1It was an era when there was no king in Israel. A Levite, living as a stranger in the backwoods hill country of Ephraim, got himself a concubine, a woman from Bethlehem in Judah.

1Naqueles dias, em que não havia rei em Israel, houve um homem levita, que, peregrinando nos lados da região montanhosa de Efraim, tomou para si uma concubina de Belém de Judá.

2But she quarreled with him and left, returning to her father's house in Bethlehem in Judah. She was there four months.

2Porém ela se irritou com ele e, deixando-o, voltou para a casa de seu pai, em Belém de Judá, onde ficou durante uns quatro meses.

3Then her husband decided to go after her and try to win her back. He had a servant and a pair of donkeys with him. When he arrived at her father's house, the girl's father saw him, welcomed him, and made him feel at home.

4His father-in-law, the girl's father, pressed him to stay. He stayed with him three days; they feasted and drank and slept.

5On the fourth day, they got up at the crack of dawn and got ready to go. But the girl's father said to his son-in-law, "Strengthen yourself with a hearty breakfast and then you can go."

5No quarto dia, madrugaram e se levantaram para partir. Mas o pai da moça disse a seu genro: — Coma alguma coisa, para você ter mais força para a viagem. Depois disso vocês podem ir embora.

6So they sat down and ate breakfast together.The girl's father said to the man, "Come now, be my guest. Stay the night—make it a holiday."

6Os dois se sentaram, comeram e beberam juntos. Então o pai da moça disse ao homem: — Por favor, fique aqui mais uma noite e alegre o seu coração.

7The man got up to go, but his father-in-law kept after him, so he ended up spending another night.

7Quando o homem se levantou para partir, o seu sogro insistiu para que ficasse, e ele mais uma vez pernoitou ali.

8On the fifth day, he was again up early, ready to go. The girl's father said, "You need some breakfast." They went back and forth, and the day slipped on as they ate and drank together.

8No quinto dia, ele se levantou de madrugada para partir, mas o pai da moça lhe disse: — Coma alguma coisa. Fiquem até o entardecer. E ambos comeram juntos.

9But the man and his concubine were finally ready to go. Then his father-in-law, the girl's father, said, "Look, the day's almost gone—why not stay the night? There's very little daylight left; stay another night and enjoy yourself. Tomorrow you can get an early start and set off for your own place."

9Então o homem se levantou para partir, ele, a sua concubina e o seu servo. Mas o sogro dele, o pai da moça, lhe disse: — Olhe! Está ficando tarde e a noite vem chegando. Passe mais uma noite aqui. Este dia já está acabando. Passe aqui a noite, e alegre o seu coração. Amanhã de madrugada vocês podem se levantar e viajar de volta para casa.

10But this time the man wasn't willing to spend another night. He got things ready, left, and went as far as Jebus (Jerusalem) with his pair of saddled donkeys, his concubine, and his servant.

10Porém o homem não quis passar ali mais uma noite. Ele se levantou, partiu e chegou até a altura de Jebus, isto é, Jerusalém. Com ele iam os dois jumentos encilhados e também a sua concubina.

11At Jebus, though, the day was nearly gone. The servant said to his master, "It's late; let's go into this Jebusite city and spend the night."

11Quando chegaram perto de Jebus, o dia já estava chegando ao fim. Então o servo disse a seu senhor: — Venha, vamos sair da estrada e entrar nessa cidade dos jebuseus e passemos ali a noite.

12But his master said, "We're not going into any city of foreigners. We'll go on to Gibeah."

12Porém o seu senhor lhe disse: — Não vamos entrar em nenhuma cidade estranha, que não seja dos filhos de Israel. Vamos um pouco mais adiante até Gibeá.

13He directed his servant, "Keep going. Let's go on ahead. We'll spend the night either at Gibeah or Ramah."

13E continuou: — Venha, vamos a um desses lugares e pernoitemos em Gibeá ou em Ramá.

14So they kept going. As they pressed on, the sun finally left them in the vicinity of Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.

15They left the road there to spend the night at Gibeah.The Levite went and sat down in the town square, but no one invited them in to spend the night.

15Saíram da estrada para entrar em Gibeá, a fim de, nela, passarem a noite. O levita entrou e se sentou na praça da cidade, porque não houve quem os recolhesse em casa para ali pernoitarem.

16Then, late in the evening, an old man came in from his day's work in the fields. He was from the hill country of Ephraim and lived temporarily in Gibeah where all the local citizens were Benjaminites.

