1Doom to the rebellious city,the home of oppressors—Sewer City!

1Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled, The tyrannical city!

2The city that wouldn't take advice,wouldn't accept correction,Wouldn't trust God,wouldn't even get close to her own god!

2She heeded no voice, She accepted no instruction. She did not trust in the LORD, She did not draw near to her God.

3Her very own leadersare rapacious lions,Her judges are rapacious timber wolvesout every morning prowling for a fresh kill.

3Her princes within her are roaring lions, Her judges are wolves at evening; They leave nothing for the morning.

4Her prophets are out for what they can get.They're opportunists—you can't trust them.Her priests desecrate the Sanctuary.They use God's law as a weapon to maim and kill souls.

4Her prophets are reckless, treacherous men; Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the law.

5Yet God remains righteous in her midst,untouched by the evil.He stays at it, day after day, meting out justice.At evening he's still at it, strong as ever.But evil men and women, without conscienceand without shame, persist in evil.

5The LORD is righteous within her; He will do no injustice. Every morning He brings His justice to light; He does not fail. But the unjust knows no shame.

6"So I cut off the godless nations.I knocked down their defense posts,Filled her roads with rubbleso no one could get through.Her cities were bombed-out ruins,unlivable and unlived in.

6'I have cut off nations; Their corner towers are in ruins. I have made their streets desolate, With no one passing by; Their cities are laid waste, Without a man, without an inhabitant.

7"I thought, 'Surely she'll honor me now,accept my discipline and correction,Find a way of escape from the trouble she's in,find relief from the punishment I'm bringing.'But it didn't faze her. Bright and earlyshe was up at it again, doing the same old things.

7'I said, 'Surely you will revere Me, Accept instruction.' So her dwelling will not be cut off all that I have appointed concerning her. But they were eager to corrupt all their deeds.

8"Well, if that's what you want, stick around."God's Decree."Your day in court is coming,but remember I'll be there to bring evidence.I'll bring all the nations to the courtroom,round up all the kingdoms,And let them feel the brunt of my anger,my raging wrath.My zeal is a firethat will purge and purify the earth.

8'Therefore wait for Me,' declares the LORD, 'For the day when I rise up as a witness. Indeed, My decision is to gather nations, To assemble kingdoms, To pour out on them My indignation, All My burning anger; For all the earth will be devoured By the fire of My zeal.

9"In the end I will turn things around for the people.I'll give them a language undistorted, unpolluted,Words to address God in worshipand, united, to serve me with their shoulders to the wheel.

9'For then I will give to the peoples purified lips, That all of them may call on the name of the LORD, To serve Him shoulder to shoulder.

10They'll come from beyond the Ethiopian rivers,they'll come praying—All my scattered, exiled peoplewill come home with offerings for worship.

10'From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia My worshipers, My dispersed ones, Will bring My offerings.

11You'll no longer have to be ashamedof all those acts of rebellion.I'll have gotten rid of your arrogant leaders.No more pious strutting on my holy hill!

11'In that day you will feel no shame Because of all your deeds By which you have rebelled against Me; For then I will remove from your midst Your proud, exulting ones, And you will never again be haughty On My holy mountain.

12I'll leave a core of people among youwho are poor in spirit—What's left of Israel that's really Israel.They'll make their home in God.

12'But I will leave among you A humble and lowly people, And they will take refuge in the name of the LORD.

13This core holy peoplewill not do wrong.They won't lie,won't use words to flatter or seduce.Content with who they are and where they are,unanxious, they'll live at peace."

13'The remnant of Israel will do no wrong And tell no lies, Nor will a deceitful tongue Be found in their mouths; For they will feed and lie down With no one to make them tremble.'

14Shout for joy, O daughter of Zion! Shout , O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!

15God has reversed his judgments against youand sent your enemies off chasing their tails.From now on, God is Israel's king,in charge at the center.There's nothing to fear from evilever again!

15The LORD has taken away judgments against you, He has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; You will fear disaster no more.

16Jerusalem will be told:"Don't be afraid.Dear Zion,don't despair.

16In that day it will be said to Jerusalem: 'Do not be afraid, O Zion; Do not let your hands fall limp.

17Your God is present among you,a strong Warrior there to save you.Happy to have you back, he'll calm you with his loveand delight you with his songs.

17'The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.

18"The accumulated sorrows of your exilewill dissipate.I, your God, will get rid of them for you.You've carried those burdens long enough.

18'I will gather those who grieve about the appointed feasts-- They came from you, ; reproach is a burden on them.

19At the same time, I'll get rid of all thosewho've made your life miserable.I'll heal the maimed;I'll bring home the homeless.In the very countries where they were hatedthey will be venerated.

19'Behold, I am going to deal at that time With all your oppressors, I will save the lame And gather the outcast, And I will turn their shame into praise and renown In all the earth.

20On Judgment DayI'll bring you back home—a great family gathering!You'll be famous and honoredall over the world.You'll see it with your own eyes—all those painful partings turned into reunions!"God's Promise.
