MSG
1So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides.
WEB
1If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God.
MSG
2Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that's where the action is. See things from his perspective.
WEB
2Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth.
MSG
3Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life.
WEB
3For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
MSG
4When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you'll show up, too—the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ.
WEB
4When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory.
MSG
5And that means killing off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That's a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God.
WEB
5Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry;
MSG
6It's because of this kind of thing that God is about to explode in anger.
WEB
6for which things’ sake the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience.
MSG
7It wasn't long ago that you were doing all that stuff and not knowing any better.
WEB
7You also once walked in those, when you lived in them;
MSG
8But you know better now, so make sure it's all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity, dirty talk.
WEB
8but now you also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth.
MSG
9Don't lie to one another. You're done with that old life. It's like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you've stripped off and put in the fire.
WEB
9Don’t lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his doings,
MSG
10Now you're dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete.
WEB
10and have put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge after the image of his Creator,
MSG
11Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth, slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ.
WEB
11where there can’t be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bondservant, freeman; but Christ is all, and in all.
MSG
12So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline.
WEB
12Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance;
MSG
13Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you.
WEB
13bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.
MSG
14And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.
WEB
14Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.
MSG
15Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness.
WEB
15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
MSG
16Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God!
WEB
16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.
MSG
17Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.
WEB
17Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.
MSG
18Wives, understand and support your husbands by submitting to them in ways that honor the Master.
WEB
18Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
MSG
19Husbands, go all out in love for your wives. Don't take advantage of them.
WEB
19Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them.
MSG
20Children, do what your parents tell you. This delights the Master no end.
WEB
20Children, obey your parents in all things, for this pleases the Lord.
MSG
21Parents, don't come down too hard on your children or you'll crush their spirits.
WEB
21Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged.
MSG
22Servants, do what you're told by your earthly masters. And don't just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best.
WEB
22Servants, obey in all things those who are your masters according to the flesh, not just when they are looking, as men pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing God.
MSG
23Work from the heart for your real Master, for God,
WEB
23And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men,
MSG
24confident that you'll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you're serving is Christ.
WEB
24knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
MSG
25The sullen servant who does shoddy work will be held responsible. Being Christian doesn't cover up bad work.
WEB
25But he who does wrong will receive again for the wrong that he has done, and there is no partiality.
