1It was an era when there was no king in Israel. A Levite, living as a stranger in the backwoods hill country of Ephraim, got himself a concubine, a woman from Bethlehem in Judah.

1Naqueles dias, quando não havia rei em Israel, um levita que morava em uma parte afastada da região montanhosa de Efraim tomou para si uma concubina de Belém de Judá.

2But she quarreled with him and left, returning to her father's house in Bethlehem in Judah. She was there four months.

3Then her husband decided to go after her and try to win her back. He had a servant and a pair of donkeys with him. When he arrived at her father's house, the girl's father saw him, welcomed him, and made him feel at home.

3seu marido se levantou e foi atrás dela, para conversar com ela e trazê-la de volta. Levava consigo o seu servo e dois jumentos. Ela o levou à casa de seu pai, e, quando este o viu, saiu alegremente ao seu encontro.

4His father-in-law, the girl's father, pressed him to stay. He stayed with him three days; they feasted and drank and slept.

5On the fourth day, they got up at the crack of dawn and got ready to go. But the girl's father said to his son-in-law, "Strengthen yourself with a hearty breakfast and then you can go."

5No quarto dia, ele se levantou bem cedo para partir. Então o pai da moça disse a seu genro: Come para refazer as forças, e depois partireis.

6So they sat down and ate breakfast together.The girl's father said to the man, "Come now, be my guest. Stay the night—make it a holiday."

6Os dois sentaram-se para comer e beber juntos. E o pai da moça disse ao homem: Peço-te que fiques aqui ainda esta noite e alegres o teu coração.

7The man got up to go, but his father-in-law kept after him, so he ended up spending another night.

7Porém o homem levantou-se para partir. Mas como seu sogro insistisse, decidiu passar mais uma noite ali.

8On the fifth day, he was again up early, ready to go. The girl's father said, "You need some breakfast." They went back and forth, and the day slipped on as they ate and drank together.

8No quinto dia, novamente levantaram cedo para partir. Mas o pai da moça disse: Refaze as tuas forças. Fica até o fim do dia. E os dois comeram juntos.

9But the man and his concubine were finally ready to go. Then his father-in-law, the girl's father, said, "Look, the day's almost gone—why not stay the night? There's very little daylight left; stay another night and enjoy yourself. Tomorrow you can get an early start and set off for your own place."

9Então, quando o homem, sua concubina e o servo se levantaram para partir, seu sogro, o pai da moça, lhe disse: Vês que o dia já está quase acabando e já é quase noite. Peço-te que passes a noite aqui e alegres o teu coração. Amanhã bem cedo poderás levantar e ir para tua tenda.

10But this time the man wasn't willing to spend another night. He got things ready, left, and went as far as Jebus (Jerusalem) with his pair of saddled donkeys, his concubine, and his servant.

10Entretanto, o homem não quis passar mais uma noite ali e partiu em direção a Jebus, que é Jerusalém, com os dois jumentos selados e a concubina.

11At Jebus, though, the day was nearly gone. The servant said to his master, "It's late; let's go into this Jebusite city and spend the night."

11Quando se aproximavam de Jebus, o dia já estava acabando. E o servo disse a seu senhor: Peço-te que paremos nesta cidade dos jebuseus e passemos a noite aí.

12But his master said, "We're not going into any city of foreigners. We'll go on to Gibeah."

12Mas o seu senhor lhe respondeu: Não pararemos em nenhuma cidade estrangeira que não seja dos israelitas, mas iremos até Gibeá.

13He directed his servant, "Keep going. Let's go on ahead. We'll spend the night either at Gibeah or Ramah."

13E disse ainda ao servo: Vamos a um destes lugares, Gibeá ou Ramá, e passemos ali a noite.

14So they kept going. As they pressed on, the sun finally left them in the vicinity of Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.

14Continuaram então o caminho, e o sol se pôs quando estavam perto de Gibeá, no território de Benjamim.

