1O rei Belsazar deu um grande banquete para mil dos seus nobres, e bebeu vinho na presença dos mil.

1King Belshazzar held a great feast for his one thousand nobles. The wine flowed freely.

2Quando estava bebendo o vinho, Belsazar mandou trazer as taças de ouro e de prata que Nabucodonosor, seu pai, tinha tirado do templo que estava em Jerusalém, para que o rei, seus nobres, suas mulheres e concubinas os usassem para beber.

2Belshazzar, heady with the wine, ordered that the gold and silver chalices his father Nebuchadnezzar had stolen from God's Temple of Jerusalem be brought in so that he and his nobles, his wives and concubines, could drink from them.

3Então trouxeram as taças de ouro que foram tiradas do templo de Deus, que estava em Jerusalém, e o rei, seus nobres, suas mulheres e concubinas beberam nelas.

3When the gold and silver chalices were brought in, the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines, drank wine from them.

6Então, a fisionomia do rei mudou, e seus pensamentos o perturbaram; suas pernas ficaram fracas e seus joelhos batiam um no outro.

6he went white as a ghost, scared out of his wits. His legs went limp and his knees knocked.

7O rei gritou para que trouxessem os adivinhos, os astrólogos e os prognosticadores; e o rei disse aos sábios da Babilônia: Quem ler esta inscrição e me declarar a sua interpretação será vestido de púrpura e terá um colar de ouro no pescoço, e será o terceiro governante no reino.

7He yelled out for the enchanters, the fortunetellers, and the diviners to come. He told these Babylonian magi, "Anyone who can read this writing on the wall and tell me what it means will be famous and rich—purple robe, the great gold chain—and be third-in-command in the kingdom."

8Então vieram todos os sábios do rei; mas eles não puderam ler a inscrição, nem declarar sua interpretação ao rei.

8One after the other they tried, but could make no sense of it. They could neither read what was written nor interpret it to the king.

9O rei Belsazar ficou muito perturbado com isso, e sua fisionomia mudou; e seus nobres estavam perplexos.

9So now the king was really frightened. All the blood drained from his face. The nobles were in a panic.

10Aconteceu que, por causa das palavras do rei e dos seus nobres, a rainha entrou no salão do banquete. E a rainha disse: Ó rei, vive para sempre; não te perturbem os teus pensamentos, nem se altere a tua fisionomia.

10The queen heard of the hysteria among the king and his nobles and came to the banquet hall. She said, "Long live the king! Don't be upset. Don't sit around looking like ghosts.

11Há no teu reino um homem que tem o espírito dos deuses santos; nos dias de teu pai, se achou nele luz, inteligência e sabedoria, como a sabedoria dos deuses. Teu pai, o rei Nabucodonosor; sim, ó rei, teu pai o constituiu chefe dos magos, dos adivinhos, dos astrólogos e dos prognosticadores;

11There is a man in your kingdom who is full of the divine Holy Spirit. During your father's time he was well known for his intellectual brilliance and spiritual wisdom. He was so good that your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, made him the head of all the magicians, enchanters, fortunetellers, and diviners.

12porque neste Daniel, ao qual o rei pôs o nome de Beltessazar, se encontrou um espírito extraordinário, conhecimento e entendimento para interpretar sonhos, explicar enigmas e resolver dúvidas. Chame-se agora Daniel, e ele dará a interpretação.

12There was no one quite like him. He could do anything—interpret dreams, solve mysteries, explain puzzles. His name is Daniel, but he was renamed Belteshazzar by the king. Have Daniel called in. He'll tell you what is going on here."

13Então Daniel foi levado à presença do rei. O rei disse a Daniel: És tu aquele Daniel, um dos cativos de Judá, que o rei, meu pai, trouxe de Judá?

13So Daniel was called in. The king asked him, "Are you the Daniel who was one of the Jewish exiles my father brought here from Judah?

14Ouvi dizer a teu respeito que o espírito dos deuses está em ti, e que em ti se acham a luz, o entendimento e a excelente sabedoria.

14I've heard about you—that you're full of the Holy Spirit, that you've got a brilliant mind, that you are incredibly wise.

15Os sábios e os adivinhos acabaram de ser trazidos à minha presença para lerem a inscrição e me revelarem a sua interpretação; mas não puderam dar a interpretação destas palavras.

