1After we were safe , we found out that the island was called Malta.
MSG
1Once everyone was accounted for and we realized we had all made it, we learned that we were on the island of Malta.
AMP
2And the natives showed us extraordinary kindness and hospitality; for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, since it had begun to rain and was cold.
MSG
2The natives went out of their way to be friendly to us. The day was rainy and cold and we were already soaked to the bone, but they built a huge bonfire and gathered us around it.
AMP
3But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper crawled out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand.
MSG
3Paul pitched in and helped. He had gathered up a bundle of sticks, but when he put it on the fire, a venomous snake, roused from its torpor by the heat, struck his hand and held on.
AMP
4When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying to one another, "Undoubtedly this man is a murderer, and though he has been saved from the sea, Justice has not permitted him to live."
MSG
4Seeing the snake hanging from Paul's hand like that, the natives jumped to the conclusion that he was a murderer getting his just deserts.
AMP
5Then Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.
MSG
5Paul shook the snake off into the fire, none the worse for wear.
AMP
6But they stood watching and expecting him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after they had waited a long time and had seen nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and began saying that he was a god.
MSG
6They kept expecting him to drop dead, but when it was obvious he wasn't going to, they jumped to the conclusion that he was a god!
AMP
7In the vicinity of that place there were estates belonging to the leading man of the island, named Publius, who welcomed and entertained us hospitably for three days.
MSG
7The head man in that part of the island was Publius. He took us into his home as his guests, drying us out and putting us up in fine style for the next three days.
AMP
8And it happened that the father of Publius was sick with recurring attacks of fever and dysentery; and Paul went to him, and after he had prayed, he laid his hands on him and healed him.
MSG
8Publius's father was sick at the time, down with a high fever and dysentery. Paul went to the old man's room, and when he laid hands on him and prayed, the man was healed.
AMP
9After this occurred, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases were coming to him and being healed.
MSG
9Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick came and got healed.
AMP
10They also gave us many honors ; and when we were setting sail, they supplied us with all the things we needed.
MSG
10We spent a wonderful three months on Malta. They treated us royally, took care of all our needs and outfitted us for the rest of the journey.
AMP
11At the end of three months we set sail on a ship which had wintered at the island, an Alexandrian ship with the Twin Brothers as its figurehead.
MSG
11When an Egyptian ship that had wintered there in the harbor prepared to leave for Italy, we got on board. The ship had a carved Gemini for its figurehead: "the Heavenly Twins."
AMP
12We landed at Syracuse and stayed there three days.
MSG
12We put in at Syracuse for three days
AMP
13From there we sailed around and arrived at Rhegium ; and a day later a south wind came up, and on the second day we arrived at Puteoli.
MSG
13and then went up the coast to Rhegium. Two days later, with the wind out of the south, we sailed into the Bay of Naples.
AMP
14There we found some believers and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome.
MSG
14We found Christian friends there and stayed with them for a week. And then we came to Rome.
AMP
15And the brothers and sisters, having heard news about us, came from as far away as the Forum of Appius and Three Inns to meet us. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and was encouraged.
MSG
15Friends in Rome heard we were on the way and came out to meet us. One group got as far as Appian Court; another group met us at Three Taverns—emotion-packed meetings, as you can well imagine. Paul, brimming over with praise, led us in prayers of thanksgiving.
AMP
16When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who was guarding him.
MSG
16When we actually entered Rome, they let Paul live in his own private quarters with a soldier who had been assigned to guard him.
AMP
17Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews; and when they had gathered, he said to them, "Kinsmen, though I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our fathers, yet I was turned over as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
MSG
17Three days later, Paul called the Jewish leaders together for a meeting at his house. He said, "The Jews in Jerusalem arrested me on trumped-up charges, and I was taken into custody by the Romans. I assure you that I did absolutely nothing against Jewish laws or Jewish customs.
AMP
18After they had interrogated me, they were ready to release me because I was not guilty of any offense deserving death.
MSG
18After the Romans investigated the charges and found there was nothing to them, they wanted to set me free,
AMP
19But when the Jews objected , I was forced to appeal to Caesar (Emperor Nero), not because I had any charge to make against my nation.
MSG
19but the Jews objected so fiercely that I was forced to appeal to Caesar. I did this not to accuse them of any wrongdoing or to get our people in trouble with Rome. We've had enough trouble through the years that way.
AMP
20For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you, since it is for the sake of the hope of Israel (the Messiah, the resurrection) that I am bound with this chain."
MSG
20I did it for Israel. I asked you to come and listen to me today to make it clear that I'm on Israel's side, not against her. I'm a hostage here for hope, not doom."
AMP
21They said to him, "We have not received letters about you from Judea, nor have any of the brothers come here and reported or said anything bad about you.
MSG
21They said, "Nobody wrote warning us about you. And no one has shown up saying anything bad about you.
AMP
22But we would like to hear from you what your views are ; for in regard to this sect (Christianity), we are fully aware that it is denounced everywhere."
MSG
22But we would like very much to hear more. The only thing we know about this Christian sect is that nobody seems to have anything good to say about it."
AMP
23When they had set a day for Paul, they came to his lodging in large numbers. And he carefully explained to them from morning until evening, solemnly testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.
MSG
23They agreed on a time. When the day arrived, they came back to his home with a number of their friends. Paul talked to them all day, from morning to evening, explaining everything involved in the kingdom of God, and trying to persuade them all about Jesus by pointing out what Moses and the prophets had written about him.
AMP
24Some were persuaded by what he said, but others would not believe.
MSG
24Some of them were persuaded by what he said, but others refused to believe a word of it.
AMP
25They disagreed among themselves and they began to leave after Paul had made one last statement: "The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers, saying,
MSG
25When the unbelievers got cantankerous and started bickering with each other, Paul interrupted: "I have just one more thing to say to you. The Holy Spirit sure knew what he was talking about when he addressed our ancestors through Isaiah the prophet:
AMP
26'Go to this people and say, "You will keep on hearing, but will not understand, You will keep on seeing, but will not perceive;
MSG
26Go to this people and tell them this: "You're going to listen with your ears, but you won't hear a word; You're going to stare with your eyes, but you won't see a thing.
AMP
27"For the heart (the understanding, the soul) of this people has become dull (calloused), And with their ears they scarcely hear, And they have shut their eyes ; Otherwise they might see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart and return , And I would heal them."'
MSG
27These people are blockheads! They stick their fingers in their ears so they won't have to listen; They screw their eyes shut so they won't have to look, so they won't have to deal with me face-to-face and let me heal them."
AMP
28Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they indeed will listen!"
MSG
28"You've had your chance. The non-Jewish outsiders are next on the list. And believe me, they're going to receive it with open arms!"
AMP
30And Paul lived there for two full years in his own rented lodging and welcomed all who came to him,
MSG
30Paul lived for two years in his rented house. He welcomed everyone who came to visit.
AMP
31preaching and proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness and boldness, unhindered and unrestrained.
MSG
31He urgently presented all matters of the kingdom of God. He explained everything about Jesus Christ. His door was always open.