15They left the road there to spend the night at Gibeah.The Levite went and sat down in the town square, but no one invited them in to spend the night.

15Por isso foram para lá, a fim de passar a noite. Depois de entrarem na cidade, o levita sentou-se na praça, visto que ninguém os havia recebido em casa para que passassem a noite.

16Then, late in the evening, an old man came in from his day's work in the fields. He was from the hill country of Ephraim and lived temporarily in Gibeah where all the local citizens were Benjaminites.

16Ao anoitecer, um homem idoso, que era da região montanhosa de Efraim, mas morava em Gibeá, estava voltando do trabalho no campo (os homens do lugar eram benjamitas).

17When the old man looked up and saw the traveler in the town square, he said, "Where are you going? And where are you from?"

17Quando levantou os olhos, viu o viajante na praça da cidade e lhe perguntou: Para onde vais? E de onde vens?

18The Levite said, "We're just passing through. We're coming from Bethlehem on our way to a remote spot in the hills of Ephraim. I come from there. I've just made a trip to Bethlehem in Judah and I'm on my way back home, but no one has invited us in for the night.

18Ele respondeu: Estamos de viagem de Belém de Judá para a parte afastada da região montanhosa de Efraim, de onde sou. Fui a Belém de Judá e agora estou indo ao santuário do SENHOR. Mas aqui ninguém me recebeu em sua casa.

19We wouldn't be any trouble: We have food and straw for the donkeys, and bread and wine for the woman, the young man, and me—we don't need anything."

19Temos palha e forragem para os nossos jumentos; também há pão e vinho para mim, para a tua serva, e para o jovem que acompanha os teus servos. Nada nos falta.

20The old man said, "It's going to be all right; I'll take care of you. You aren't going to spend the night in the town square."

20O homem idoso lhe disse: És bem-vindo em minha casa. Cuidarei de tudo o que te faltar. Só não passes a noite na praça.

21He took them home and fed the donkeys. They washed up and sat down to a good meal.

21Assim, levou-o para sua casa e deu ração aos jumentos. Depois de lavarem os pés, comeram e beberam.

22They were relaxed and enjoying themselves when the men of the city, a gang of local hell-raisers all, surrounded the house and started pounding on the door. They yelled for the owner of the house, the old man, "Bring out the man who came to your house. We want to have sex with him."

23He went out and told them, "No, brothers! Don't be obscene—this man is my guest. Don't commit this outrage.

24Look, my virgin daughter and his concubine are here. I'll bring them out for you. Abuse them if you must, but don't do anything so senselessly vile to this man."

25But the men wouldn't listen to him. Finally, the Levite pushed his concubine out the door to them. They raped her repeatedly all night long. Just before dawn they let her go.

25Mas os homens não quiseram ouvi-lo. Então o levita pegou sua concubina e a entregou. Eles a conheceram intimamente e a violentaram a noite toda. Ao amanhecer, eles a deixaram.

26The woman came back and fell at the door of the house where her master was sleeping. When the sun rose, there she was.

27It was morning. Her master got up and opened the door to continue his journey. There she was, his concubine, crumpled in a heap at the door, her hands on the threshold.

27O seu senhor se levantou pela manhã, abriu a porta da casa e saiu para seguir viagem. E a sua concubina estava à porta da casa, com as mãos na soleira da porta.

28"Get up," he said. "Let's get going." There was no answer.

28Ele lhe disse: Levanta-te, vamos! Mas ela não respondeu. Então ele a pôs sobre o jumento, saiu dali e foi para casa.

29He lifted her onto his donkey and set out for home. When he got home he took a knife and dismembered his concubine—cut her into twelve pieces. He sent her, piece by piece, throughout the country of Israel.

29Quando chegou em casa, pegou uma faca e cortou sua concubina em doze pedaços, membro por membro, e os enviou por todo o território de Israel.

30And he ordered the men he sent out, "Say to every man in Israel: 'Has such a thing as this ever happened from the time the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt until now? Think about it! Talk it over. Do something!' "
