NABRE
MSG
1Now Jesus turned to address his disciples, along with the crowd that had gathered with them.
NABRE
1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples,
MSG
2"The religion scholars and Pharisees are competent teachers in God's Law.
NABRE
2saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses.
MSG
3You won't go wrong in following their teachings on Moses. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don't live it. They don't take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It's all spit-and-polish veneer.
NABRE
3Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.
MSG
4"Instead of giving you God's Law as food and drink by which you can banquet on God, they package it in bundles of rules, loading you down like pack animals. They seem to take pleasure in watching you stagger under these loads, and wouldn't think of lifting a finger to help.
NABRE
4They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them.
MSG
5Their lives are perpetual fashion shows, embroidered prayer shawls one day and flowery prayers the next.
NABRE
5All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.
MSG
6They love to sit at the head table at church dinners, basking in the most prominent positions,
NABRE
6They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,
MSG
7preening in the radiance of public flattery, receiving honorary degrees, and getting called 'Doctor' and 'Reverend.'
NABRE
7greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi.'
MSG
8"Don't let people do that to you, put you on a pedestal like that. You all have a single Teacher, and you are all classmates.
NABRE
8As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers.
MSG
9Don't set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do. No one else should carry the title of 'Father'; you have only one Father, and he's in heaven.
NABRE
9Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven.
MSG
10And don't let people maneuver you into taking charge of them. There is only one Life-Leader for you and them—Christ.
NABRE
10Do not be called 'Master'; you have but one master, the Messiah.
MSG
11"Do you want to stand out? Then step down. Be a servant.
NABRE
11The greatest among you must be your servant.
MSG
12If you puff yourself up, you'll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you're content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty.
NABRE
12Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
MSG
13"I've had it with you! You're hopeless, you religion scholars, you Pharisees! Frauds! Your lives are roadblocks to God's kingdom. You refuse to enter, and won't let anyone else in either.
NABRE
13"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.
MSG
15"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You go halfway around the world to make a convert, but once you get him you make him into a replica of yourselves, double-damned.
NABRE
15"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You traverse sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a child of Gehenna twice as much as yourselves.
MSG
16"You're hopeless! What arrogant stupidity! You say, 'If someone makes a promise with his fingers crossed, that's nothing; but if he swears with his hand on the Bible, that's serious.'
NABRE
16"Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If one swears by the temple, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated.'
MSG
17What ignorance! Does the leather on the Bible carry more weight than the skin on your hands?
NABRE
17Blind fools, which is greater, the gold, or the temple that made the gold sacred?
MSG
18And what about this piece of trivia: 'If you shake hands on a promise, that's nothing; but if you raise your hand that God is your witness, that's serious'?
NABRE
18And you say, 'If one swears by the altar, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gift on the altar, one is obligated.'
MSG
19What ridiculous hairsplitting! What difference does it make whether you shake hands or raise hands?
NABRE
19You blind ones, which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
MSG
20A promise is a promise. What difference does it make if you make your promise inside or outside a house of worship? A promise is a promise. God is present, watching and holding you to account regardless.
NABRE
20One who swears by the altar swears by it and all that is upon it;
MSG—
NABRE
21one who swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it;
MSG—
NABRE
22one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it.
MSG
23"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You keep meticulous account books, tithing on every nickel and dime you get, but on the meat of God's Law, things like fairness and compassion and commitment—the absolute basics!—you carelessly take it or leave it. Careful bookkeeping is commendable, but the basics are required.
NABRE
23"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and fidelity. these you should have done, without neglecting the others.
MSG
24Do you have any idea how silly you look, writing a life story that's wrong from start to finish, nitpicking over commas and semicolons?
NABRE
24Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel!
MSG
25"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You burnish the surface of your cups and bowls so they sparkle in the sun, while the insides are maggoty with your greed and gluttony.
NABRE
25"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence.
MSG
26Stupid Pharisee! Scour the insides, and then the gleaming surface will mean something.
NABRE
26Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.
MSG
27"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You're like manicured grave plots, grass clipped and the flowers bright, but six feet down it's all rotting bones and worm-eaten flesh.
NABRE
27"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and every kind of filth.
MSG
28People look at you and think you're saints, but beneath the skin you're total frauds.
NABRE
28Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.
MSG
29"You're hopeless, you religion scholars and Pharisees! Frauds! You build granite tombs for your prophets and marble monuments for your saints.
NABRE
29"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous,
MSG
30And you say that if you had lived in the days of your ancestors, no blood would have been on your hands.
NABRE
30and you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets' blood.'
MSG
31You protest too much! You're cut from the same cloth as those murderers,
NABRE
31Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets;
MSG
32and daily add to the death count.
NABRE
32now fill up what your ancestors measured out!
MSG
33"Snakes! Reptilian sneaks! Do you think you can worm your way out of this? Never have to pay the piper?
NABRE
33You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you flee from the judgment of Gehenna?
MSG
34It's on account of people like you that I send prophets and wise guides and scholars generation after generation—and generation after generation you treat them like dirt, greeting them with lynch mobs, hounding them with abuse.
NABRE
34Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,
MSG
35"You can't squirm out of this: Every drop of righteous blood ever spilled on this earth, beginning with the blood of that good man Abel right down to the blood of Zechariah, Barachiah's son, whom you murdered at his prayers, is on your head.
NABRE
35so that there may come upon you all the righteous blood shed upon earth, from the righteous blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
MSG
36All this, I'm telling you, is coming down on you, on your generation.
NABRE
36Amen, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
MSG
37"Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Murderer of prophets! Killer of the ones who brought you God's news! How often I've ached to embrace your children, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you wouldn't let me.
NABRE
37"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling!
MSG
38And now you're so desolate, nothing but a ghost town.
NABRE
38Behold, your house will be abandoned, desolate.
MSG
39What is there left to say? Only this: I'm out of here soon. The next time you see me you'll say, 'Oh, God has blessed him! He's come, bringing God's rule!' "
NABRE
39I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
