NABRE
MSG
1"Don't make idols for yourselves; don't set up an image or a sacred pillar for yourselves, and don't place a carved stone in your land that you can bow down to in worship. I am God, your God.
NABRE
1Do not make idols for yourselves. You shall not erect a carved image or a sacred stone for yourselves, nor shall you set up a carved stone for worship in your land; for I, the Lord, am your God.
MSG
2"Keep my Sabbaths; treat my Sanctuary with reverence. I am God.
NABRE
2Keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary. I am the Lord.
MSG
3"If you live by my decrees and obediently keep my commandments,
NABRE
3If you live in accordance with my statutes and are careful to observe my commandments,
MSG
4I will send the rains in their seasons, the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit.
NABRE
4I will give you your rains in due season, so that the land will yield its crops, and the trees their fruit;
MSG
5You will thresh until the grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting time; you'll have more than enough to eat and will live safe and secure in your land.
NABRE
5your threshing will last till vintage time, and your vintage till the time for sowing, and you will eat your fill of food, and live securely in your land.
MSG
6"I'll make the country a place of peace—you'll be able to go to sleep at night without fear; I'll get rid of the wild beasts; I'll eliminate war.
NABRE
6I will establish peace in the land, and you will lie down to rest with no one to cause you anxiety. I will rid the country of ravenous beasts, and no sword shall sweep across your land.
MSG
7You'll chase out your enemies and defeat them:
NABRE
7You will rout your enemies, and they shall fall before your sword.
MSG
8Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand and do away with them.
NABRE
8Five of you will put a hundred of your foes to flight, and a hundred of you will put to flight ten thousand, till your enemies fall before your sword.
MSG
9I'll give you my full attention: I'll make sure you prosper, make sure you grow in numbers, and keep my covenant with you in good working order.
NABRE
9I will look with favor upon you, and make you fruitful and numerous, as I carry out my covenant with you.
MSG
10You'll still be eating from last year's harvest when you have to clean out the barns to make room for the new crops.
NABRE
10You shall eat the oldest stored harvest, and have to discard it to make room for the new.
MSG
11"I'll set up my residence in your neighborhood; I won't avoid or shun you;
NABRE
11I will set my tabernacle in your midst, and will not loathe you.
MSG
12I'll stroll through your streets. I'll be your God; you'll be my people.
NABRE
12Ever present in your midst, I will be your God, and you will be my people;
MSG
13I am God, your personal God who rescued you from Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians. I ripped off the harness of your slavery so that you can move about freely.
NABRE
13I, the Lord, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be their slaves no more, breaking the bars of your yoke and making you walk erect.
MSG
14"But if you refuse to obey me and won't observe my commandments,
NABRE
14But if you do not heed me and do not keep all these commandments,
MSG
15despising my decrees and holding my laws in contempt by your disobedience, making a shambles of my covenant,
NABRE
15if you reject my statutes and loathe my decrees, refusing to obey all my commandments and breaking my covenant,
MSG
16I'll step in and pour on the trouble: debilitating disease, high fevers, blindness, your life leaking out bit by bit. You'll plant seed but your enemies will eat the crops.
NABRE
16then I, in turn, will do this to you: I will bring terror upon you—with consumption and fever to dim the eyes and sap the life. You will sow your seed in vain, for your enemies will consume the crop.
MSG
17I'll turn my back on you and stand by while your enemies defeat you. People who hate you will govern you. You'll run scared even when there's no one chasing you.
NABRE
17I will turn against you, and you will be beaten down before your enemies and your foes will lord it over you. You will flee though no one pursues you.
MSG
18"And if none of this works in getting your attention, I'll discipline you seven times over for your sins.
NABRE
18If even after this you do not obey me, I will increase the chastisement for your sins sevenfold,
MSG
19I'll break your strong pride: I'll make the skies above you like a sheet of tin and the ground under you like cast iron.
NABRE
19to break your proud strength. I will make the sky above you as hard as iron, and your soil as hard as bronze,
MSG
20No matter how hard you work, nothing will come of it: No crops out of the ground, no fruit off the trees.
NABRE
20so that your strength will be spent in vain; your land will bear no crops, and its trees no fruit.
MSG
21"If you defy me and refuse to listen, your punishment will be seven times more than your sins:
NABRE
21If then you continue hostile, unwilling to obey me, I will multiply my blows sevenfold, as your sins deserve.
MSG
22I'll set wild animals on you; they'll rob you of your children, kill your cattle, and decimate your numbers until you'll think you are living in a ghost town.
NABRE
22I will unleash wild beasts against you, to rob you of your children and wipe out your livestock, till your population dwindles away and your roads become deserted.
MSG
23"And if even this doesn't work and you refuse my discipline and continue your defiance,
NABRE
23If, with all this, you still do not accept my discipline and continue hostile to me,
MSG
24then it will be my turn to defy you. I, yes I, will punish you for your sins seven times over:
NABRE
24I, too, will continue to be hostile to you and I, for my part, will smite you for your sins sevenfold.
