2Pareceu-me bem fazer conhecidos os sinais e maravilhas que Deus, o Altíssimo, tem feito para comigo.

2It is my privilege to report to you the gracious miracles that the High God has done for me.

3Quão grandes são os seus sinais, e quão poderosas, as suas maravilhas! O seu reino é um reino sempiterno, e o seu domínio, de geração em geração.

3"His miracles are staggering,his wonders are surprising.His kingdom lasts and lasts,his sovereign rule goes on forever.

4Eu, Nabucodonosor, estava sossegado em minha casa e florescente no meu palácio.

4"I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home taking it easy in my palace, without a care in the world.

5Tive um sonho, que me espantou; e as imaginações na minha cama e as visões da minha cabeça me turbaram.

5But as I was stretched out on my bed I had a dream that scared me—a nightmare that shook me.

6Por mim, pois, se fez um decreto, pelo qual fossem introduzidos à minha presença todos os sábios de Babilônia, para que me fizessem saber a interpretação do sonho.

6I sent for all the wise men of Babylon so that they could interpret the dream for me.

7Então, entraram os magos, os astrólogos, os caldeus e os adivinhadores, e eu contei o sonho diante deles; mas não me fizeram saber a sua interpretação.

7When they were all assembled—magicians, enchanters, fortunetellers, witches—I told them the dream. None could tell me what it meant.

8Mas, por fim, entrou na minha presença Daniel, cujo nome é Beltessazar, segundo o nome do meu deus, e no qual há o espírito dos deuses santos; e eu contei o sonho diante dele:

8"And then Daniel came in. His Babylonian name is Belteshazzar, named after my god, a man full of the divine Holy Spirit. I told him my dream.

9Beltessazar, príncipe dos magos, eu sei que há em ti o espírito dos deuses santos, e nenhum segredo te é difícil; dize-me as visões do meu sonho que tive e a sua interpretação.

9" 'Belteshazzar,' I said, 'chief of the magicians, I know that you are a man full of the divine Holy Spirit and that there is no mystery that you can't solve. Listen to this dream that I had and interpret it for me.

10Eram assim as visões da minha cabeça, na minha cama: eu estava olhando e vi uma árvore no meio da terra, cuja altura era grande;

10" 'This is what I saw as I was stretched out on my bed. I saw a big towering tree at the center of the world.

11crescia essa árvore e se fazia forte, de maneira que a sua altura chegava até ao céu; e foi vista até aos confins da terra.

11As I watched, the tree grew huge and strong. Its top reached the sky and it could be seen from the four corners of the earth.

12A sua folhagem era formosa, e o seu fruto, abundante, e havia nela sustento para todos; debaixo dela, os animais do campo achavam sombra, e as aves do céu faziam morada nos seus ramos, e toda carne se mantinha dela.

12Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant—enough food for everyone! Wild animals found shelter under it, birds nested in its branches, everything living was fed and sheltered by it.

13Estava vendo isso nas visões da minha cabeça, na minha cama; e eis que um vigia, um santo, descia do céu,

13" 'And this also is what I saw as I was stretched out on my bed. I saw a holy watchman descend from heaven,

14clamando fortemente e dizendo assim: Derribai a árvore, e cortai-lhe os ramos, e sacudi as suas folhas, e espalhai o seu fruto; afugentem-se os animais de debaixo dela e as aves dos seus ramos.

14and call out:Chop down the tree, lop off its branches,strip its leaves and scatter its fruit.Chase the animals from beneath itand shoo the birds from its branches.

15Mas o tronco, com as suas raízes, deixai na terra e, com cadeias de ferro e de bronze, na erva do campo; e seja molhado do orvalho do céu, e a sua porção seja com os animais na grama da terra.

15But leave the stump and roots in the ground,belted with a strap of iron and bronze in the grassy meadow.Let him be soaked in heaven's dewand take his meals with the animals that graze.

