1At about the same time, the disciples came to Jesus asking, "Who gets the highest rank in God's kingdom?"

1At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

2For an answer Jesus called over a child, whom he stood in the middle of the room,
ESV
2And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them
MSG
3and said, "I'm telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you're not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in.

3and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

4Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God's kingdom.
ESV
4Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
MSG
5What's more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it's the same as receiving me.

5“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me,

6"But if you give them a hard time, bullying or taking advantage of their simple trust, you'll soon wish you hadn't. You'd be better off dropped in the middle of the lake with a millstone around your neck.

6but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

7Doom to the world for giving these God-believing children a hard time! Hard times are inevitable, but you don't have to make it worse—and it's doomsday to you if you do.

7“Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!

8"If your hand or your foot gets in the way of God, chop it off and throw it away. You're better off maimed or lame and alive than the proud owners of two hands and two feet, godless in a furnace of eternal fire.

8And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.

9And if your eye distracts you from God, pull it out and throw it away. You're better off one-eyed and alive than exercising your twenty-twenty vision from inside the fire of hell.

9And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.

10"Watch that you don't treat a single one of these childlike believers arrogantly. You realize, don't you, that their personal angels are constantly in touch with my Father in heaven?

10“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.

12"Look at it this way. If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, doesn't he leave the ninety-nine and go after the one?
ESV
12What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?
MSG
13And if he finds it, doesn't he make far more over it than over the ninety-nine who stay put?
ESV
13And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.

14Your Father in heaven feels the same way. He doesn't want to lose even one of these simple believers.
ESV
14So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
MSG
15"If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him—work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend.
ESV
15“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.
MSG
16If he won't listen, take one or two others along so that the presence of witnesses will keep things honest, and try again.
ESV
16But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.
MSG
17If he still won't listen, tell the church. If he won't listen to the church, you'll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer again God's forgiving love.
ESV
17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

18"Take this most seriously: A yes on earth is yes in heaven; a no on earth is no in heaven. What you say to one another is eternal. I mean this.

18Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

19When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action.
ESV
19Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.
MSG
20And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I'll be there."
ESV
20For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

21At that point Peter got up the nerve to ask, "Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven?"
ESV
21Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?”

22Jesus replied, "Seven! Hardly. Try seventy times seven.
ESV
22Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.
MSG
23"The kingdom of God is like a king who decided to square accounts with his servants.
ESV
23“Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.
MSG
24As he got under way, one servant was brought before him who had run up a debt of a hundred thousand dollars.
ESV
24When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
MSG
25He couldn't pay up, so the king ordered the man, along with his wife, children, and goods, to be auctioned off at the slave market.
ESV
25And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.
MSG
26"The poor wretch threw himself at the king's feet and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
ESV
26So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’
MSG
27Touched by his plea, the king let him off, erasing the debt.
ESV
27And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.
MSG
28"The servant was no sooner out of the room when he came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him ten dollars. He seized him by the throat and demanded, 'Pay up. Now!'
ESV
28But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’

29"The poor wretch threw himself down and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
ESV
29So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’
MSG
30But he wouldn't do it. He had him arrested and put in jail until the debt was paid.
ESV
30He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt.
MSG
31When the other servants saw this going on, they were outraged and brought a detailed report to the king.
ESV
31When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place.
MSG
32"The king summoned the man and said, 'You evil servant! I forgave your entire debt when you begged me for mercy.
ESV
32Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.
MSG
33Shouldn't you be compelled to be merciful to your fellow servant who asked for mercy?'
ESV
33And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’
MSG
34The king was furious and put the screws to the man until he paid back his entire debt.
ESV
34And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt.
MSG
35And that's exactly what my Father in heaven is going to do to each one of you who doesn't forgive unconditionally anyone who asks for mercy."
ESV
35So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