MSG
25I'll let war loose on you, avenging your breaking of the covenant; when you huddle in your cities for protection, I'll send a deadly epidemic on you and you'll be helpless before your enemies;
NABRE
25I will bring against you the sword, the avenger of my covenant. Though you then huddle together in your cities, I will send pestilence among you, till you are delivered to the enemy.
MSG
26when I cut off your bread supply, ten women will bake bread in one oven and ration it out. You'll eat, but barely—no one will get enough.
NABRE
26When I break your staff of bread, ten women will need but one oven for baking your bread, and they shall dole it out to you by weight; and though you eat, you shall not be satisfied.
MSG
27"And if this—even this!—doesn't work and you still won't listen, still defy me,
NABRE
27If, despite all this, you disobey and continue hostile to me,
MSG
28I'll have had enough and in hot anger will defy you, punishing you for your sins seven times over:
NABRE
28I will continue in my hostile rage toward you, and I myself will discipline you for your sins sevenfold,
MSG
29famine will be so severe that you'll end up cooking and eating your sons in stews and your daughters in barbecues;
NABRE
29till you begin to eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.
MSG
30I'll smash your sex-and-religion shrines and all the paraphernalia that goes with them, and then stack your corpses and the idol-corpses in the same piles—I'll abhor you;
NABRE
30I will demolish your high places, overthrow your incense stands, and cast your corpses upon the corpses of your idols. In my loathing of you,
MSG
31I'll turn your cities into rubble; I'll clean out your sanctuaries; I'll hold my nose at the "pleasing aroma" of your sacrifices.
NABRE
31I will lay waste your cities and desolate your sanctuaries, refusing your sweet-smelling offerings.
MSG
32I'll turn your land into a lifeless moonscape—your enemies who come in to take over will be shocked at what they see.
NABRE
32So devastated will I leave the land that your enemies who come to live there will stand aghast at the sight of it.
MSG
33I'll scatter you all over the world and keep after you with the point of my sword in your backs. There'll be nothing left in your land, nothing going on in your cities.
NABRE
33And you I will scatter among the nations at the point of my drawn sword, leaving your countryside desolate and your cities deserted.
MSG
34With you gone and dispersed in the countries of your enemies, the land, empty of you, will finally get a break and enjoy its Sabbath years.
NABRE
34Then shall the land, during the time it lies waste, make up its lost sabbaths, while you are in the land of your enemies; then shall the land have rest and make up for its sabbaths
MSG
35All the time it's left there empty, the land will get rest, the Sabbaths it never got when you lived there.
NABRE
35during all the time that it lies desolate, enjoying the rest that you would not let it have on your sabbaths when you lived there.
MSG
36"As for those among you still alive, I'll give them over to fearful timidity—even the rustle of a leaf will throw them into a panic. They'll run here and there, back and forth, as if running for their lives even though no one is after them,
NABRE
36Those of you who survive in the lands of their enemies, I will make so fainthearted that the sound of a driven leaf will pursue them, and they shall run as if from the sword, and fall though no one pursues them;
MSG
37tripping and falling over one another in total confusion. You won't stand a chance against an enemy.
NABRE
37stumbling over one another as if to escape a sword, while no one is after them—so helpless will you be to take a stand against your foes!
MSG
38You'll perish among the nations; the land of your enemies will eat you up.
NABRE
38You shall perish among the nations, swallowed up in your enemies' country.
MSG
39Any who are left will slowly rot away in the enemy lands. Rot. And all because of their sins, their sins compounded by their ancestors' sins.
NABRE
39Those of you who survive will waste away in the lands of their enemies, for their own and their ancestors' guilt.
MSG
40"On the other hand, if they confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors, their treacherous betrayal, the defiance
NABRE
40They will confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their ancestors in their treachery against me and in their continued hostility toward me,
MSG
41that set off my defiance that sent them off into enemy lands; if by some chance they soften their hard hearts and make amends for their sin,
NABRE
41so that I, too, had to be hostile to them and bring them into their enemies' land. Then, when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they make amends for their iniquity,
MSG
42I'll remember my covenant with Jacob, I'll remember my covenant with Isaac, and, yes, I'll remember my covenant with Abraham. And I'll remember the land.
NABRE
42I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac; and also my covenant with Abraham I will remember. The land, too, I will remember.
MSG
43"The land will be empty of them and enjoy its Sabbaths while they're gone. They'll pay for their sins because they refused my laws and treated my decrees with contempt.
NABRE
43The land will be forsaken by them, that in its desolation without them, it may make up its sabbaths, and that they, too, may make good the debt of their guilt for having spurned my decrees and loathed my statutes.
MSG
44But in spite of their behavior, while they are among their enemies I won't reject or abhor or destroy them completely. I won't break my covenant with them: I am God, their God.
NABRE
44Yet even so, even while they are in their enemies' land, I will not reject or loathe them to the point of wiping them out, thus making void my covenant with them; for I, the Lord, am their God.
MSG
45For their sake I will remember the covenant with their ancestors whom I, with all the nations watching, brought out of Egypt in order to be their God. I am God."
NABRE
45I will remember for them the covenant I made with their forebears, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt before the eyes of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the Lord.
MSG

NABRE
46These are the statutes, decrees and laws which the Lord established between himself and the Israelites through Moses on Mount Sinai.
