhegium. Two days later, with the wind out of the south, we sailed into the Bay of Naples.
NABRE
13and from there we sailed round the coast and arrived at Rhegium. After a day, a south wind came up and in two days we reached Puteoli.
MSG
14We found Christian friends there and stayed with them for a week. And then we came to Rome.
NABRE
14There we found some brothers and were urged to stay with them for seven days. And thus we came to Rome.
MSG
15Friends in Rome heard we were on the way and came out to meet us. One group got as far as Appian Court; another group met us at Three Taverns—emotion-packed meetings, as you can well imagine. Paul, brimming over with praise, led us in prayers of thanksgiving.
NABRE
15The brothers from there heard about us and came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul gave thanks to God and took courage.
MSG
16When we actually entered Rome, they let Paul live in his own private quarters with a soldier who had been assigned to guard him.
NABRE
16When he entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.
MSG
17Three days later, Paul called the Jewish leaders together for a meeting at his house. He said, "The Jews in Jerusalem arrested me on trumped-up charges, and I was taken into custody by the Romans. I assure you that I did absolutely nothing against Jewish laws or Jewish customs.
NABRE
17Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them, "My brothers, although I had done nothing against our people or our ancestral customs, I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem.
MSG
18After the Romans investigated the charges and found there was nothing to them, they wanted to set me free,
NABRE
18After trying my case the Romans wanted to release me, because they found nothing against me deserving the death penalty.
MSG
19but the Jews objected so fiercely that I was forced to appeal to Caesar. I did this not to accuse them of any wrongdoing or to get our people in trouble with Rome. We've had enough trouble through the years that way.
NABRE
19But when the Jews objected, I was obliged to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no accusation to make against my own nation.
MSG
20I did it for Israel. I asked you to come and listen to me today to make it clear that I'm on Israel's side, not against her. I'm a hostage here for hope, not doom."
NABRE
20This is the reason, then, I have requested to see you and to speak with you, for it is on account of the hope of Israel that I wear these chains."
MSG
21They said, "Nobody wrote warning us about you. And no one has shown up saying anything bad about you.
NABRE
21They answered him, "We have received no letters from Judea about you, nor has any of the brothers arrived with a damaging report or rumor about you.
MSG
22But we would like very much to hear more. The only thing we know about this Christian sect is that nobody seems to have anything good to say about it."
NABRE
22But we should like to hear you present your views, for we know that this sect is denounced everywhere."
MSG
23They agreed on a time. When the day arrived, they came back to his home with a number of their friends. Paul talked to them all day, from morning to evening, explaining everything involved in the kingdom of God, and trying to persuade them all about Jesus by pointing out what Moses and the prophets had written about him.
NABRE
23So they arranged a day with him and came to his lodgings in great numbers. From early morning until evening, he expounded his position to them, bearing witness to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus from the law of Moses and the prophets.
MSG
24Some of them were persuaded by what he said, but others refused to believe a word of it.
NABRE
24Some were convinced by what he had said, while others did not believe.
MSG
25When the unbelievers got cantankerous and started bickering with each other, Paul interrupted: "I have just one more thing to say to you. The Holy Spirit sure knew what he was talking about when he addressed our ancestors through Isaiah the prophet:
NABRE
25Without reaching any agreement among themselves they began to leave; then Paul made one final statement. "Well did the holy Spirit speak to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah, saying:
MSG
26Go to this people and tell them this: "You're going to listen with your ears, but you won't hear a word; You're going to stare with your eyes, but you won't see a thing.
NABRE
26'Go to this people and say: You shall indeed hear but not understand. You shall indeed look but never see.
MSG
27These people are blockheads! They stick their fingers in their ears so they won't have to listen; They screw their eyes shut so they won't have to look, so they won't have to deal with me face-to-face and let me heal them."
NABRE
27Gross is the heart of this people;they will not hear with their ears;they have closed their eyes,so they may not see with their eyesand hear with their earsand understand with their heart and be converted, and I heal them.'
MSG
28"You've had your chance. The non-Jewish outsiders are next on the list. And believe me, they're going to receive it with open arms!"
NABRE
28Let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen."
MSG
30Paul lived for two years in his rented house. He welcomed everyone who came to visit.
NABRE
30He remained for two full years in his lodgings. He received all who came to him,
MSG
31He urgently presented all matters of the kingdom of God. He explained everything about Jesus Christ. His door was always open.
NABRE
31and with complete assurance and without hindrance he proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.
