1"I made a solemn pact with myselfnever to undress a girl with my eyes.

1"I have made a covenant (agreement) with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?

2So what can I expect from God?What do I deserve from God Almighty above?

2"For what is the portion I would have from God above, And what heritage from the Almighty on high?

3Isn't calamity reserved for the wicked?Isn't disaster supposed to strike those who do wrong?

3"Does not tragedy fall on the unjust And disaster to those who work wickedness?

4Isn't God looking, observing how I live?Doesn't he mark every step I take?

4"Does not God see my ways And count all my steps?

5"Have I walked hand in hand with falsehood,or hung out in the company of deceit?

5"If I have walked with falsehood, Or if my foot has chased after deceit,

6Weigh me on a set of honest scalesso God has proof of my integrity.

6Oh, let Him weigh me with accurate scales, And let God know my integrity.

7If I've strayed off the straight and narrow,wanted things I had no right to,messed around with sin,

7"If my step has turned away from the way , Or if my heart has followed my eyes, Or if any spot has stained my hands,

8Go ahead, then—give my portion to someone who deserves it.

8Then let me plant and another eat , And let my crops be uprooted and ruined.

9"If I've let myself be seduced by a womanand conspired to go to bed with her,

9"If my heart has been enticed and I was made a fool by a woman, Or if I have lurked at my neighbor's door ,

10Fine, my wife has every right to go aheadand sleep with anyone she wants to.

10Let my wife grind for another , And let others kneel down over her.

11For disgusting behavior like that,I'd deserve the worst punishment you could hand out.

11"For adultery is a heinous and lustful crime; Moreover, it would be a sin punishable by the judges.

12Adultery is a fire that burns the house down;I wouldn't expect anything I count dear to survive it.

12"For it is a fire which consumes to Abaddon (destruction, ruin, final torment); And would burn and rage and uproot all my increase .

13"Have I ever been unfair to my employeeswhen they brought a complaint to me?

13"If I have despised and rejected the claim of my male or female servants When they filed a complaint against me,

14What, then, will I do when God confronts me?When God examines my books, what can I say?

14What then could I do when God arises ? When He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?

15Didn't the same God who made me, make them?Aren't we all made of the same stuff, equals before God?

15"Did not He who made me in the womb make my servant, And did not the same One fashion us both in the womb?

16"Have I ignored the needs of the poor,turned my back on the indigent,

16"If I have withheld from the poor what they desired, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to look in vain ,

17Taken care of my own needs and fed my own facewhile they languished?

17Or have eaten my morsel alone, And did not share it with the orphan

18Wasn't my home always open to them?Weren't they always welcome at my table?

18(But from my youth the orphan grew up with me as with a father, And from my mother's womb I have been the widow's guide),

19"Have I ever left a poor family shivering in the coldwhen they had no warm clothes?

19If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, Or any poor person without covering,

20Didn't the poor bless me when they saw me coming,knowing I'd brought coats from my closet?

20If his loins have not thanked and blessed me , And if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep,

21"If I've ever used my strength and influenceto take advantage of the unfortunate,

21If I have lifted my hand against the orphan, Because I saw my help at the gate,

22Go ahead, break both my arms,cut off all my fingers!

22Then let my shoulder fall away from its socket, And my arm be broken off at the elbow.

23The fear of God has kept me from these things—how else could I ever face him?

23"For tragedy from God is a terror to me, And because of His majesty and exaltation I can do nothing .

24"Did I set my heart on making big moneyor worship at the bank?

24"If I have put my trust and confidence in gold, Or have declared fine gold my hope and assurance,

25Did I boast about my wealth,show off because I was well-off?

25If I gloated and rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had obtained so much,

26Was I ever so awed by the sun's brillianceand moved by the moon's beauty

26If I beheld the sun when it shone Or the moon going in its splendor,

27That I let myself become seduced by themand worshiped them on the sly?
AMP
27And my heart became secretly enticed , And my hand threw a kiss from my mouth ,

28If so, I would deserve the worst of punishments,for I would be betraying God himself.

28This also would have been sin calling for judgment, For I would have denied God above.

29"Did I ever crow over my enemy's ruin?Or gloat over my rival's bad luck?
AMP
29"Have I rejoiced at the destruction of the enemy , Or exulted when evil overtook him?

30No, I never said a word of detraction,never cursed them, even under my breath.

30"No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin By cursing my enemy and asking for his life.

31"Didn't those who worked for me say,'He fed us well. There were always second helpings'?
AMP
31"I assure you, the men of my tent have said, 'Who can find one who has not been satisfied with his meat'?

32And no stranger ever had to spend a night in the street;my doors were always open to travelers.

32"The stranger has not lodged in the street, Because I have opened my door to the traveler.

33Did I hide my sin the way Adam did,or conceal my guilt behind closed doors

33"Have I concealed my transgressions like Adam or like other men, By hiding my wickedness in my bosom,

34Because I was afraid what people would say,fearing the gossip of the neighbors so muchThat I turned myself into a recluse?You know good and well that I didn't.

34Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence and did not acknowledge my sin and did not go out of the door?

35"Oh, if only someone would give me a hearing!I've signed my name to my defense—let theAlmighty One answer!I want to see my indictment in writing.

35"Oh, that I had one to listen to me! Look, here is my signature (mark); Let the Almighty answer me! Let my adversary write out His indictment .

36Anyone's welcome to read my defense;I'll write it on a poster and carry it around town.

36"Surely I would bear it on my shoulder, And bind the scroll around my head like a crown.

37I'm prepared to account for every move I've ever made—to anyone and everyone, prince or pauper.

37"I would count out to Him the number of my steps , Approaching His presence as if I were a prince.

38"If the very ground that I farm accuses me,if even the furrows fill with tears from my abuse,

38"For if my land has cried out against me, And its furrows weep together;

39If I've ever raped the earth for my own profitor dispossessed its rightful owners,

39If I have eaten its fruits without paying for them, Or have caused its owners to lose their lives,

40Then curse it with thistles instead of wheat,curse it with weeds instead of barley."The words of Job to his three friends were finished.

40Let thorns grow instead of wheat, And stinkweed and cockleburs instead of barley." So the words of Job are finished.
