1The man had intercourse with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, saying, "I have produced a male child with the help of the Lord."

1Adam slept with Eve his wife. She conceived and had Cain. She said, "I've gotten a man, with God's help!"

2Next she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel became a herder of flocks, and Cain a tiller of the ground.
MSG
2Then she had another baby, Abel. Abel was a herdsman and Cain a farmer.

3In the course of time Cain brought an offering to the Lord from the fruit of the ground,
MSG
3Time passed. Cain brought an offering to God from the produce of his farm.
NABRE
4while Abel, for his part, brought the fatty portion of the firstlings of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
MSG
4Abel also brought an offering, but from the firstborn animals of his herd, choice cuts of meat. God liked Abel and his offering,

5but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry and dejected.

5but Cain and his offering didn't get his approval. Cain lost his temper and went into a sulk.

6Then the Lord said to Cain: Why are you angry? Why are you dejected?
MSG
6God spoke to Cain: "Why this tantrum? Why the sulking?
NABRE
7If you act rightly, you will be accepted; but if not, sin lies in wait at the door: its urge is for you, yet you can rule over it.
MSG
7If you do well, won't you be accepted? And if you don't do well, sin is lying in wait for you, ready to pounce; it's out to get you, you've got to master it."

8Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let us go out in the field." When they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
MSG
8Cain had words with his brother. They were out in the field; Cain came at Abel his brother and killed him.
NABRE
9Then the Lord asked Cain, Where is your brother Abel? He answered, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
MSG
9God said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?"He said, "How should I know? Am I his babysitter?"
NABRE
10God then said: What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground!
MSG
10God said, "What have you done! The voice of your brother's blood is calling to me from the ground.
NABRE
11Now you are banned from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
MSG
11From now on you'll get nothing but curses from this ground; you'll be driven from this ground that has opened its arms to receive the blood of your murdered brother.
NABRE
12If you till the ground, it shall no longer give you its produce. You shall become a constant wanderer on the earth.
MSG
12You'll farm this ground, but it will no longer give you its best. You'll be a homeless wanderer on Earth."
NABRE
13Cain said to the Lord: "My punishment is too great to bear.
MSG
13Cain said to God, "My punishment is too much. I can't take it!
NABRE
14Look, you have now banished me from the ground. I must avoid you and be a constant wanderer on the earth. Anyone may kill me at sight."
MSG
14You've thrown me off the land and I can never again face you. I'm a homeless wanderer on Earth and whoever finds me will kill me."
NABRE
15Not so! the Lord said to him. If anyone kills Cain, Cain shall be avenged seven times. So the Lord put a mark on Cain, so that no one would kill him at sight.
MSG
15God told him, "No. Anyone who kills Cain will pay for it seven times over." God put a mark on Cain to protect him so that no one who met him would kill him.

16Cain then left the Lord's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

16Cain left the presence of God and lived in No-Man's-Land, east of Eden.

17Cain had intercourse with his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. Cain also became the founder of a city, which he named after his son Enoch.

19Lamech took two wives; the name of the first was Adah, and the name of the second Zillah.

22Zillah, on her part, gave birth to Tubalcain, the ancestor of all who forge instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.

22Zillah gave birth to Tubal-Cain, who worked at the forge making bronze and iron tools. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.

23Lamech said to his wives:"Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;wives of Lamech, listen to my utterance:I have killed a man for wounding me,a young man for bruising me.

23Lamech said to his wives,Adah and Zillah, listen to me;you wives of Lamech, hear me out:I killed a man for wounding me,a young man who attacked me.

24If Cain is avenged seven times,then Lamech seventy-seven times."

24If Cain is avenged seven times,for Lamech it's seventy-seven!

25Adam again had intercourse with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she called Seth. "God has granted me another offspring in place of Abel," she said, "because Cain killed him."

25Adam slept with his wife again. She had a son whom she named Seth. She said, "God has given me another child in place of Abel whom Cain killed."

26To Seth, in turn, a son was born, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to invoke the Lord by name.

26And then Seth had a son whom he named Enosh.That's when men and women began praying and worshiping in the name of God.