16Seja mudado o seu coração, para que não seja mais coração de homem, e seja-lhe dado coração de animal; e passem sobre ele sete tempos.

17Esta sentença é por decreto dos vigiadores, e esta ordem, por mandado dos santos; a fim de que conheçam os viventes que o Altíssimo tem domínio sobre os reinos dos homens; e os dá a quem quer e até ao mais baixo dos homens constitui sobre eles.

17The angels announce this decree,the holy watchmen bring this sentence,So that everyone living will knowthat the High God rules human kingdoms.He arranges kingdom affairs however he wishes,and makes leaders out of losers.

18Isso em sonho eu, rei Nabucodonosor, vi; tu, pois, Beltessazar, dize a interpretação; todos os sábios do meu reino não puderam fazer-me saber a interpretação, mas tu podes; pois há em ti o espírito dos deuses santos.

18" 'This is what I, King Nebuchadnezzar, dreamed. It's your turn, Belteshazzar—interpret it for me. None of the wise men of Babylon could make heads or tails of it, but I'm sure you can do it. You're full of the divine Holy Spirit.' "

19Então, Daniel, cujo nome era Beltessazar, esteve atônito quase uma hora, e os seus pensamentos o turbavam; falou, pois, o rei e disse: Beltessazar, não te espante o sonho, nem a sua interpretação. Respondeu Beltessazar e disse: Senhor meu, o sonho seja contra os que te têm ódio, e a sua interpretação, para os teus inimigos.

19At first Daniel, who had been renamed Belteshazzar in Babylon, was upset. The thoughts that came swarming into his mind terrified him."Belteshazzar," the king said, "stay calm. Don't let the dream and its interpretation scare you.""My master," said Belteshazzar, "I wish this dream were about your enemies and its interpretation for your foes.

20A árvore que viste, que cresceu e se fez forte, cuja altura chegava até ao céu, e que foi vista por toda a terra;

20"The tree you saw that grew so large and sturdy with its top touching the sky, visible from the four corners of the world;

21cujas folhas eram formosas, e o seu fruto, abundante, e em que para todos havia mantimento; debaixo da qual moravam os animais do campo, e em cujos ramos habitavam as aves do céu,

21the tree with the luxuriant foliage and abundant fruit, enough for everyone; the tree under which animals took cover and in which birds built nests

22és tu, ó rei, que cresceste e te fizeste forte; a tua grandeza cresceu e chegou até ao céu, e o teu domínio, até à extremidade da terra.

22—you, O king, are that tree."You have grown great and strong. Your royal majesty reaches sky-high, and your sovereign rule stretches to the four corners of the world.

23E, quanto ao que viu o rei, um vigia, um santo, que descia do céu e que dizia: Cortai a árvore e destruí-a, mas o tronco, com as suas raízes, deixai na terra e, com cadeias de ferro e de bronze, na erva do campo; e seja molhado do orvalho do céu, e a sua porção seja com os animais do campo, até que passem sobre ele sete tempos,

23"But the part about the holy angel descending from heaven and proclaiming, 'Chop down the tree, destroy it, but leave stump and roots in the ground belted with a strap of iron and bronze in the grassy meadow; let him be soaked with heaven's dew and take his meals with the grazing animals for seven seasons'

24esta é a interpretação, ó rei; e este é o decreto do Altíssimo, que virá sobre o rei, meu senhor:

24—this, O king, also refers to you. It means that the High God has sentenced my master the king:

25serás tirado de entre os homens, e a tua morada será com os animais do campo, e te farão comer erva como os bois, e serás molhado do orvalho do céu; e passar-se-ão sete tempos por cima de ti, até que conheças que o Altíssimo tem domínio sobre o reino dos homens e o dá a quem quer.

25You will be driven away from human company and live with the wild animals. You will graze on grass like an ox. You will be soaked in heaven's dew. This will go on for seven seasons, and you will learn that the High God rules over human kingdoms and that he arranges all kingdom affairs.

