NABRE
1At this, the whole community broke out with loud cries, and the people wept into the night.
MSG
1The whole community was in an uproar, wailing all night long.
NABRE
2All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, the whole community saying to them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt," or "If only we would die here in the wilderness!
MSG
2All the People of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The entire community was in on it: "Why didn't we die in Egypt? Or in this wilderness?
NABRE
3Why is the Lord bringing us into this land only to have us fall by the sword? Our wives and little ones will be taken as spoil. Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"
MSG
3Why has God brought us to this country to kill us? Our wives and children are about to become plunder. Why don't we just head back to Egypt? And right now!"
NABRE
4So they said to one another, "Let us appoint a leader and go back to Egypt."
MSG
4Soon they were all saying it to one another: "Let's pick a new leader; let's head back to Egypt."
NABRE
5But Moses and Aaron fell prostrate before the whole assembled community of the Israelites;
MSG
5Moses and Aaron fell on their faces in front of the entire community, gathered in emergency session.
NABRE
6while Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, who had been among those that reconnoitered the land, tore their garments
MSG
6Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, members of the scouting party, ripped their clothes
NABRE
7and said to the whole community of the Israelites, "The land which we went through and reconnoitered is an exceedingly good land.
MSG
7and addressed the assembled People of Israel: "The land we walked through and scouted out is a very good land—very good indeed.
NABRE
8If the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us in to this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey.
MSG
8If God is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land that flows, as they say, with milk and honey. And he'll give it to us.
NABRE
9Only do not rebel against the Lord! You need not be afraid of the people of the land, for they are but food for us! Their protection has left them, but the Lord is with us. Do not fear them."
MSG
9Just don't rebel against God! And don't be afraid of those people. Why, we'll have them for lunch! They have no protection and God is on our side. Don't be afraid of them!"
NABRE
10The whole community threatened to stone them. But the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites.
MSG
10But, up in arms now, the entire community was talking of hurling stones at them.Just then the bright Glory of God appeared at the Tent of Meeting. Every Israelite saw it.
NABRE
11And the Lord said to Moses: How long will this people spurn me? How long will they not trust me, despite all the signs I have performed among them?
MSG
11God said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me like dirt? How long refuse to trust me? And with all these signs I've done among them!
NABRE
12I will strike them with pestilence and disown them. Then I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.
MSG
12I've had enough—I'm going to hit them with a plague and kill them. But I'll make you into a nation bigger and stronger than they ever were."
NABRE
13But Moses said to the Lord: "The Egyptians will hear of this, for by your power you brought out this people from among them.
MSG
13But Moses said to God, "The Egyptians are going to hear about this! You delivered this people from Egypt with a great show of strength, and now this?
NABRE
14They will tell the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that you, Lord, are in the midst of this people; you, Lord, who directly revealed yourself! Your cloud stands over them, and you go before them by day in a column of cloud and by night in a column of fire.
MSG
14The Egyptians will tell everyone. They've already heard that you are God, that you are on the side of this people, that you are present among them, that they see you with their own eyes in your Cloud that hovers over them, in the Pillar of Cloud that leads them by day and the Pillar of Fire at night.
NABRE
15If now you slay this people all at once, the nations who have heard such reports of you will say,
MSG
15If you kill this entire people in one stroke, all the nations that have heard what has been going on will say,
NABRE
16'The Lord was not able to bring this people into the land he swore to give them; that is why he slaughtered them in the wilderness.'
MSG
16'Since God couldn't get these people into the land which he had promised to give them, he slaughtered them out in the wilderness.'
NABRE
17Now then, may my Lord's forbearance be great, even as you have said,
MSG
17"Now, please, let the power of the Master expand, enlarge itself greatly, along the lines you have laid out earlier when you said,
NABRE
18'The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in kindness, forgiving iniquity and rebellion; yet certainly not declaring the guilty guiltless, but punishing children to the third and fourth generation for their parents' iniquity.'
MSG
18God, slow to get angry and huge in loyal love, forgiving iniquity and rebellion and sin;Still, never just whitewashing sin.But extending the fallout of parents' sinsto children into the third, even the fourth generation.
NABRE
19Pardon, then, the iniquity of this people in keeping with your great kindness, even as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now."
MSG
19"Please forgive the wrongdoing of this people out of the extravagance of your loyal love just as all along, from the time they left Egypt, you have been forgiving this people."
NABRE
20The Lord answered: I pardon them as you have asked.
MSG
20God said, "I forgive them, honoring your words.
NABRE
21Yet, by my life and the Lord's glory that fills the whole earth,
MSG
21But as I live and as the Glory of God fills the whole Earth—
NABRE
22of all the people who have seen my glory and the signs I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and who nevertheless have put me to the test ten times already and have not obeyed me,
MSG
22not a single person of those who saw my Glory, saw the miracle signs I did in Egypt and the wilderness, and who have tested me over and over and over again, turning a deaf ear to me—
NABRE
23not one shall see the land which I promised on oath to their ancestors. None of those who have spurned me shall see it.
