1Adam slept with Eve his wife. She conceived and had Cain. She said, "I've gotten a man, with God's help!"

1Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, 'I have gotten a manchild with the LORD.'

2Then she had another baby, Abel. Abel was a herdsman and Cain a farmer.

2Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3Time passed. Cain brought an offering to God from the produce of his farm.
NASB
3So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground.

4Abel also brought an offering, but from the firstborn animals of his herd, choice cuts of meat. God liked Abel and his offering,

4Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering;

5but Cain and his offering didn't get his approval. Cain lost his temper and went into a sulk.

5but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.

6God spoke to Cain: "Why this tantrum? Why the sulking?
NASB
6Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
MSG
7If you do well, won't you be accepted? And if you don't do well, sin is lying in wait for you, ready to pounce; it's out to get you, you've got to master it."
NASB
7'If you do well, will not be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.'

8Cain had words with his brother. They were out in the field; Cain came at Abel his brother and killed him.
NASB
8Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

9God said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?"He said, "How should I know? Am I his babysitter?"

9Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Where is Abel your brother?' And he said, 'I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?'

10God said, "What have you done! The voice of your brother's blood is calling to me from the ground.
NASB
10He said, 'What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground.
MSG
11From now on you'll get nothing but curses from this ground; you'll be driven from this ground that has opened its arms to receive the blood of your murdered brother.

11'Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
MSG
12You'll farm this ground, but it will no longer give you its best. You'll be a homeless wanderer on Earth."
NASB
12'When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth.'

13Cain said to God, "My punishment is too much. I can't take it!

13Cain said to the LORD, 'My punishment is too great to bear!

14You've thrown me off the land and I can never again face you. I'm a homeless wanderer on Earth and whoever finds me will kill me."

14'Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.'

15God told him, "No. Anyone who kills Cain will pay for it seven times over." God put a mark on Cain to protect him so that no one who met him would kill him.

15So the LORD said to him, 'Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.' And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.

16Cain left the presence of God and lived in No-Man's-Land, east of Eden.

16Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

17Cain slept with his wife. She conceived and had Enoch. He then built a city and named it after his son, Enoch.

17Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son.

18Enoch had Irad,Irad had Mehujael,Mehujael had Methushael,Methushael had Lamech.

18Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech.

19Lamech married two wives, Adah and Zillah.

19Lamech took to himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah.

20Adah gave birth to Jabal, the ancestor of all who live in tents and herd cattle.

20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and livestock.

21His brother's name was Jubal, the ancestor of all who play the lyre and flute.

22Zillah gave birth to Tubal-Cain, who worked at the forge making bronze and iron tools. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.

22As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23Lamech said to his wives,Adah and Zillah, listen to me;you wives of Lamech, hear me out:I killed a man for wounding me,a young man who attacked me.

23Lamech said to his wives, 'Adah and Zillah, Listen to my voice, You wives of Lamech, Give heed to my speech, For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me;

24If Cain is avenged seven times,for Lamech it's seventy-seven!

24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.'

25Adam slept with his wife again. She had a son whom she named Seth. She said, "God has given me another child in place of Abel whom Cain killed."

25Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, , 'God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him.'

26And then Seth had a son whom he named Enosh.That's when men and women began praying and worshiping in the name of God.

26To Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then began to call upon the name of the LORD.