15The wise men and enchanters were brought in here to read this writing on the wall and interpret it for me. They couldn't figure it out—not a word, not a syllable.

16Porém ouvi dizer a teu respeito que podes dar interpretações e resolver enigmas. Agora, se puderes ler esta inscrição e me revelar a sua interpretação, serás vestido de púrpura, terás um colar de ouro no pescoço e serás o terceiro governante no reino.

16But I've heard that you interpret dreams and solve mysteries. So—if you can read the writing and interpret it for me, you'll be rich and famous—a purple robe, the great gold chain around your neck—and third-in-command in the kingdom."

17Então Daniel respondeu, e disse na presença do rei: Os teus presentes fiquem contigo, e dá os teus prêmios a outro; porém vou ler ao rei a inscrição e lhe revelarei a interpretação.

17Daniel answered the king, "You can keep your gifts, or give them to someone else. But I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.

18Ó rei, o Deus Altíssimo deu o reino e a grandeza, glória e majestade a Nabucodonosor, teu pai;

18"Listen, O king! The High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar a great kingdom and a glorious reputation.

19e por causa da grandeza que lhe deu, todos os povos, nações e línguas tremiam e temiam diante dele; ele matava ou poupava a vida de quem queria; exaltava ou abatia a quem queria.

19Because God made him so famous, people from everywhere, whatever their race, color, and creed, were totally intimidated by him. He killed or spared people on whim. He promoted or humiliated people capriciously.

20Mas, quando seu coração se exaltou e seu espírito se endureceu para agir arrogantemente, foi derrubado do seu trono real, e a sua glória lhe foi tirada.

20He developed a big head and a hard spirit. Then God knocked him off his high horse and stripped him of his fame.

21Ele foi expulso do meio dos homens, e o seu coração foi feito semelhante ao dos animais, e a sua morada foi com os jumentos selvagens; deram-lhe grama a comer como aos bois, e o seu corpo foi molhado pelo orvalho do céu, até que reconheceu que o Altíssimo Deus tem domínio sobre o reino dos homens e constitui sobre ele a quem quer.

21He was thrown out of human company, lost his mind, and lived like a wild animal. He ate grass like an ox and was soaked by heaven's dew until he learned his lesson: that the High God rules human kingdoms and puts anyone he wants in charge.

22Mas tu, Belsazar, que és seu filho, não humilhaste o teu coração, embora soubesses de tudo isso;

22"You are his son and have known all this, yet you're as arrogant as he ever was.

23mas te elevaste contra o Senhor do céu, pois as taças do templo dele foram trazidas à tua presença, e tu, teus nobres, tuas mulheres e tuas concubinas bebestes vinho neles. Além disso, deste louvores aos deuses de prata, de ouro, de bronze, de ferro, de madeira e de pedra, que não veem, não ouvem, nem sabem; mas não glorificaste a Deus, em cuja mão está tua vida e de quem são todos os teus caminhos.

23Look at you, setting yourself up in competition against the Master of heaven! You had the sacred chalices from his Temple brought into your drunken party so that you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines, could drink from them. You used the sacred chalices to toast your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone—blind, deaf, and imbecile gods. But you treat with contempt the living God who holds your entire life from birth to death in his hand.

24Então aquela parte da mão que traçou o escrito foi enviada por ele.

27"Teqel: You have been weighed on the scales and you don't weigh much.

28Peres: O teu reino está dividido e entregue aos medos e persas.

28"Peres: Your kingdom has been divided up and handed over to the Medes and Persians."

29Então Belsazar deu ordem, e vestiram Daniel de púrpura, puseram-lhe um colar de ouro ao pescoço e anunciaram que ele seria o terceiro em autoridade no reino.

29Belshazzar did what he had promised. He robed Daniel in purple, draped the great gold chain around his neck, and promoted him to third-in-charge in the kingdom.

30Naquela mesma noite foi morto Belsazar, o rei dos babilônios.

30That same night the Babylonian king Belshazzar was murdered.

31E Dario, o medo, recebeu o reino, tendo cerca de sessenta e dois anos de idade.

31He was sixty-two years old. Darius the Mede succeeded him as king.
