ASV
2And he saw a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.
MSG
3He said, "The plain truth is that this widow has given by far the largest offering today.
ASV
3And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, 3754 This poor widow cast in more than they all:
MSG
4All these others made offerings that they'll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn't afford—she gave her all!"
ASV
4for all these did of their superfluity cast in unto the gifts; 2316 but she of her want did cast in all the living that she had.
MSG
5One day people were standing around talking about the Temple, remarking how beautiful it was, the splendor of its stonework and memorial gifts. Jesus said,
ASV
5And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and offerings, he said,
MSG
6"All this you're admiring so much—the time is coming when every stone in that building will end up in a heap of rubble."
ASV
6As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in which there shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
MSG
7They asked him, "Teacher, when is this going to happen? What clue will we get that it's about to take place?"
ASV
7And they asked him, saying, Teacher, when therefore shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when these things are about to come to pass?
MSG
8He said, "Watch out for the doomsday deceivers. Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities claiming, 'I'm the One,' or, 'The end is near.' Don't fall for any of that.
ASV
8And he said, Take heed that ye be not led astray: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am he; and, The time is at hand: 3767 go ye not after them.
MSG
9When you hear of wars and uprisings, keep your head and don't panic. This is routine history and no sign of the end."
ASV
9And when ye shall hear of wars and tumults, be not terrified: for these things must needs come to pass first; but the end is not immediately.
MSG
10He went on, "Nation will fight nation and ruler fight ruler, over and over.
ASV
10Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom;
MSG
11Huge earthquakes will occur in various places. There will be famines. You'll think at times that the very sky is falling.
ASV
11and there shall be great earthquakes, and in divers places famines and pestilences; and there shall be terrors and great signs from heaven.
MSG
12"But before any of this happens, they'll arrest you, hunt you down, and drag you to court and jail. It will go from bad to worse, dog-eat-dog, everyone at your throat because you carry my name.
ASV
12But before all these things, they shall lay their hands on you, and shall persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name's sake.
MSG
13You'll end up on the witness stand, called to testify.
ASV
13It shall turn out unto you for a testimony.
MSG
14Make up your mind right now not to worry about it.
ASV
14Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate beforehand how to answer:
MSG
15I'll give you the words and wisdom that will reduce all your accusers to stammers and stutters.
ASV
15for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to withstand or to gainsay.
MSG
16"You'll even be turned in by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. Some of you will be killed.
ASV
16But ye shall be delivered up even by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolk, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.
MSG
17There's no telling who will hate you because of me.
ASV
17And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.
MSG
18Even so, every detail of your body and soul—even the hairs of your head!—is in my care; nothing of you will be lost.
ASV
18And not a hair of your head shall perish.
MSG
19Staying with it—that's what is required. Stay with it to the end. You won't be sorry; you'll be saved.
ASV
19In your patience ye shall win your souls.
MSG
20"When you see soldiers camped all around Jerusalem, then you'll know that she is about to be devastated.
ASV
20But when ye see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that her desolation is at hand.
MSG
21If you're living in Judea at the time, run for the hills. If you're in the city, get out quickly. If you're out in the fields, don't go home to get your coat.
ASV
21Then let them that are in Judaea flee unto the mountains; and let them that are in the midst of her depart out; and let not them that are in the country enter, 1519 therein.
MSG
22This is Vengeance Day—everything written about it will come to a head.
ASV
22For these are days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
MSG
23Pregnant and nursing mothers will have it especially hard. Incredible misery! Torrential rage!
ASV
231161 Woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days! for there shall be great distress upon the land, and wrath unto this people.
MSG
24People dropping like flies; people dragged off to prisons; Jerusalem under the boot of barbarians until the nations finish what was given them to do.
ASV
24And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led captive into all the nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
MSG
25"It will seem like all hell has broken loose—sun, moon, stars, earth, sea,
ASV
25And there shall be signs in sun and moon and stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, in perplexity for the roaring of the sea and the billows;
MSG
26in an uproar and everyone all over the world in a panic, the wind knocked out of them by the threat of doom, the powers-that-be quaking.
ASV
26men fainting for fear, and for expectation of the things which are coming on the world: for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.
MSG
27"And then—then!—they'll see the Son of Man welcomed in grand style—a glorious welcome!
ASV
27And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
MSG
28When all this starts to happen, up on your feet. Stand tall with your heads high. Help is on the way!"
ASV
28But when these things begin to come to pass, look up, and lift up your heads; because your redemption draweth nigh.
MSG
29He told them a story. "Look at a fig tree. Any tree for that matter.
ASV
29And he spake to them a parable: Behold the fig tree, and all the trees:
MSG
30When the leaves begin to show, one look tells you that summer is right around the corner.
ASV
30when they now shoot forth, ye see it and know of your own selves that the summer is now nigh.
MSG
31The same here—when you see these things happen, you know God's kingdom is about here.
ASV
31Even so ye also, when ye see these things coming to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh.
MSG
32Don't brush this off: I'm not just saying this for some future generation, but for this one, too—these things will happen.
ASV
32Verily I say unto you, 3754 This generation shall not pass away, 302 till all things be accomplished.
MSG
33Sky and earth will wear out; my words won't wear out.
ASV
33Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
MSG
34"But be on your guard. Don't let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping. Otherwise, that Day is going to take you by complete surprise, spring on you suddenly like a trap,
ASV
34But take heed to yourselves, lest haply your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day come on you suddenly as a snare:
MSG
35for it's going to come on everyone, everywhere, at once.
ASV
35for so, Obadiah shall it come upon all them that dwell on the face of all the earth.
MSG
36So, whatever you do, don't go to sleep at the switch. Pray constantly that you will have the strength and wits to make it through everything that's coming and end up on your feet before the Son of Man."
ASV
36But watch ye at every season, making supplication, that ye may prevail to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
MSG

ASV

ASV
38And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, to hear him.
