1At about the same time, the disciples came to Jesus asking, "Who gets the highest rank in God's kingdom?"

1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, 'Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?'

2For an answer Jesus called over a child, whom he stood in the middle of the room,

2And He called a child to Himself and set him before them,

3and said, "I'm telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you're not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in.

3and said, 'Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

4Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God's kingdom.

4'Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5What's more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it's the same as receiving me.

5'And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me;

6"But if you give them a hard time, bullying or taking advantage of their simple trust, you'll soon wish you hadn't. You'd be better off dropped in the middle of the lake with a millstone around your neck.

6but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

7Doom to the world for giving these God-believing children a hard time! Hard times are inevitable, but you don't have to make it worse—and it's doomsday to you if you do.

7'Woe to the world because of stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!

8"If your hand or your foot gets in the way of God, chop it off and throw it away. You're better off maimed or lame and alive than the proud owners of two hands and two feet, godless in a furnace of eternal fire.

8'If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire.

9And if your eye distracts you from God, pull it out and throw it away. You're better off one-eyed and alive than exercising your twenty-twenty vision from inside the fire of hell.

9'If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell.

10"Watch that you don't treat a single one of these childlike believers arrogantly. You realize, don't you, that their personal angels are constantly in touch with my Father in heaven?

10'See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven.

12"Look at it this way. If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, doesn't he leave the ninety-nine and go after the one?

12'What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying?

13And if he finds it, doesn't he make far more over it than over the ninety-nine who stay put?

13'If it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray.

14Your Father in heaven feels the same way. He doesn't want to lose even one of these simple believers.

14'So it is not will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.

15"If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him—work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend.

15'If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.

16If he won't listen, take one or two others along so that the presence of witnesses will keep things honest, and try again.

16'But if he does not listen , take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED.

17If he still won't listen, tell the church. If he won't listen to the church, you'll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer again God's forgiving love.

17'If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

18"Take this most seriously: A yes on earth is yes in heaven; a no on earth is no in heaven. What you say to one another is eternal. I mean this.

18'Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.

19When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action.

19'Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.

20And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I'll be there."

20'For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.'

21At that point Peter got up the nerve to ask, "Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven?"

21Then Peter came and said to Him, 'Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?'
MSG
22Jesus replied, "Seven! Hardly. Try seventy times seven.

22Jesus said to him, 'I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

23"The kingdom of God is like a king who decided to square accounts with his servants.
NASB
23'For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.

24As he got under way, one servant was brought before him who had run up a debt of a hundred thousand dollars.
NASB
24'When he had begun to settle , one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him.
MSG
25He couldn't pay up, so the king ordered the man, along with his wife, children, and goods, to be auctioned off at the slave market.
NASB
25'But since he did not have to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made.
MSG
26"The poor wretch threw himself at the king's feet and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
NASB
26'So the slave fell and prostrated himself before him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.'

27Touched by his plea, the king let him off, erasing the debt.
NASB
27'And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt.

28"The servant was no sooner out of the room when he came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him ten dollars. He seized him by the throat and demanded, 'Pay up. Now!'

28'But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and to choke , saying, 'Pay back what you owe.'

29"The poor wretch threw himself down and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.'
NASB
29'So his fellow slave fell and to plead with him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you.'

30But he wouldn't do it. He had him arrested and put in jail until the debt was paid.
NASB
30'But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed.
MSG
31When the other servants saw this going on, they were outraged and brought a detailed report to the king.
NASB
31'So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened.

32"The king summoned the man and said, 'You evil servant! I forgave your entire debt when you begged me for mercy.
NASB
32'Then summoning him, his lord said to him, 'You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.
MSG
33Shouldn't you be compelled to be merciful to your fellow servant who asked for mercy?'
NASB
33'Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?'
MSG
34The king was furious and put the screws to the man until he paid back his entire debt.
NASB
34'And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him.
MSG
35And that's exactly what my Father in heaven is going to do to each one of you who doesn't forgive unconditionally anyone who asks for mercy."

35'My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.'
