1So get yourselves together. Shape up!You're a nation without a clue about what it wants.

2Do it before you're blown awaylike leaves in a windstorm,Before God's Judgment-angersweeps down on you,Before God's Judgment Day wrathdescends with full force.

2Before you are driven away,like chaff that disappears;Before there comes upon youthe blazing anger of the Lord;Before there comes upon youthe day of the Lord's anger.

3Seek God, all you quietly disciplined peoplewho live by God's justice.Seek God's right ways. Seek a quiet and disciplined life.Perhaps you'll be hidden on the Day of God's anger.

3Seek the Lord,all you humble of the land,who have observed his law;Seek justice,seek humility;Perhaps you will be shelteredon the day of the Lord's anger.

4Gaza is scheduled for demolition,Ashdod will be cleaned out by high noon,Ekron pulled out by the roots.

4For Gaza shall be forsaken,and Ashkelon shall be a waste,Ashdod they shall drive out at midday,and Ekron shall be uprooted.

5Doom to the seaside people,the seafaring people from Crete!The Word of God is bad news for youwho settled Canaan, the Philistine country:"You're slated for destruction—no survivors!"

5Ah! You who dwell by the seacoast,the nation of Cherethites, the word of the Lord is against you!O Canaan, land of the Philistines,I will leave you to perish without an inhabitant!

6The lands of the seafarerswill become pastureland,A country for shepherds and sheep.

6You shall become fields for shepherds,and folds for flocks.

7What's left of the family of Judah will get it.Day after day they'll pasture by the sea,and go home in the evening to Ashkelon to sleep.Their very own God will look out for them.He'll make things as good as before.

7The seacoast shall belongto the remnant of the house of Judah;by the sea they shall pasture.In the houses of Ashkelonthey shall lie down in the evening.For the Lord their God will take care of them,and bring about their restoration.

8"I've heard the crude taunts of Moab,the mockeries flung by Ammon,The cruel talk they've used to put down my people,their self-important strutting along Israel's borders.

8I have heard the taunts uttered by Moab,and the insults of the Ammonites, When they taunted my peopleand made boasts against their territory.

9Therefore, as sure as I am the living God," saysGod-of-the-Angel-Armies,Israel's personal God,"Moab will become a ruin like Sodom,Ammon a ghost town like Gomorrah,One a field of rocks, the other a sterile salt flat,a moonscape forever.What's left of my people will finish them off,will pick them clean and take over.

9Therefore, as I live—oracle of the Lord of hosts—the God of Israel,Moab shall become like Sodom,the Ammonites like Gomorrah:A field of weeds,a salt pit,a waste forever.The remnant of my people shall plunder them,the survivors of my nation dispossess them.

10This is what they get for their bloated pride,their taunts and mockeries of the peopleof God-of-the-Angel-Armies.

10This will be the recompense for their pride,because they taunted and boasted againstthe people of the Lord of hosts.

11God will be seen as truly terrible—a Holy Terror.All earth-made gods will shrivel up and blow away;And everyone, wherever they are, far or near,will fall to the ground and worship him.

11The Lord shall inspire them with terrorwhen he makes all the gods of earth waste away;Then the distant shores of the nations,each from its own place,shall bow down to him.

12Also you Ethiopians,you too will die—I'll see to it."

12You too, O Cushites, shall be slain by the sword of the Lord.

13Then God will reach into the northand destroy Assyria.He will waste Nineveh,leave her dry and treeless as a desert.

13He will stretch out his hand against the north,to destroy Assyria;He will make Nineveh a waste,dry as the desert.

14The ghost town of a city,the haunt of wild animals,Nineveh will be home to raccoons and coyotes—they'll bed down in its ruins.Owls will hoot in the windows, ravens will croak in the doorways—all that fancy woodwork now a perch for birds.

14In her midst flocks shall lie down,all the wild life of the hollows;The screech owl and the desert owlshall roost in her columns;The owl shall hoot from the window,the raven croak from the doorway.

15Can this be the famous Fun Citythat had it made,That boasted, "I'm the Number-One City!I'm King of the Mountain!"So why is the place deserted,a lair for wild animals?Passersby hardly give it a look;they dismiss it with a gesture.

15Is this the exultant city that dwelt secure,That told itself,"I and there is no one else"?How it has become a waste,a lair for wild animals!Those who pass by ithiss, and shake their fists!
