MSG
1"Don't pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults—unless, of course, you want the same treatment.
AMP
1" Do not judge and criticize and condemn , so that you will not be judged .
MSG
2That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging.
AMP
2For just as you judge others , so will you be judged; and in accordance with your standard of measure , judgment will be measured to you.
MSG
3It's easy to see a smudge on your neighbor's face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own.
AMP
3Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice and acknowledge the log that is in your own eye?
MSG
4Do you have the nerve to say, 'Let me wash your face for you,' when your own face is distorted by contempt?
AMP
4Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me get the speck out of your eye,' when there is a log in your own eye?
MSG
5It's this whole traveling road-show mentality all over again, playing a holier-than-thou part instead of just living your part. Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face, and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor.
AMP
5You hypocrite (play-actor, pretender), first get the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.
MSG
6"Don't be flip with the sacred. Banter and silliness give no honor to God. Don't reduce holy mysteries to slogans. In trying to be relevant, you're only being cute and inviting sacrilege.
AMP
6"Do not give that which is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, for they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
MSG
7"Don't bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need.
AMP
7" Ask and keep on asking and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking and you will find; knock and keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.
MSG
8This isn't a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we're in.
AMP
8For everyone who keeps on asking receives, and he who keeps on seeking finds, and to him who keeps on knocking, it will be opened.
MSG
9If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust?
AMP
9Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
MSG
10If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate?
AMP
10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
MSG
11As bad as you are, you wouldn't think of such a thing. You're at least decent to your own children. So don't you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better?
AMP
11If you then, evil (sinful by nature) as you are, know how to give good and advantageous gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good and advantageous to those who keep on asking Him.
MSG
12"Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them. Add up God's Law and Prophets and this is what you get.
AMP
12"So then, in everything treat others the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
MSG
13"Don't look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don't fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do.
AMP
13"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad and easy to travel is the path that leads the way to destruction and eternal loss, and there are many who enter through it.
MSG
14The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention.
AMP
14But small is the gate and narrow and difficult to travel is the path that leads the way to life, and there are few who find it.
MSG
15"Be wary of false preachers who smile a lot, dripping with practiced sincerity. Chances are they are out to rip you off some way or other. Don't be impressed with charisma; look for character.
AMP
15"Beware of the false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep , but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
MSG
16Who preachers are is the main thing, not what they say. A genuine leader will never exploit your emotions or your pocketbook. These diseased trees with their bad apples are going to be chopped down and burned.
AMP
16By their fruit you will recognize them . Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?
MSG—
AMP
17Even so, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the unhealthy tree bears bad fruit.
MSG—
AMP
18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
MSG—
AMP
19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
MSG—
AMP
20Therefore, by their fruit you will recognize them .
MSG
21"Knowing the correct password—saying 'Master, Master,' for instance—isn't going to get you anywhere with me. What is required is serious obedience—doing what my Father wills.
AMP
21"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.
MSG
22I can see it now—at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, 'Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.'
AMP
22Many will say to Me on that day , 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, and driven out demons in Your name, and done many miracles in Your name?'
MSG
23And do you know what I am going to say? 'You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don't impress me one bit. You're out of here.'
AMP
23And then I will declare to them publicly, 'I never knew you; depart from Me , you who act wickedly .'
MSG
24"These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock.
AMP
24"So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
MSG
25Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.
AMP
25And the rain fell, and the floods and torrents came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
MSG
26"But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don't work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach.
AMP
26And everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not do them, will be like a foolish (stupid) man who built his house on the sand.
MSG
27When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards."
AMP
27And the rain fell, and the floods and torrents came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great and complete was its fall."
MSG
28When Jesus concluded his address, the crowd burst into applause. They had never heard teaching like this.
AMP
28When Jesus had finished these words , the crowds were astonished and overwhelmed at His teaching;
MSG
29It was apparent that he was living everything he was saying—quite a contrast to their religion teachers! This was the best teaching they had ever heard.
AMP
29for He was teaching them as one who had authority , and not as their scribes .
