1ERA então Jefté, o gileadita, homem valoroso, porém filho de uma prostituta; mas Gileade gerara a Jefté.

1Jephthah the Gileadite was one tough warrior. He was the son of a whore, but Gilead was his father.

2Também a mulher de Gileade lhe deu filhos, e, sendo os filhos desta mulher já grandes, expulsaram a Jefté, e lhe disseram: Não herdarás na casa de nosso pai, porque és filho de outra mulher.

2Meanwhile Gilead's legal wife had given him other sons, and when they grew up, his wife's sons threw Jephthah out. They told him: "You're not getting any of our family inheritance—you're the son of another woman."

3Então Jefté fugiu de diante de seus irmãos, e habitou na terra de Tobe; e homens levianos se ajuntaram a Jefté, e saíam com ele.

3So Jephthah fled from his brothers and went to live in the land of Tob. Some riff-raff joined him and went around with him.

4E aconteceu que, depois de algum tempo, os filhos de Amom pelejaram contra Israel.

4Some time passed. And then the Ammonites started fighting Israel.

5E sucedeu que, como os filhos de Amom pelejassem contra Israel, foram os anciãos de Gileade buscar a Jefté na terra de Tobe.

5With the Ammonites at war with them, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.

6E disseram a Jefté: Vem, e sê o nosso chefe; para que combatamos contra os filhos de Amom.

6They said to Jephthah: "Come. Be our general and we'll fight the Ammonites."

7Porém Jefté disse aos anciãos de Gileade: Porventura não me odiastes a mim, e não me expulsastes da casa de meu pai? Por que, pois, agora viestes a mim, quando estais em aperto?

7But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead: "But you hate me. You kicked me out of my family home. So why are you coming to me now? Because you are in trouble. Right?"

8E disseram os anciãos de Gileade a Jefté: Por isso tornamos a ti, para que venhas conosco, e combatas contra os filhos de Amom; e nos sejas por chefe sobre todos os moradores de Gileade.

8The elders of Gilead replied, "That's it exactly. We've come to you to get you to go with us and fight the Ammonites. You'll be the head of all of us, all the Gileadites."

9Então Jefté disse aos anciãos de Gileade: Se me levardes de volta para combater contra os filhos de Amom, e o SENHOR mos der diante de mim, então eu vos serei por chefe?

9Jephthah addressed the elders of Gilead, "So if you bring me back home to fight the Ammonites and God gives them to me, I'll be your head—is that right?"

10E disseram os anciãos de Gileade a Jefté: O SENHOR será testemunha entre nós, e assim o faremos conforme a tua palavra.

10They said, "God is witness between us; whatever you say, we'll do."

11Assim Jefté foi com os anciãos de Gileade, e o povo o pôs por chefe e príncipe sobre si; e Jefté falou todas as suas palavras perante o SENHOR em Mizpá.

11Jephthah went along with the elders of Gilead. The people made him their top man and general. And Jephthah repeated what he had said before God at Mizpah.

12E enviou Jefté mensageiros ao rei dos filhos de Amom, dizendo: Que há entre mim e ti, que vieste a mim a pelejar contra a minha terra?

12Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites with a message: "What's going on here that you have come into my country picking a fight?"

13E disse o rei dos filhos de Amom aos mensageiros de Jefté: É porque, saindo Israel do Egito, tomou a minha terra, desde Arnom até Jaboque, e ainda até ao Jordão: Restitui-ma agora, em paz.

13The king of the Ammonites told Jephthah's messengers: "Because Israel took my land when they came up out of Egypt—from the Arnon all the way to the Jabbok and to the Jordan. Give it back peaceably and I'll go."

14Porém Jefté prosseguiu ainda em enviar mensageiros ao rei dos filhos de Amom,

14Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites with the message:

15Dizendo-lhe: Assim diz Jefté: Israel não tomou, nem a terra dos moabitas, nem a terra dos filhos de Amom.

15"Jephthah's word: Israel took no Moabite land and no Ammonite land.

16Porque, subindo Israel do Egito, andou pelo deserto até ao Mar Vermelho, e chegou até Cades.
MSG
16When they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the desert as far as the Red Sea, arriving at Kadesh.

17E Israel enviou mensageiros ao rei dos edomitas, dizendo: Rogo-te que me deixes passar pela tua terra. Porém o rei dos edomitas não lhe deu ouvidos; enviou também ao rei dos moabitas, o qual igualmente não consentiu; e assim Israel ficou em Cades.

17There Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom saying, 'Let us pass through your land, please.' But the king of Edom wouldn't let them. Israel also requested permission from the king of Moab, but he wouldn't let them cross either. They were stopped in their tracks at Kadesh.

18Depois andou pelo deserto e rodeou a terra dos edomitas e a terra dos moabitas, e veio do nascente do sol à terra dos moabitas, e alojou-se além de Arnom; porém não entrou nos limites dos moabitas, porque Arnom é limite dos moabitas.

18So they traveled across the desert and circled around the lands of Edom and Moab. They came out east of the land of Moab and set camp on the other side of the Arnon—they didn't set foot in Moabite territory, for Arnon was the Moabite border.

19Mas Israel enviou mensageiros a Siom, rei dos amorreus, rei de Hesbom; e disse-lhe Israel: Deixa-nos, peço-te, passar pela tua terra até ao meu lugar.

19Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites at Heshbon the capital. Israel asked, 'Let us pass, please, through your land on the way to our country.'

20Porém Siom não confiou em Israel para este passar nos seus limites; antes Siom ajuntou todo o seu povo, e se acamparam em Jasa, e combateu contra Israel.