16Eis que, ao anoitecer, um homem velho estava voltando do seu trabalho no campo. Ele era da região montanhosa de Efraim, mas morava em Gibeá. Os outros habitantes do lugar eram benjamitas.

17When the old man looked up and saw the traveler in the town square, he said, "Where are you going? And where are you from?"

18The Levite said, "We're just passing through. We're coming from Bethlehem on our way to a remote spot in the hills of Ephraim. I come from there. I've just made a trip to Bethlehem in Judah and I'm on my way back home, but no one has invited us in for the night.

18O levita respondeu: — Estamos viajando de Belém de Judá para os lados da região montanhosa de Efraim, de onde sou. Fui a Belém de Judá e, agora, estou de viagem para a Casa do SENHOR. Ninguém me recebeu em sua casa,

19We wouldn't be any trouble: We have food and straw for the donkeys, and bread and wine for the woman, the young man, and me—we don't need anything."

19embora tenhamos palha e pasto para os nossos jumentos, e também pão e vinho para mim, e para esta sua serva, e para o moço que vem com estes seus servos. Não nos falta nada.

20The old man said, "It's going to be all right; I'll take care of you. You aren't going to spend the night in the town square."

20Então o velho disse: — Que a paz esteja com você! Tudo o que lhe vier a faltar fique a meu encargo. Só não passem a noite na praça.

21He took them home and fed the donkeys. They washed up and sat down to a good meal.

21Ele os levou para a sua casa e deu pasto aos jumentos. Depois de lavarem os pés, comeram e beberam.

22They were relaxed and enjoying themselves when the men of the city, a gang of local hell-raisers all, surrounded the house and started pounding on the door. They yelled for the owner of the house, the old man, "Bring out the man who came to your house. We want to have sex with him."

22Enquanto eles se alegravam, eis que os homens daquela cidade, homens malignos, cercaram a casa e começaram a bater na porta. E disseram ao velho, o dono da casa: — Traga para fora o homem que entrou em sua casa, para que abusemos dele.

23He went out and told them, "No, brothers! Don't be obscene—this man is my guest. Don't commit this outrage.

23O dono da casa saiu para falar com eles e disse: — Não, meus irmãos, não façam esta maldade. Já que o homem está em minha casa, não façam uma loucura dessas.

24Look, my virgin daughter and his concubine are here. I'll bring them out for you. Abuse them if you must, but don't do anything so senselessly vile to this man."

24Vejam, aqui estão a minha filha virgem e a concubina dele. Vou pôr as duas para fora e vocês poderão abusar delas e fazer o que bem quiserem. Mas não façam uma loucura dessas com este homem!

25But the men wouldn't listen to him. Finally, the Levite pushed his concubine out the door to them. They raped her repeatedly all night long. Just before dawn they let her go.

25Porém aqueles homens não o quiseram ouvir. Então o levita pegou a sua concubina e a entregou a eles do lado de fora. E eles a forçaram e abusaram dela toda a noite até pela manhã; e, quando estava amanhecendo, eles a deixaram.

26The woman came back and fell at the door of the house where her master was sleeping. When the sun rose, there she was.

26Ao amanhecer, a mulher veio e caiu à porta da casa do homem, onde o seu senhor estava hospedado. E ela ficou ali até o clarear do dia.

27It was morning. Her master got up and opened the door to continue his journey. There she was, his concubine, crumpled in a heap at the door, her hands on the threshold.

27De manhã, quando o seu senhor se levantou e abriu as portas da casa, para continuar a viagem, eis que a mulher, sua concubina, jazia à porta da casa, com as mãos sobre a soleira.

28"Get up," he said. "Let's get going." There was no answer.

28Ele lhe disse: — Levante-se, e vamos embora! Porém não houve resposta. Então o homem a pôs sobre o jumento e foi para a sua casa.

29He lifted her onto his donkey and set out for home. When he got home he took a knife and dismembered his concubine—cut her into twelve pieces. He sent her, piece by piece, throughout the country of Israel.

29Chegando a casa, pegou uma faca e cortou o corpo da concubina em doze pedaços. E enviou os pedaços para todas as regiões da terra de Israel.

30And he ordered the men he sent out, "Say to every man in Israel: 'Has such a thing as this ever happened from the time the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt until now? Think about it! Talk it over. Do something!' "

30Todos os que viram isso diziam: — Nunca se fez uma coisa dessas, nem se viu nada semelhante desde o dia em que os filhos de Israel saíram da terra do Egito até o dia de hoje. Pensem nisso, discutam entre si e digam o que se deve fazer.
