1At about the same time, the disciples came to Jesus asking, "Who gets the highest rank in God's kingdom?"
ASV
1In that hour came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
MSG
2For an answer Jesus called over a child, whom he stood in the middle of the room,
ASV
2And he called to him a little child, and set him in the middle of them,
MSG
3and said, "I'm telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you're not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in.
ASV
3and said, Truly I say unto you, Except you turn, and become as little sons, you shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.
MSG
4Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God's kingdom.
ASV
4Whoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
MSG
5What's more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it's the same as receiving me.
ASV
5And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receives me:

6"But if you give them a hard time, bullying or taking advantage of their simple trust, you'll soon wish you hadn't. You'd be better off dropped in the middle of the lake with a millstone around your neck.
ASV
6But whoso shall cause one of these little ones that believe on me to stumble, it is profitable for him that a great millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depth of the sea.
MSG
7Doom to the world for giving these God-believing children a hard time! Hard times are inevitable, but you don't have to make it worse—and it's doomsday to you if you do.

7Woe unto the world because of occasions of stumbling! for it must needs be that the occasions come; but woe to that man through whom the occasion comes!
MSG
8"If your hand or your foot gets in the way of God, chop it off and throw it away. You're better off maimed or lame and alive than the proud owners of two hands and two feet, godless in a furnace of eternal fire.
ASV
8And if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from you: it is good for you to enter into life crippled or halt, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire.
MSG
9And if your eye distracts you from God, pull it out and throw it away. You're better off one-eyed and alive than exercising your twenty-twenty vision from inside the fire of hell.

9And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from you: it is good for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire.

10"Watch that you don't treat a single one of these childlike believers arrogantly. You realize, don't you, that their personal angels are constantly in touch with my Father in heaven?
ASV
10See that you despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.
MSG
12"Look at it this way. If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, doesn't he leave the ninety-nine and go after the one?
ASV
12How think you? if any man have a hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, does he not leave the ninety and nine, and go unto the mountains, and seek that which goes astray?
MSG
13And if he finds it, doesn't he make far more over it than over the ninety-nine who stay put?
ASV
13And if so be that he find it, truly I say unto you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety and nine which have not gone astray.
MSG
14Your Father in heaven feels the same way. He doesn't want to lose even one of these simple believers.
ASV
14Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
MSG
15"If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him—work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend.
ASV
15And if your brother sin against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone: if he hear you, you have gained your brother.
MSG
16If he won't listen, take one or two others along so that the presence of witnesses will keep things honest, and try again.
ASV
16But if he hear you not, take with you one or two more, that at the mouth of two witnesses or three every word may be established.
MSG
17If he still won't listen, tell the church. If he won't listen to the church, you'll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer again God's forgiving love.
ASV
17And if he refuse to hear them, tell it unto the church: and if he refuse to hear the church also, let him be unto you as the Gentile and the tax collector.

18"Take this most seriously: A yes on earth is yes in heaven; a no on earth is no in heaven. What you say to one another is eternal. I mean this.
ASV
18Truly I say unto you, what things soever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and what things soever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
MSG
19When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action.
ASV
19Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father who is in heaven.
MSG
20And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I'll be there."
ASV
20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the middle of them.
MSG
21At that point Peter got up the nerve to ask, "Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven?"
ASV
21Then came Peter and said to him, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? until seven times?
MSG
22Jesus replied, "Seven! Hardly. Try seventy times seven.
ASV
22Jesus says unto him, I say not unto you, Until seven times; but, Until seventy times seven.
MSG
23"The kingdom of God is like a king who decided to square accounts with his servants.
ASV
23Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, who would make a reckoning with his servants.
MSG
24As he got under way, one servant was brought before him who had run up a debt of a hundred thousand dollars.
ASV
24And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, that owed him ten thousand talents.
MSG
25He couldn't pay up, so the king ordered the man, along with his wife, children, and goods, to be auctioned off at the slave market.
ASV
25But forasmuch as he had not with which to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and sons, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
MSG
26"The poor wretch threw himself at the king's feet and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
ASV
26The servant therefore fell down and worshiped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.
MSG
27Touched by his plea, the king let him off, erasing the debt.
ASV
27And the lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.
MSG
28"The servant was no sooner out of the room when he came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him ten dollars. He seized him by the throat and demanded, 'Pay up. Now!'
ASV
28But that servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, who owed him a hundred shillings: and he laid hold on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay what you owe.
MSG
29"The poor wretch threw himself down and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
ASV
29So his fellow-servant fell down and begged him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you.
MSG
30But he wouldn't do it. He had him arrested and put in jail until the debt was paid.
ASV
30And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, until he should pay that which was due.
MSG
31When the other servants saw this going on, they were outraged and brought a detailed report to the king.
ASV
31So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were exceedingly sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
MSG
32"The king summoned the man and said, 'You evil servant! I forgave your entire debt when you begged me for mercy.
ASV
32Then his lord called him unto him, and says to him, You wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt, because you besoughtest me:
MSG
33Shouldn't you be compelled to be merciful to your fellow servant who asked for mercy?'
ASV
33should not you also have had mercy on your fellow-servant, even as I had mercy on you?
MSG
34The king was furious and put the screws to the man until he paid back his entire debt.
ASV
34And his lord was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all that was due.
MSG
35And that's exactly what my Father in heaven is going to do to each one of you who doesn't forgive unconditionally anyone who asks for mercy."
ASV
35So shall also my heavenly Father do unto you, if you forgive not every one his brother from your hearts.