20But Sihon didn't trust Israel to cut across his land; he got his entire army together, set up camp at Jahaz, and fought Israel.

21E o SENHOR Deus de Israel deu a Siom, com todo o seu povo, na mão de Israel, que os feriu; e Israel tomou por herança toda a terra dos amorreus que habitavam naquela região.

21But God, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his troops to Israel. Israel defeated them. Israel took all the Amorite land,

22all Amorite land from Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.

23Assim o SENHOR Deus de Israel desapossou os amorreus de diante do seu povo de Israel; e os possuirias tu?

23It was God, the God of Israel, who pushed out the Amorites in favor of Israel; so who do you think you are to try to take it over?

24Não possuirias tu aquilo que Quemós, teu deus, desapossasse de diante de ti? Assim possuiremos nós todos quantos o SENHOR nosso Deus desapossar de diante de nós.

24Why don't you just be satisfied with what your god Chemosh gives you and we'll settle for what God, our God, gives us?

25Agora, pois, és tu ainda melhor do que Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei dos moabitas? Porventura contendeu ele em algum tempo com Israel, ou pelejou alguma vez contra ele?

25Do you think you're going to come off better than Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab? Did he get anywhere in opposing Israel? Did he risk war?

26Enquanto Israel habitou trezentos anos em Hesbom e nas suas vilas, e em Aroer e nas suas vilas, em todas as cidades que estão ao longo de Arnom, por que o não recuperastes naquele tempo?

26All this time—it's been three hundred years now!—that Israel has lived in Heshbon and its villages, in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns along the Arnon, why didn't you try to snatch them away then?

27Tampouco pequei eu contra ti! Porém tu usas mal comigo em pelejar contra mim; o SENHOR, que é juiz, julgue hoje entre os filhos de Israel e entre os filhos de Amom.

27No, I haven't wronged you. But this is an evil thing that you are doing to me by starting a fight. Today God the Judge will decide between the People of Israel and the people of Ammon."

28Porém o rei dos filhos de Amom não deu ouvidos às palavras que Jefté lhe enviou.
MSG
28But the king of the Ammonites refused to listen to a word that Jephthah had sent him.

29Então o Espírito do SENHOR veio sobre Jefté, e atravessou ele por Gileade e Manassés, passando por Mizpá de Gileade, e de Mizpá de Gileade passou até aos filhos de Amom.

29God's Spirit came upon Jephthah. He went across Gilead and Manasseh, went through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there approached the Ammonites.

30E Jefté fez um voto ao SENHOR, e disse: Se totalmente deres os filhos de Amom na minha mão,

30Jephthah made a vow before God: "If you give me a clear victory over the Ammonites,

31Aquilo que, saindo da porta de minha casa, me sair ao encontro, voltando eu dos filhos de Amom em paz, isso será do SENHOR, e o oferecerei em holocausto.

31then I'll give to God whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in one piece from among the Ammonites—I'll offer it up in a sacrificial burnt offering."

32Assim Jefté passou aos filhos de Amom, a combater contra eles; e o SENHOR os deu na sua mão.

32Then Jephthah was off to fight the Ammonites. And God gave them to him.

33E os feriu com grande mortandade, desde Aroer até chegar a Minite, vinte cidades, e até Abel-Queramim; assim foram subjugados os filhos de Amom diante dos filhos de Israel.

33He beat them soundly, all the way from Aroer to the area around Minnith as far as Abel Keramim—twenty cities! A massacre! Ammonites brought to their knees by the People of Israel.

34Vindo, pois, Jefté a Mizpá, à sua casa, eis que a sua filha lhe saiu ao encontro com adufes e com danças; e era ela a única filha; não tinha ele outro filho nem filha.

34Jephthah came home to Mizpah. His daughter ran from the house to welcome him home—dancing to tambourines! She was his only child. He had no son or daughter except her.

35E aconteceu que, quando a viu, rasgou as suas vestes, e disse: Ah! filha minha, muito me abateste, e estás entre os que me turbam! Porque eu abri a minha boca ao SENHOR, e não tornarei atrás.

35When he realized who it was, he ripped his clothes, saying, "Ah, dearest daughter—I'm dirt. I'm despicable. My heart is torn to shreds. I made a vow to God and I can't take it back!"

36E ela lhe disse: Meu pai, tu deste a palavra ao SENHOR, faze de mim conforme o que prometeste; pois o SENHOR te vingou dos teus inimigos, os filhos de Amom.

36She said, "Dear father, if you made a vow to God, do to me what you vowed; God did his part and saved you from your Ammonite enemies."

37Disse mais a seu pai: Conceda-me isto: Deixa-me por dois meses que vá, e desça pelos montes, e chore a minha virgindade, eu e as minhas companheiras.

37And then she said to her father, "But let this one thing be done for me. Give me two months to wander through the hills and lament my virginity since I will never marry, I and my dear friends."

38E disse ele: Vai. E deixou-a ir por dois meses; então foi ela com as suas companheiras, e chorou a sua virgindade pelos montes.

38"Oh yes, go," he said. He sent her off for two months. She and her dear girlfriends went among the hills, lamenting that she would never marry.

39E sucedeu que, ao fim de dois meses, tornou ela para seu pai, o qual cumpriu nela o seu voto que tinha feito; e ela não conheceu homem; e daí veio o costume de Israel,

39At the end of the two months, she came back to her father. He fulfilled the vow with her that he had made. She had never slept with a man.It became a custom in Israel

40Que as filhas de Israel iam de ano em ano lamentar, por quatro dias, a filha de Jefté, o gileadita.

40that for four days every year the young women of Israel went out to mourn for the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