MSG
23not one of them will set eyes on the land I so solemnly promised to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with such repeated contempt will see it.
NABRE
24But as for my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and follows me unreservedly, I will bring him into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall possess it.
MSG
24"But my servant Caleb—this is a different story. He has a different spirit; he follows me passionately. I'll bring him into the land that he scouted and his children will inherit it.
NABRE
25But now, since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn away tomorrow and set out into the wilderness by way of the Red Sea road.
MSG
25"Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are so well established in the valleys, for right now change course and head back into the wilderness following the route to the Red Sea."
NABRE
26The Lord also said to Moses and Aaron:
MSG
26God spoke to Moses and Aaron:
NABRE
27How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the Israelites against me.
MSG
27"How long is this going to go on, all this grumbling against me by this evil-infested community? I've had my fill of complaints from these grumbling Israelites.
NABRE
28Tell them: "By my life"—oracle of the Lord—"I will do to you just what I have heard you say.
MSG
28Tell them, As I live—God's decree—here's what I'm going to do:
NABRE
29Here in the wilderness your dead bodies shall fall. Of all your men of twenty years or more, enrolled in your registration, who grumbled against me,
MSG
29Your corpses are going to litter the wilderness—every one of you twenty years and older who was counted in the census, this whole generation of grumblers and grousers.
NABRE
30not one of you shall enter the land where I solemnly swore to settle you, except Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun.
MSG
30Not one of you will enter the land and make your home there, the firmly and solemnly promised land, except for Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
NABRE
31Your little ones, however, who you said would be taken as spoil, I will bring in, and they shall know the land you rejected.
MSG
31"Your children, the very ones that you said would be taken for plunder, I'll bring in to enjoy the land you rejected
NABRE
32But as for you, your bodies shall fall here in the wilderness,
MSG
32while your corpses will be rotting in the wilderness.
NABRE
33while your children will wander for forty years, suffering for your infidelity, till the last of you lies dead in the wilderness.
MSG
33These children of yours will live as shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, living with the fallout of your whoring unfaithfulness until the last of your generation lies a corpse in the wilderness.
NABRE
34Corresponding to the number of days you spent reconnoitering the land—forty days—you shall bear your punishment one year for each day: forty years. Thus you will realize what it means to oppose me.
MSG
34You scouted out the land for forty days; your punishment will be a year for each day, a forty-year sentence to serve for your sins—a long schooling in my displeasure.
NABRE
35I, the Lord, have spoken; and I will surely do this to this entire wicked community that conspired against me: here in the wilderness they shall come to their end and there they will die."
MSG
35"I, God, have spoken. I will most certainly carry out these things against this entire evil-infested community which has banded together against me. In this wilderness they will come to their end. There they will die."
NABRE
36And the men whom Moses had sent to reconnoiter the land and who on returning had set the whole community grumbling against him by spreading discouraging reports about the land—
MSG
36So it happened that the men Moses sent to scout out the land returned to circulate false rumors about the land causing the entire community to grumble against Moses—
NABRE
37these men who had spread discouraging reports about the land were struck down by the Lord and died.
MSG
37all these men died. Having spread false rumors of the land, they died in a plague, confronted by God.
NABRE
38Only Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, survived of all the men who had gone to reconnoiter the land.
MSG
38Only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh were left alive of the men who went to scout out the land.
NABRE
39When Moses repeated these words to all the Israelites, the people mourned greatly.
MSG
39When Moses told all of this to the People of Israel, they mourned long and hard.
NABRE
40Early the next morning they started up high into the hill country, saying, "Here we are, ready to go up to the place that the Lord spoke of: for we did wrong."
MSG
40But early the next morning they started out for the high hill country, saying, "We're here; we're ready—let's go up and attack the land that God promised us. We sinned, but now we're ready."
NABRE
41But Moses said, "Why are you now transgressing the Lord's order? This cannot succeed.
MSG
41But Moses said, "Why are you crossing God's command yet again? This won't work.
NABRE
42Do not go up, because the Lord is not in your midst; do not allow yourself to be struck down by your enemies.
MSG
42Don't attack. God isn't with you in this—you'll be beaten badly by your enemies.
NABRE
43For there the Amalekites and Canaanites will face you, and you will fall by the sword. You have turned back from following the Lord; therefore the Lord will not be with you."
MSG
43The Amalekites and Canaanites are ready for you and they'll kill you. Because you have left off obediently following God, God is not going to be with you in this."
NABRE
44Yet they dared to go up high into the hill country, even though neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses left the camp.
MSG
44But they went anyway; recklessly and arrogantly they climbed to the high hill country. But the Chest of the Covenant and Moses didn't budge from the camp.
NABRE
45And the Amalekites and Canaanites who dwelt in that hill country came down and defeated them, beating them back as far as Hormah.
MSG
45The Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in the hill country came out of the hills and attacked and beat them, a rout all the way down to Hormah.
