1"God's kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom.

1O reino do céu será semelhante a dez virgens que, tomando as suas lâmpadas, saíram ao encontro do noivo.

2Five were silly and five were smart.

2Cinco delas eram insensatas, e cinco, prudentes.

3The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil.

4The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps.

5The bridegroom didn't show up when they expected him, and they all fell asleep.

6"In the middle of the night someone yelled out, 'He's here! The bridegroom's here! Go out and greet him!'

9"They answered, 'There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.'

10"They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked.

10E, assim que elas saíram para comprá-lo, o noivo chegou; as que estavam preparadas entraram com ele para a festa de casamento, e fechou-se a porta.

11"Much later, the other virgins, the silly ones, showed up and knocked on the door, saying, 'Master, we're here. Let us in.'

11Depois também chegaram as outras virgens e disseram: Senhor! Senhor! Abre-nos a porta.

12"He answered, 'Do I know you? I don't think I know you.'

12Ele, porém, respondeu: Em verdade vos digo que não vos conheço.

13"So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive.

13Portanto, vigiai, pois não sabeis nem o dia nem a hora.

14"It's also like a man going off on an extended trip. He called his servants together and delegated responsibilities.

14Também é como um homem que, ausentando-se do país, chamou seus servos e lhes entregou seus bens:

15To one he gave five thousand dollars, to another two thousand, to a third one thousand, depending on their abilities. Then he left.

16Right off, the first servant went to work and doubled his master's investment.

19"After a long absence, the master of those three servants came back and settled up with them.

21His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.'

22"The servant with the two thousand showed how he also had doubled his master's investment.

22Chegando também o que havia recebido dois talentos, disse: Senhor, entregaste-me dois talentos; aqui estão mais dois que ganhei.

23His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.'

23E o seu senhor lhe disse: Muito bem, servo bom e fiel; foste fiel sobre pouco; sobre muito te colocarei; participa da alegria do teu senhor.

24"The servant given one thousand said, 'Master, I know you have high standards and hate careless ways, that you demand the best and make no allowances for error.

24Por fim, chegando o que havia recebido um talento, disse: Senhor, eu sabia que és um homem severo, que colhes onde não semeaste e recolhes onde não plantaste;

25I was afraid I might disappoint you, so I found a good hiding place and secured your money. Here it is, safe and sound down to the last cent.'

25então, fiquei com medo e fui esconder na terra o teu talento; aqui tens o que é teu.

26"The master was furious. 'That's a terrible way to live! It's criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least?

26Mas o seu senhor lhe respondeu: Servo mau e preguiçoso, sabias que colho onde não semeei e recolho onde não plantei?

27The least you could have done would have been to invest the sum with the bankers, where at least I would have gotten a little interest.

27Devias então entregar meu dinheiro aos banqueiros e, ao voltar, eu o teria recebido com juros.

28" 'Take the thousand and give it to the one who risked the most. And get rid of this "play-it-safe" who won't go out on a limb.

29Pois a todo o que tem, mais lhe será dado, e terá com fartura; mas ao que não tem, até aquilo que tem lhe será tirado.

30Throw him out into utter darkness.'

30Lançai o servo inútil nas trevas exteriores; ali haverá choro e ranger de dentes.

31"When he finally arrives, blazing in beauty and all his angels with him, the Son of Man will take his place on his glorious throne.

31Quando, pois, o Filho do homem vier na sua glória, e todos os anjos com ele, então se sentará no seu trono glorioso;

32Then all the nations will be arranged before him and he will sort the people out, much as a shepherd sorts out sheep and goats,

32e todas as nações serão reunidas diante dele; e ele separará uns dos outros, à semelhança do pastor que separa as ovelhas dos cabritos;

33putting sheep to his right and goats to his left.

33e porá as ovelhas à sua direita, mas os cabritos, à esquerda.

34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what's coming to you in this kingdom. It's been ready for you since the world's foundation.

34Então o Rei dirá aos que estiverem à sua direita: Vinde, benditos de meu Pai. Possuí por herança o reino que vos está preparado desde a fundação do mundo;

35And here's why: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room,

35porque tive fome, e me destes de comer; tive sede, e me destes de beber; era estrangeiro, e me acolhestes;

36I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.'

36precisei de roupas, e me vestistes; estive doente, e me visitastes; estava na prisão e fostes visitar-me.

37"Then those 'sheep' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink?

37Então os justos lhe perguntarão: Senhor, quando te vimos com fome e te demos de comer, ou com sede e te demos de beber?

38And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?'

38Quando te vimos como estrangeiro e te acolhemos, ou precisando de roupas e te vestimos?

39Quando te vimos doente, ou na prisão, e fomos visitar-te?

40Then the King will say, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.'

40E o Rei lhes responderá: Em verdade vos digo que sempre que o fizestes a um destes meus irmãos, ainda que dos mais pequeninos, a mim o fizestes.

41"Then he will turn to the 'goats,' the ones on his left, and say, 'Get out, worthless goats! You're good for nothing but the fires of hell.

41Então ele dirá também aos que estiverem à sua esquerda: Malditos, afastai-vos de mim para o fogo eterno, preparado para o Diabo e seus anjos;

42And why? Because— I was hungry and you gave me no meal, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,

42pois tive fome, e não me destes de comer; tive sede, e não me destes de beber;

43I was homeless and you gave me no bed, I was shivering and you gave me no clothes, Sick and in prison, and you never visited.'

43era estrangeiro, e não me acolhestes; estive nu, e não me vestistes; doente, e na prisão, e não me visitastes.

44"Then those 'goats' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or homeless or shivering or sick or in prison and didn't help?'

44Então, eles também perguntarão: Senhor, quando te vimos com fome, ou com sede, ou estrangeiro, ou sem roupas, ou doente, ou na prisão, e não cuidamos de ti?

45"He will answer them, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me—you failed to do it to me.'

45E ele lhes responderá: Em verdade vos digo que sempre que o deixastes de fazer a um destes mais pequeninos, deixastes de fazê-lo a mim.

46"Then those 'goats' will be herded to their eternal doom, but the 'sheep' to their eternal reward."

46E eles irão para o castigo eterno, mas os justos irão para a vida eterna.
