1Later the Master selected seventy and sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he intended to go.
AMP
1Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them out ahead of Him, two by two, into every city and place where He was about to go.
MSG
2He gave them this charge: "What a huge harvest! And how few the harvest hands. So on your knees; ask the God of the Harvest to send harvest hands.
AMP
2He was saying to them, "The harvest is abundant , but the workers are few. Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.
MSG
3"On your way! But be careful—this is hazardous work. You're like lambs in a wolf pack.
AMP
3Go your way; listen carefully: I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.
MSG
4"Travel light. Comb and toothbrush and no extra luggage. "Don't loiter and make small talk with everyone you meet along the way.
AMP
4Do not carry a money belt, a provision bag, or sandals; and do not greet anyone along the way .
MSG
5"When you enter a home, greet the family, 'Peace.'
AMP
5Whatever house you enter, first say, ' Peace to this house.'
MSG
6If your greeting is received, then it's a good place to stay. But if it's not received, take it back and get out. Don't impose yourself.
AMP
6And if anyone of peace is there , your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.
MSG
7"Stay at one home, taking your meals there, for a worker deserves three square meals. Don't move from house to house, looking for the best cook in town.
AMP
7Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not move from house to house.
MSG
8"When you enter a town and are received, eat what they set before you,
AMP
8Whenever you go into a city and they welcome you, eat what is set before you;
MSG
9heal anyone who is sick, and tell them, 'God's kingdom is right on your doorstep!'
AMP
9and heal those in it who are sick , and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'
MSG
10"When you enter a town and are not received, go out in the street and say,
AMP
10But whatever city you enter and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say,
MSG
11'The only thing we got from you is the dirt on our feet, and we're giving it back. Did you have any idea that God's kingdom was right on your doorstep?'
AMP
11'Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you ; yet understand this, that the kingdom of God has come near .'
MSG
12Sodom will have it better on Judgment Day than the town that rejects you.
AMP
12I tell you, it will be more bearable in that day for Sodom than for that city.
MSG
13"Doom, Chorazin! Doom, Bethsaida! If Tyre and Sidon had been given half the chances given you, they'd have been on their knees long ago, repenting and crying for mercy.
AMP
13"Woe (judgment is coming) to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented and changed their minds long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes .
MSG
14Tyre and Sidon will have it easy on Judgment Day compared to you.
AMP
14However, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you.
MSG
15"And you, Capernaum! Do you think you're about to be promoted to heaven? Think again. You're on a mud slide to hell.
AMP
15And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades (the realm of the dead).
MSG
16"The one who listens to you, listens to me. The one who rejects you, rejects me. And rejecting me is the same as rejecting God, who sent me."
AMP
16"The one who listens to you listens to Me; and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and the one who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me."
MSG
17The seventy came back triumphant. "Master, even the demons danced to your tune!"
AMP
17The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name."
MSG
18Jesus said, "I know. I saw Satan fall, a bolt of lightning out of the sky.
AMP
18He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning.
MSG
19See what I've given you? Safe passage as you walk on snakes and scorpions, and protection from every assault of the Enemy. No one can put a hand on you.
AMP
19Listen carefully: I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy (Satan); and nothing will harm you.
MSG
20All the same, the great triumph is not in your authority over evil, but in God's authority over you and presence with you. Not what you do for God but what God does for you—that's the agenda for rejoicing."
AMP
20Nevertheless do not rejoice at this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven."
MSG
21At that, Jesus rejoiced, exuberant in the Holy Spirit. "I thank you, Father, Master of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the know-it-alls and showed them to these innocent newcomers. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.
AMP
21In that very hour He was overjoyed and rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and He said, "I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to infants . Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.
MSG
22"I've been given it all by my Father! Only the Father knows who the Son is and only the Son knows who the Father is. The Son can introduce the Father to anyone he wants to."
AMP
22All things have been transferred and turned over to Me by My Father and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him."
MSG
23He then turned in a private aside to his disciples. "Fortunate the eyes that see what you're seeing!
AMP
23Then turning to His disciples, Jesus said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see what you see,
MSG
24There are plenty of prophets and kings who would have given their right arm to see what you are seeing but never got so much as a glimpse, to hear what you are hearing but never got so much as a whisper."
AMP
24for I say to you that many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, and they did not see it; and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it."
MSG
25Just then a religion scholar stood up with a question to test Jesus. "Teacher, what do I need to do to get eternal life?"
AMP
25And a certain lawyer stood up to test Him, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
MSG
26He answered, "What's written in God's Law? How do you interpret it?"
AMP
26Jesus said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?"
MSG
27He said, "That you love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and muscle and intelligence—and that you love your neighbor as well as you do yourself."
AMP
27And he replied, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."
MSG
28"Good answer!" said Jesus. "Do it and you'll live."
AMP
28Jesus said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this habitually and you will live."
MSG
29Looking for a loophole, he asked, "And just how would you define 'neighbor'?"
AMP
29But he, wishing to justify and vindicate himself, asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
MSG
30Jesus answered by telling a story. "There was once a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. On the way he was attacked by robbers. They took his clothes, beat him up, and went off leaving him half-dead.
AMP
30Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he encountered robbers, who stripped him of his clothes , beat him, and went their way , leaving him half dead.
MSG
31Luckily, a priest was on his way down the same road, but when he saw him he angled across to the other side.
AMP
31Now by coincidence a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
MSG
32Then a Levite religious man showed up; he also avoided the injured man.
AMP
32Likewise a Levite also came down to the place and saw him, and passed by on the other side .
MSG
33"A Samaritan traveling the road came on him. When he saw the man's condition, his heart went out to him.
AMP
33But a Samaritan (foreigner), who was traveling, came upon him; and when he saw him, he was deeply moved with compassion ,
MSG
34He gave him first aid, disinfecting and bandaging his wounds. Then he lifted him onto his donkey, led him to an inn, and made him comfortable.
AMP
34and went to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them ; and he put him on his own pack-animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
MSG
35In the morning he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take good care of him. If it costs any more, put it on my bill—I'll pay you on my way back.'
AMP
35On the next day he took out two denarii (two days' wages) and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.'
MSG
36"What do you think? Which of the three became a neighbor to the man attacked by robbers?"
AMP
36Which of these three do you think proved himself a neighbor to the man who encountered the robbers?"
MSG
37"The one who treated him kindly," the religion scholar responded. Jesus said, "Go and do the same."
AMP
37He answered, "The one who showed compassion and mercy to him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and constantly do the same."
MSG
38As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home.
AMP
38Now while they were on their way, Jesus entered a village , and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.
MSG
39She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said.
AMP
39She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord's feet and was continually listening to His teaching.
MSG
40But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. "Master, don't you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand."
AMP
40But Martha was very busy and distracted with all of her serving responsibilities; and she approached Him and said, "Lord, is it of no concern to You that my sister has left me to do the serving alone? Tell her to help me and do her part."
MSG
41The Master said, "Martha, dear Martha, you're fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing.
AMP
41But the Lord replied to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered and anxious about so many things;
MSG
42One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it's the main course, and won't be taken from her."
AMP
42but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part , which will not be taken away from her."
