Mt 22MateusMt 24
MSG
1Now Jesus turned to address his disciples, along with the crowd that had gathered with them.
ESV
1Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,
MSG
2"The religion scholars and Pharisees are competent teachers in God's Law.
ESV
2“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat,
MSG
3You won't go wrong in following their teachings on Moses. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don't live it. They don't take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It's all spit-and-polish veneer.
ESV
3so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.
MSG
4"Instead of giving you God's Law as food and drink by which you can banquet on God, they package it in bundles of rules, loading you down like pack animals. They seem to take pleasure in watching you stagger under these loads, and wouldn't think of lifting a finger to help.
ESV
4They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.
MSG
5Their lives are perpetual fashion shows, embroidered prayer shawls one day and flowery prayers the next.
ESV
5They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,
MSG
6They love to sit at the head table at church dinners, basking in the most prominent positions,
ESV
6and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues
MSG
7preening in the radiance of public flattery, receiving honorary degrees, and getting called 'Doctor' and 'Reverend.'
ESV
7and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.
MSG
8"Don't let people do that to you, put you on a pedestal like that. You all have a single Teacher, and you are all classmates.
ESV
8But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.
MSG
9Don't set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do. No one else should carry the title of 'Father'; you have only one Father, and he's in heaven.
ESV
9And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
MSG
10And don't let people maneuver you into taking charge of them. There is only one Life-Leader for you and them—Christ.
ESV
10Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.
MSG
11"Do you want to stand out? Then step down. Be a servant.
ESV
11The greatest among you shall be your servant.
MSG
12If you puff yourself up, you'll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you're content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty.
ESV
12Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
MSG
13"I've had it with you! You're hopeless, you religion scholars, you Pharisees! Frauds! Your lives are roadblocks to God's kingdom. You refuse to enter, and won't let anyone else in either.
ESV
13“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.
MSG
15"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You go halfway around the world to make a convert, but once you get him you make him into a replica of yourselves, double-damned.
ESV
15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.
MSG
16"You're hopeless! What arrogant stupidity! You say, 'If someone makes a promise with his fingers crossed, that's nothing; but if he swears with his hand on the Bible, that's serious.'
ESV
16“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’
MSG
17What ignorance! Does the leather on the Bible carry more weight than the skin on your hands?
ESV
17You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?
MSG
18And what about this piece of trivia: 'If you shake hands on a promise, that's nothing; but if you raise your hand that God is your witness, that's serious'?
ESV
18And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’
MSG
19What ridiculous hairsplitting! What difference does it make whether you shake hands or raise hands?
ESV
19You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
MSG
20A promise is a promise. What difference does it make if you make your promise inside or outside a house of worship? A promise is a promise. God is present, watching and holding you to account regardless.
ESV
20So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
MSG
ESV
21And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it.
MSG
ESV
22And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.
MSG
23"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You keep meticulous account books, tithing on every nickel and dime you get, but on the meat of God's Law, things like fairness and compassion and commitment—the absolute basics!—you carelessly take it or leave it. Careful bookkeeping is commendable, but the basics are required.
ESV
23“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
MSG
24Do you have any idea how silly you look, writing a life story that's wrong from start to finish, nitpicking over commas and semicolons?
ESV
24You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!
MSG
25"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You burnish the surface of your cups and bowls so they sparkle in the sun, while the insides are maggoty with your greed and gluttony.
ESV
25“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
MSG
26Stupid Pharisee! Scour the insides, and then the gleaming surface will mean something.
ESV
26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.
MSG
27"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You're like manicured grave plots, grass clipped and the flowers bright, but six feet down it's all rotting bones and worm-eaten flesh.
ESV
27“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness.
MSG
28People look at you and think you're saints, but beneath the skin you're total frauds.
ESV
28So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
MSG
29"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You build granite tombs for your prophets and marble monuments for your saints.
ESV
29“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,
MSG
30And you say that if you had lived in the days of your ancestors, no blood would have been on your hands.
ESV
30saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’
MSG
31You protest too much! You're cut from the same cloth as those murderers,
ESV
31Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.
MSG
32and daily add to the death count.
ESV
32Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.
MSG
33"Snakes! Reptilian sneaks! Do you think you can worm your way out of this? Never have to pay the piper?
ESV
33You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?
MSG
34It's on account of people like you that I send prophets and wise guides and scholars generation after generation—and generation after generation you treat them like dirt, greeting them with lynch mobs, hounding them with abuse.
ESV
34Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,
MSG
35"You can't squirm out of this: Every drop of righteous blood ever spilled on this earth, beginning with the blood of that good man Abel right down to the blood of Zechariah, Barachiah's son, whom you murdered at his prayers, is on your head.
ESV
35so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
MSG
36All this, I'm telling you, is coming down on you, on your generation.
ESV
36Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
MSG
37"Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Murderer of prophets! Killer of the ones who brought you God's news! How often I've ached to embrace your children, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you wouldn't let me.
ESV
37“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
MSG
38And now you're so desolate, nothing but a ghost town.
ESV
38See, your house is left to you desolate.
MSG
39What is there left to say? Only this: I'm out of here soon. The next time you see me you'll say, 'Oh, God has blessed him! He's come, bringing God's rule!' "
ESV
39For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
