1Então Agripa disse a Paulo: É permitido que faças a tua defesa. Então Paulo, estendendo a mão, começou a sua defesa:

1Agrippa spoke directly to Paul: "Go ahead—tell us about yourself." Paul took the stand and told his story.

2Julgo-me feliz, ó rei Agripa, por poder hoje defender-me perante ti de todas as coisas de que sou acusado pelos judeus,

2"I can't think of anyone, King Agrippa, before whom I'd rather be answering all these Jewish accusations than you,

3especialmente porque és versado em todos os costumes e questões que há entre os judeus. Por isso, suplico-te que me ouças com paciência.

3knowing how well you are acquainted with Jewish ways and all our family quarrels.

4Pois, desde a juventude, a minha vida é conhecida entre o meu povo e por todos os judeus em Jerusalém.

4"From the time of my youth, my life has been lived among my own people in Jerusalem.

5Eles me conhecem desde o princípio e, se quiserem, podem dar testemunho de que vivi como fariseu, segundo o mais severo grupo da nossa religião.

5Practically every Jew in town who watched me grow up—and if they were willing to stick their necks out they'd tell you in person—knows that I lived as a strict Pharisee, the most demanding branch of our religion.

6Agora estou aqui para ser julgado por causa da esperança da promessa feita por Deus a nossos pais.

6It's because I believed it and took it seriously,

7As nossas doze tribos esperam alcançar essa promessa, servindo a Deus com fervor noite e dia. É por causa dessa esperança, ó rei, que sou acusado pelos judeus.

7committed myself heart and soul to what God promised my ancestors—the identical hope, mind you, that the twelve tribes have lived for night and day all these centuries—it's because I have held on to this tested and tried hope that I'm being called on the carpet by the Jews. They should be the ones standing trial here, not me!

8Por que se considera inacreditável, entre vós, que Deus ressuscite os mortos?

8For the life of me, I can't see why it's a criminal offense to believe that God raises the dead.

9Eu pensava que devia praticar muitas coisas contra o nome de Jesus, o Nazareno;

9"I admit that I didn't always hold to this position. For a time I thought it was my duty to oppose this Jesus of Nazareth with all my might.

10o que, de fato, fiz em Jerusalém. Pois, tendo recebido autoridade dos principais sacerdotes, não somente encerrei muitos santos em prisões, como também dei o meu voto contra eles quando estavam para matá-los.

10Backed with the full authority of the high priests, I threw these believers—I had no idea they were God's people!—into the Jerusalem jail right and left, and whenever it came to a vote, I voted for their execution.

11E, castigando-os muitas vezes em todas as sinagogas, obrigava-os a blasfemar. E, cada vez mais enfurecido contra eles, perseguia-os até nas cidades estrangeiras.

11I stormed through their meeting places, bullying them into cursing Jesus, a one-man terror obsessed with obliterating these people. And then I started on the towns outside Jerusalem.

12Numa dessas vezes, fui para Damasco, munido de autoridade dos principais sacerdotes e comissionado por eles.

12"One day on my way to Damascus, armed as always with papers from the high priests authorizing my action,

13Ao meio-dia, ó rei, vi no caminho uma luz do céu, que brilhava mais do que o sol, resplandecendo em torno de mim e dos que iam comigo.

13right in the middle of the day a blaze of light, light outshining the sun, poured out of the sky on me and my companions. Oh, King, it was so bright!

14E, caindo todos nós por terra, ouvi uma voz que me dizia na língua dos hebreus: Saulo, Saulo, por que me persegues? É inútil resistires ao aguilhão.

14We fell flat on our faces. Then I heard a voice in Hebrew: 'Saul, Saul, why are you out to get me? Why do you insist on going against the grain?'

15Eu disse: Quem és, Senhor? O Senhor respondeu: Eu sou Jesus, a quem persegues.

15"I said, 'Who are you, Master?' "The voice answered, 'I am Jesus, the One you're hunting down like an animal.

16Mas levanta-te e põe-te em pé. Foi para isto que te apareci: para te fazer servo e testemunha, tanto das coisas que viste de minha parte como daquelas que te manifestarei.

16But now, up on your feet—I have a job for you. I've handpicked you to be a servant and witness to what's happened today, and to what I am going to show you.

