Mt 17MateusMt 19
MSG
1At about the same time, the disciples came to Jesus asking, "Who gets the highest rank in God's kingdom?"
AMP
1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
MSG
2For an answer Jesus called over a child, whom he stood in the middle of the room,
AMP
2He called a little child and set him before them,
MSG
3and said, "I'm telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you're not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in.
AMP
3and said, "I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless you repent and become like children , you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
MSG
4Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God's kingdom.
AMP
4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
MSG
5What's more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it's the same as receiving me.
AMP
5Whoever receives and welcomes one child like this in My name receives Me;
MSG
6"But if you give them a hard time, bullying or taking advantage of their simple trust, you'll soon wish you hadn't. You'd be better off dropped in the middle of the lake with a millstone around your neck.
AMP
6but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble and sin , it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
MSG
7Doom to the world for giving these God-believing children a hard time! Hard times are inevitable, but you don't have to make it worse—and it's doomsday to you if you do.
AMP
7"Woe (judgment is coming) to the world because of stumbling blocks and temptations to sin! It is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to the person on whose account or through whom the stumbling block comes!
MSG
8"If your hand or your foot gets in the way of God, chop it off and throw it away. You're better off maimed or lame and alive than the proud owners of two hands and two feet, godless in a furnace of eternal fire.
AMP
8"If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble and sin, cut it off and throw it away from you ; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into everlasting fire.
MSG
9And if your eye distracts you from God, pull it out and throw it away. You're better off one-eyed and alive than exercising your twenty-twenty vision from inside the fire of hell.
AMP
9If your eye causes you to stumble and sin, pluck it out and throw it away from you ; it is better for you to enter life with only one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fiery hell.
MSG
10"Watch that you don't treat a single one of these childlike believers arrogantly. You realize, don't you, that their personal angels are constantly in touch with my Father in heaven?
AMP
10"See that you do not despise or think less of one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually look upon the face of My Father who is in heaven.
MSG
12"Look at it this way. If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, doesn't he leave the ninety-nine and go after the one?
AMP
12"What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them gets lost, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountain and go in search of the one that is lost?
MSG
13And if he finds it, doesn't he make far more over it than over the ninety-nine who stay put?
AMP
13And if it turns out that he finds it, I assure you and most solemnly say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that did not get lost.
MSG
14Your Father in heaven feels the same way. He doesn't want to lose even one of these simple believers.
AMP
14So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones be lost.
MSG
15"If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him—work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend.
AMP
15"If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens and pays attention to you, you have won back your brother.
MSG
16If he won't listen, take one or two others along so that the presence of witnesses will keep things honest, and try again.
AMP
16But if he does not listen, take along with you one or two others, so that every word may be confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
MSG
17If he still won't listen, tell the church. If he won't listen to the church, you'll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer again God's forgiving love.
AMP
17If he pays no attention to them , tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile (unbeliever) and a tax collector.
MSG
18"Take this most seriously: A yes on earth is yes in heaven; a no on earth is no in heaven. What you say to one another is eternal. I mean this.
AMP
18I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.
MSG
19When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action.
AMP
19"Again I say to you, that if two believers on earth agree about anything that they ask , it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.
MSG
20And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I'll be there."
AMP
20For where two or three are gathered in My name , I am there among them."
MSG
21At that point Peter got up the nerve to ask, "Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven?"
AMP
21Then Peter came to Him and asked, "Lord, how many times will my brother sin against me and I forgive him and let it go? Up to seven times?"
MSG
22Jesus replied, "Seven! Hardly. Try seventy times seven.
AMP
22Jesus answered him, "I say to you, not up to seven times, but seventy times seven.
MSG
23"The kingdom of God is like a king who decided to square accounts with his servants.
AMP
23"Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.
MSG
24As he got under way, one servant was brought before him who had run up a debt of a hundred thousand dollars.
AMP
24When he began the accounting, one who owed him 10,000 talents was brought to him.
MSG
25He couldn't pay up, so the king ordered the man, along with his wife, children, and goods, to be auctioned off at the slave market.
AMP
25"But because he could not repay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and his children and everything that he possessed, and payment to be made.
MSG
26"The poor wretch threw himself at the king's feet and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
AMP
26So the slave fell on his knees and begged him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.'
MSG
27Touched by his plea, the king let him off, erasing the debt.
AMP
27And his master's heart was moved with compassion and he released him and forgave him the debt.
MSG
28"The servant was no sooner out of the room when he came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him ten dollars. He seized him by the throat and demanded, 'Pay up. Now!'
AMP
28But that same slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began choking him, saying, 'Pay what you owe!'
MSG
29"The poor wretch threw himself down and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
AMP
29So his fellow slave fell on his knees and begged him earnestly, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you.'
MSG
30But he wouldn't do it. He had him arrested and put in jail until the debt was paid.
AMP
30But he was unwilling and he went and had him thrown in prison until he paid back the debt.
MSG
31When the other servants saw this going on, they were outraged and brought a detailed report to the king.
AMP
31When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and they went and reported to their master everything that had taken place.
MSG
32"The king summoned the man and said, 'You evil servant! I forgave your entire debt when you begged me for mercy.
AMP
32Then his master called him and said to him, 'You wicked and contemptible slave, I forgave all that debt of yours because you begged me.
MSG
33Shouldn't you be compelled to be merciful to your fellow servant who asked for mercy?'
AMP
33Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave , as I had mercy on you?'
MSG
34The king was furious and put the screws to the man until he paid back his entire debt.
AMP
34And in wrath his master turned him over to the torturers (jailers) until he paid all that he owed.
MSG
35And that's exactly what my Father in heaven is going to do to each one of you who doesn't forgive unconditionally anyone who asks for mercy."
AMP
35My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart."
