1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

1Then Eliphaz from Teman spoke up:
AMP
2"If we dare to converse with you, will you be impatient ? But who can restrain himself from speaking?
MSG
2"Would you mind if I said something to you?Under the circumstances it's hard to keep quiet.
AMP
3"Behold, you have admonished and instructed many, And you have strengthened weak hands.
MSG
3You yourself have done this plenty of times, spoken wordsthat clarify, encouraged those who were about to quit.
AMP
4"Your words have helped the one who was stumbling to stand, And you have strengthened feeble knees.
MSG
4Your words have put stumbling people on their feet,put fresh hope in people about to collapse.
AMP
5"But now adversity comes upon you, and you are impatient and intolerant; It touches you, and you are horrified.
MSG
5But now you're the one in trouble—you're hurting!You've been hit hard and you're reeling from the blow.
AMP
6"Is not your fear of God your confidence, And the integrity and uprightness of your ways your hope?
MSG
6But shouldn't your devout life give you confidence now?Shouldn't your exemplary life give you hope?
AMP
7"Remember now, who, being innocent, ever perished? Or where were those upright and in right standing with God destroyed?
MSG
7"Think! Has a truly innocent person ever ended up onthe scrap heap?Do genuinely upright people ever lose out in the end?
AMP
8"As I have seen, those who plow wickedness And those who sow trouble and harm harvest it.
MSG
8It's my observation that those who plow eviland sow trouble reap evil and trouble.
AMP
9"By the breath of God they perish, And by the blast of His anger they are consumed.
MSG
9One breath from God and they fall apart,one blast of his anger and there's nothing left of them.
AMP
10"The roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion, And the teeth of the young lions are broken.
MSG
10The mighty lion, king of the beasts, roars mightily,but when he's toothless he's useless—
AMP
11"The lion perishes for lack of prey, And the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
MSG
11No teeth, no prey—and the cubswander off to fend for themselves.
AMP
12"Now a word was secretly brought to me, And my ear received a whisper of it.
MSG
12"A word came to me in secret—a mere whisper of a word, but I heard it clearly.
AMP
13"Amid disquieting thoughts from the visions of the night, When deep sleep falls on men,
MSG
13It came in a scary dream one night,after I had fallen into a deep, deep sleep.
AMP
14Dread and trembling came upon me, Which made all my bones shake.
MSG
14Dread stared me in the face, and Terror.I was scared to death—I shook from head to foot.
AMP
15"Then a spirit passed before my face; The hair on my skin stood on end!
MSG
15A spirit glided right in front of me—the hair on my head stood on end.

16"The spirit stood still, but I could not discern its appearance; A form was before my eyes; There was silence, and then I heard a voice, saying:

16I couldn't tell what it was that appeared there—a blur... and then I heard a muffled voice:

17'Can man be just before God or be more righteous than He? Can a man be pure before his Maker or be more cleansed than He?
MSG
17" 'How can mere mortals be more righteous than God?How can humans be purer than their Creator?
AMP
18'God puts no trust or confidence, even in His servants, And He charges His angels with error.
MSG
18Why, God doesn't even trust his own servants,doesn't even cheer his angels,
AMP
19'How much more those who dwell in houses (bodies) of clay, Whose foundations are in the dust, Who are crushed like a moth.
MSG
19So how much less these bodies composed of mud,fragile as moths?
AMP
20'Between morning and evening they are broken in pieces and destroyed; Unobserved and unnoticed, they perish forever.
MSG
20These bodies of ours are here today and gone tomorrow,and no one even notices—gone without a trace.
AMP
21'Is not their tent-cord drawn up within them ? Do they not die, and yet without wisdom?'
MSG
21When the tent stakes are ripped up, the tent collapses—we die and are never the wiser for having lived.'
