1Doom to the rebellious city,the home of oppressors—Sewer City!

1Ah! Rebellious and polluted,the tyrannical city!

2The city that wouldn't take advice,wouldn't accept correction,Wouldn't trust God,wouldn't even get close to her own god!
NABRE
2It listens to no voice,accepts no correction;In the Lord it has not trusted,nor drawn near to its God.
MSG
3Her very own leadersare rapacious lions,Her judges are rapacious timber wolvesout every morning prowling for a fresh kill.

3Its officials within itare roaring lions;Its judges are desert wolvesthat have no bones to gnaw by morning.

4Her prophets are out for what they can get.They're opportunists—you can't trust them.Her priests desecrate the Sanctuary.They use God's law as a weapon to maim and kill souls.

4Its prophets are reckless,treacherous people;Its priests profane what is holy,and do violence to the law.

5Yet God remains righteous in her midst,untouched by the evil.He stays at it, day after day, meting out justice.At evening he's still at it, strong as ever.But evil men and women, without conscienceand without shame, persist in evil.

5But the Lord in its midst is just,doing no wrong;Morning after morning rendering judgmentunfailingly, at dawn;the wicked, however, know no shame.

6"So I cut off the godless nations.I knocked down their defense posts,Filled her roads with rubbleso no one could get through.Her cities were bombed-out ruins,unlivable and unlived in.

6I have cut down nations,their battlements are laid waste;I have made their streets deserted,with no one passing through;Their cities are devastated,with no one dwelling in them.

7"I thought, 'Surely she'll honor me now,accept my discipline and correction,Find a way of escape from the trouble she's in,find relief from the punishment I'm bringing.'But it didn't faze her. Bright and earlyshe was up at it again, doing the same old things.

7I said, "Surely now you will fear me,you will accept correction;They cannot fail to seeall I have brought upon them."Yet the more eagerly they have doneall their corrupt deeds.

8"Well, if that's what you want, stick around."God's Decree."Your day in court is coming,but remember I'll be there to bring evidence.I'll bring all the nations to the courtroom,round up all the kingdoms,And let them feel the brunt of my anger,my raging wrath.My zeal is a firethat will purge and purify the earth.

8Therefore, wait for me—oracle of the Lord—until the day when I arise as accuser;For it is my decision to gather nations,to assemble kingdoms,In order to pour out upon them my wrath,all my blazing anger;For in the fire of my passionall the earth will be consumed.

9"In the end I will turn things around for the people.I'll give them a language undistorted, unpolluted,Words to address God in worshipand, united, to serve me with their shoulders to the wheel.

9For then I will make purethe speech of the peoples,That they all may call upon the name of the Lord,to serve him with one accord;

10They'll come from beyond the Ethiopian rivers,they'll come praying—All my scattered, exiled peoplewill come home with offerings for worship.

10From beyond the rivers of Ethiopiaand as far as the recesses of the North,they shall bring me offerings.

11You'll no longer have to be ashamedof all those acts of rebellion.I'll have gotten rid of your arrogant leaders.No more pious strutting on my holy hill!

11On that dayYou will not be ashamedof all your deeds,when you rebelled against me;For then I will remove from your midstthe proud braggarts,And you shall no longer exalt yourselfon my holy mountain.

12I'll leave a core of people among youwho are poor in spirit—What's left of Israel that's really Israel.They'll make their home in God.

12But I will leave as a remnant in your midsta people humble and lowly,Who shall take refuge in the name of the Lord—

13This core holy peoplewill not do wrong.They won't lie,won't use words to flatter or seduce.Content with who they are and where they are,unanxious, they'll live at peace."

13the remnant of Israel.They shall do no wrongand speak no lies;Nor shall there be found in their mouthsa deceitful tongue;They shall pasture and lie downwith none to disturb them.

14So sing, Daughter Zion!Raise the rafters, Israel!Daughter Jerusalem,be happy! celebrate!

14Shout for joy, daughter Zion!sing joyfully, Israel!Be glad and exult with all your heart,daughter Jerusalem!

15God has reversed his judgments against youand sent your enemies off chasing their tails.From now on, God is Israel's king,in charge at the center.There's nothing to fear from evilever again!

15The Lord has removed the judgment against you,he has turned away your enemies;The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst,you have no further misfortune to fear.

16Jerusalem will be told:"Don't be afraid.Dear Zion,don't despair.

16On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem:Do not fear, Zion,do not be discouraged!

17Your God is present among you,a strong Warrior there to save you.Happy to have you back, he'll calm you with his loveand delight you with his songs.

17The Lord, your God, is in your midst,a mighty savior,Who will rejoice over you with gladness,and renew you in his love,Who will sing joyfully because of you,

18"The accumulated sorrows of your exilewill dissipate.I, your God, will get rid of them for you.You've carried those burdens long enough.

18as on festival days.I will remove disaster from among you,so that no one may recount your disgrace.

19At the same time, I'll get rid of all thosewho've made your life miserable.I'll heal the maimed;I'll bring home the homeless.In the very countries where they were hatedthey will be venerated.

19At that time I will dealwith all who oppress you;I will save the lame,and assemble the outcasts;I will give them praise and renownin every land where they were shamed.

20On Judgment DayI'll bring you back home—a great family gathering!You'll be famous and honoredall over the world.You'll see it with your own eyes—all those painful partings turned into reunions!"God's Promise.

20At that time I will bring you home,and at that time I will gather you;For I will give you renown and praise,among all the peoples of the earth,When I bring about your restorationbefore your very eyes, says the Lord.
