1But a man named Ananias—his wife, Sapphira, conniving in this with him—sold a piece of land,
NLT
1But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property.
MSG
2secretly kept part of the price for himself, and then brought the rest to the apostles and made an offering of it.
NLT
2He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife’s consent, he kept the rest.
MSG
3Peter said, "Ananias, how did Satan get you to lie to the Holy Spirit and secretly keep back part of the price of the field?
NLT
3Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.
MSG
4Before you sold it, it was all yours, and after you sold it, the money was yours to do with as you wished. So what got into you to pull a trick like this? You didn't lie to men but to God."
NLT
4The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!”
MSG
5Ananias, when he heard those words, fell down dead. That put the fear of God into everyone who heard of it.
NLT
5As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified.
MSG
6The younger men went right to work and wrapped him up, then carried him out and buried him.
NLT
6Then some young men got up, wrapped him in a sheet, and took him out and buried him.
MSG
7Not more than three hours later, his wife, knowing nothing of what had happened, came in.
NLT
7About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
MSG
8Peter said, "Tell me, were you given this price for your field?" "Yes," she said, "that price."
NLT
8Peter asked her, “Was this the price you and your husband received for your land?” “Yes,” she replied, “that was the price.”
MSG
9Peter responded, "What's going on here that you connived to conspire against the Spirit of the Master? The men who buried your husband are at the door, and you're next."
NLT
9And Peter said, “How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.”
MSG
10No sooner were the words out of his mouth than she also fell down, dead. When the young men returned they found her body. They carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
NLT
10Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
MSG
11By this time the whole church and, in fact, everyone who heard of these things had a healthy respect for God. They knew God was not to be trifled with.
NLT
11Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had happened.
MSG
12Through the work of the apostles, many God-signs were set up among the people, many wonderful things done. They all met regularly and in remarkable harmony on the Temple porch named after Solomon.
NLT
12The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade.
MSG
13But even though people admired them a lot, outsiders were wary about joining them.
NLT
13But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them.
MSG
14On the other hand, those who put their trust in the Master were added right and left, men and women both.
NLT
14Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord — crowds of both men and women.
MSG
15They even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on stretchers and bedrolls, hoping they would be touched by Peter's shadow when he walked by.
NLT
15As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by.
MSG
16They came from the villages surrounding Jerusalem, throngs of them, bringing the sick and bedeviled. And they all were healed.
NLT
16Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.
MSG
17Provoked mightily by all this, the Chief Priest and those on his side, mainly the sect of Sadducees, went into action,
NLT
17The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.
MSG
18arrested the apostles, and put them in the town jail.
NLT
18They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.
MSG
19But during the night an angel of God opened the jailhouse door and led them out.
NLT
19But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them,
MSG
20He said, "Go to the Temple and take your stand. Tell the people everything there is to say about this Life."
NLT
20“Go to the Temple and give the people this message of life!”
MSG
21Promptly obedient, they entered the Temple at daybreak and went on with their teaching. Meanwhile, the Chief Priest and his cronies convened the High Council, Israel's senate, and sent to the jail to have the prisoners brought in.
NLT
21So at daybreak the apostles entered the Temple, as they were told, and immediately began teaching. When the high priest and his officials arrived, they convened the high council — the full assembly of the elders of Israel. Then they sent for the apostles to be brought from the jail for trial.
MSG
22When the police got there, they couldn't find them anywhere in the jail. They went back and reported,
NLT
22But when the Temple guards went to the jail, the men were gone. So they returned to the council and reported,
MSG
23"We found the jail locked tight as a drum and the guards posted at the doors, but when we went inside we didn't find a soul."
NLT
23“The jail was securely locked, with the guards standing outside, but when we opened the gates, no one was there!”
MSG
24The chief of the Temple police and the high priests were puzzled. "What's going on here anyway?"
NLT
24When the captain of the Temple guard and the leading priests heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all end.
MSG
25Just then someone showed up and said, "Did you know that the men you put in jail are back in the Temple teaching the people?"
NLT
25Then someone arrived with startling news: “The men you put in jail are standing in the Temple, teaching the people!”
MSG
26The chief and his police went and got them, but they handled them gently, fearful that the people would riot and turn on them.
NLT
26The captain went with his Temple guards and arrested the apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people would stone them.
MSG
27Bringing them back, they stood them before the High Council. The Chief Priest said,
NLT
27Then they brought the apostles before the high council, where the high priest confronted them.
MSG
28"Didn't we give you strict orders not to teach in Jesus' name? And here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are trying your best to blame us for the death of this man."
NLT
28“We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man’s name!” he said. “Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”
MSG
29Peter and the apostles answered, "It's necessary to obey God rather than men.
NLT
29But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than any human authority.
MSG
30The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, the One you killed by hanging him on a cross.
NLT
30The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you killed him by hanging him on a cross.
MSG
31God set him on high at his side, Prince and Savior, to give Israel the gift of a changed life and sins forgiven.
NLT
31Then God put him in the place of honor at his right hand as Prince and Savior. He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven.
MSG
32And we are witnesses to these things. The Holy Spirit, whom God gives to those who obey him, corroborates every detail."
NLT
32We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.”
MSG
33When they heard that, they were furious and wanted to kill them on the spot.
NLT
33When they heard this, the high council was furious and decided to kill them.
MSG
34But one of the council members stood up, a Pharisee by the name of Gamaliel, a teacher of God's Law who was honored by everyone. He ordered the men taken out of the room for a short time,
NLT
34But one member, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, who was an expert in religious law and respected by all the people, stood up and ordered that the men be sent outside the council chamber for a while.
MSG
35then said, "Fellow Israelites, be careful what you do to these men.
NLT
35Then he said to his colleagues, “Men of Israel, take care what you are planning to do to these men!
MSG
36Not long ago Theudas made something of a splash, claiming to be somebody, and got about four hundred men to join him. He was killed, his followers dispersed, and nothing came of it.
NLT
36Some time ago there was that fellow Theudas, who pretended to be someone great. About 400 others joined him, but he was killed, and all his followers went their various ways. The whole movement came to nothing.
MSG
37A little later, at the time of the census, Judas the Galilean appeared and acquired a following. He also fizzled out and the people following him were scattered to the four winds.
NLT
37After him, at the time of the census, there was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him, but he was killed, too, and all his followers were scattered.
MSG
38"So I am telling you: Hands off these men! Let them alone. If this program or this work is merely human, it will fall apart,
NLT
38“So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown.
MSG
39but if it is of God, there is nothing you can do about it—and you better not be found fighting against God!"
NLT
39But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!”
MSG
40That convinced them. They called the apostles back in. After giving them a thorough whipping, they warned them not to speak in Jesus' name and sent them off.
NLT
40The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.
MSG
41The apostles went out of the High Council overjoyed because they had been given the honor of being dishonored on account of the Name.
NLT
41The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.
MSG
42Every day they were in the Temple and homes, teaching and preaching Christ Jesus, not letting up for a minute.
NLT
42And every day, in the Temple and from house to house, they continued to teach and preach this message: “Jesus is the Messiah.”