17Eu te livrarei deste povo e dos gentios para os quais te envio,

17" 'I'm sending you off

18para lhes abrir os olhos a fim de que se convertam das trevas para a luz, e do poder de Satanás para Deus, para que recebam o perdão dos pecados e herança entre os que são santificados pela fé em mim.

18to open the eyes of the outsiders so they can see the difference between dark and light, and choose light, see the difference between Satan and God, and choose God. I'm sending you off to present my offer of sins forgiven, and a place in the family, inviting them into the company of those who begin real living by believing in me.'

19Portanto, ó rei Agripa, não fui desobediente à visão celestial.

19"What could I do, King Agrippa? I couldn't just walk away from a vision like that! I became an obedient believer on the spot.

20Pelo contrário, anunciei primeiramente aos que estão em Damasco, e depois em Jerusalém, e por toda a terra da Judeia e também aos gentios, que se arrependessem e se convertessem a Deus, praticando obras próprias de arrependimento.

20I started preaching this life-change—this radical turn to God and everything it meant in everyday life—right there in Damascus, went on to Jerusalem and the surrounding countryside, and from there to the whole world.

21Por causa disso os judeus me prenderam no templo e procuram matar-me.
MSG
21"It's because of this 'whole world' dimension that the Jews grabbed me in the Temple that day and tried to kill me. They want to keep God for themselves.
AS21
22Mas, tenho alcançado auxílio da parte de Deus e até hoje continuo testemunhando tanto a gente comum como a pessoas influentes, não dizendo nada senão o que os profetas e Moisés disseram que haveria de acontecer.

22But God has stood by me, just as he promised, and I'm standing here saying what I've been saying to anyone, whether king or child, who will listen. And everything I'm saying is completely in line with what the prophets and Moses said would happen:

23Isto é, como o Cristo deveria sofrer, e como ele seria o primeiro que, pela ressurreição dos mortos, anunciaria luz a este povo e também aos gentios.

23One, the Messiah must die; two, raised from the dead, he would be the first rays of God's daylight shining on people far and near, people both godless and God-fearing."

24Enquanto Paulo fazia desse modo a sua defesa, Festo disse em alta voz: Estás louco, Paulo! As muitas letras te levaram à loucura!

24That was too much for Festus. He interrupted with a shout: "Paul, you're crazy! You've read too many books, spent too much time staring off into space! Get a grip on yourself, get back in the real world!"

25Mas Paulo disse: Não estou louco, ó excelentíssimo Festo; pelo contrário, estou dizendo palavras verdadeiras e de perfeito juízo.

25But Paul stood his ground. "With all respect, Festus, Your Honor, I'm not crazy. I'm both accurate and sane in what I'm saying.

26Porque o rei, diante de quem falo com liberdade, sabe dessas coisas. Não creio que algo disso lhe seja desconhecido; porque essas coisas não aconteceram em algum canto, às escondidas.

26The King knows what I'm talking about. I'm sure that nothing of what I've said sounds crazy to him. He's known all about it for a long time. You must realize that this wasn't done behind the scenes.

27Crês nos profetas, ó rei Agripa? Sei que crês.
MSG
27You believe the prophets, don't you, King Agrippa? Don't answer that—I know you believe."
AS21
28Agripa disse a Paulo: Por pouco me convences a me tornar cristão.
MSG
28But Agrippa did answer: "Keep this up much longer and you'll make a Christian out of me!"
AS21
29Paulo respondeu: Quisera Deus que, por pouco ou por muito, não somente tu, mas também todos os que hoje me ouvem se tornassem iguais a mim, com exceção destas algemas.
MSG
29Paul, still in chains, said, "That's what I'm praying for, whether now or later, and not only you but everyone listening today, to become like me—except, of course, for this prison jewelry!"

30E o rei levantou-se, bem como o governador e Berenice, e os que com eles estavam sentados;

30The king and the governor, along with Bernice and their advisors, got up
AS21
31e, retirando-se, diziam uns aos outros: Este homem não fez nada digno de morte ou prisão.
MSG
31and went into the next room to talk over what they had heard. They quickly agreed on Paul's innocence, saying, "There's nothing in this man deserving prison, let alone death."

32Então Agripa disse a Festo: Este homem bem podia ser solto, se não tivesse apelado para César.
MSG
32Agrippa told Festus, "He could be set free right now if he hadn't requested the hearing before Caesar."