26E, quanto ao que foi dito, que deixassem o tronco com as raízes da árvore, o teu reino voltará para ti, depois que tiveres conhecido que o céu reina.

26"The part about the tree stump and roots being left means that your kingdom will still be there for you after you learn that it is heaven that runs things.

27Portanto, ó rei, aceita o meu conselho e desfaze os teus pecados pela justiça e as tuas iniquidades, usando de misericórdia para com os pobres, e talvez se prolongue a tua tranquilidade.

27"So, king, take my advice: Make a clean break with your sins and start living for others. Quit your wicked life and look after the needs of the down-and-out. Then you will continue to have a good life."

28All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.

29Ao cabo de doze meses, andando a passear sobre o palácio real de Babilônia,

29Just twelve months later, he was walking on the balcony of the royal palace in Babylon

30falou o rei e disse: Não é esta a grande Babilônia que eu edifiquei para a casa real, com a força do meu poder e para glória da minha magnificência?

30and boasted, "Look at this, Babylon the great! And I built it all by myself, a royal palace adequate to display my honor and glory!"

31Ainda estava a palavra na boca do rei, quando caiu uma voz do céu: A ti se diz, ó rei Nabucodonosor: Passou de ti o reino.

31The words were no sooner out of his mouth than a voice out of heaven spoke, "This is the verdict on you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your kingdom is taken from you.

32E serás tirado dentre os homens, e a tua morada será com os animais do campo; far-te-ão comer erva como os bois, e passar-se-ão sete tempos sobre ti, até que conheças que o Altíssimo tem domínio sobre os reinos dos homens e os dá a quem quer.

32You will be driven out of human company and live with the wild animals. You will eat grass like an ox. The sentence is for seven seasons, enough time to learn that the High God rules human kingdoms and puts whomever he wishes in charge."

33Na mesma hora, se cumpriu a palavra sobre Nabucodonosor, e foi tirado dentre os homens e comia erva como os bois, e o seu corpo foi molhado do orvalho do céu, até que lhe cresceu pelo, como as penas da águia, e as suas unhas, como as das aves.

33It happened at once. Nebuchadnezzar was driven out of human company, ate grass like an ox, and was soaked in heaven's dew. His hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a hawk.

34Mas, ao fim daqueles dias, eu, Nabucodonosor, levantei os meus olhos ao céu, e tornou-me a vir o meu entendimento, e eu bendisse o Altíssimo, e louvei, e glorifiquei ao que vive para sempre, cujo domínio é um domínio sempiterno, e cujo reino é de geração em geração.

34"At the end of the seven years, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked to heaven. I was given my mind back and I blessed the High God, thanking and glorifying God, who lives forever."His sovereign rule lasts and lasts,his kingdom never declines and falls.

35E todos os moradores da terra são reputados em nada; e, segundo a sua vontade, ele opera com o exército do céu e os moradores da terra; não há quem possa estorvar a sua mão e lhe diga: Que fazes?

35Life on this earth doesn't add up to much,but God's heavenly army keeps everything going.No one can interrupt his work,no one can call his rule into question.

36No mesmo tempo, me tornou a vir o meu entendimento, e para a dignidade do meu reino tornou-me a vir a minha majestade e o meu resplendor; e me buscaram os meus capitães e os meus grandes; e fui restabelecido no meu reino, e a minha glória foi aumentada.

36"At the same time that I was given back my mind, I was also given back my majesty and splendor, making my kingdom shine. All the leaders and important people came looking for me. I was reestablished as king in my kingdom and became greater than ever.

37Agora, pois, eu, Nabucodonosor, louvo, e exalço, e glorifico ao Rei dos céus; porque todas as suas obras são verdades; e os seus caminhos, juízo, e pode humilhar aos que andam na soberba.

37And that's why I'm singing—I, Nebuchadnezzar—singing and praising the King of Heaven:"Everything he does is right,and he does it the right way.He knows how to turn a proud personinto a humble man or woman."
