1No décimo terceiro dia do décimo segundo mês, o mês de adar, quando a ordem do rei e o seu decreto entrariam em vigor, e os inimigos dos judeus esperavam vencê-los, aconteceu o contrário: os judeus venceram os que os odiavam.

1On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, the king's order came into effect. This was the very day that the enemies of the Jews had planned to overpower them, but the tables were now turned: the Jews overpowered those who hated them!

2Os judeus se ajuntaram nas suas cidades, em todas as províncias do rei Xerxes, para erguer a mão contra aqueles que procuravam a sua destruição. E ninguém conseguia resistir-lhes, pois todos os povos tinham medo deles.

2The Jews had gathered in the cities throughout King Xerxes' provinces to lay hands on those who were seeking their ruin. Not one man was able to stand up against them—fear made cowards of them all.

3E todos os príncipes das províncias, os sátrapas, os governadores e os administradores dos negócios do rei ajudavam os judeus, porque o medo que tinham de Mardoqueu tinha-se apossado deles.

3What's more, all the government officials, satraps, governors—everyone who worked for the king—actually helped the Jews because of Mordecai; they were afraid of him.

4Mardoqueu tinha grande influência no palácio real; a sua fama se espalhou por todas as províncias, e ele foi se tornando cada vez mais poderoso.

4Mordecai by now was a power in the palace. As Mordecai became more and more powerful, his reputation had grown in all the provinces.

5So the Jews finished off all their enemies with the sword, slaughtering them right and left, and did as they pleased to those who hated them.

11Naquele mesmo dia, veio ao conhecimento do rei o número dos mortos na cidadela de Susã.

11That day, when it was all over, the number of those killed in the palace complex was given to the king.

12E o rei disse à rainha Ester: Os judeus mataram e eliminaram quinhentos homens e os dez filhos de Hamã na cidadela de Susã. Que terão feito nas demais províncias do rei? Agora, qual é a tua petição? Serás atendida. Qual é o teu desejo? Ele te será concedido.

12The king told Queen Esther, "In the palace complex alone here in Susa the Jews have killed five hundred men, plus Haman's ten sons. Think of the killing that must have been done in the rest of the provinces! What else do you want? Name it and it's yours. Your wish is my command."

13Ester respondeu: Se for do agrado do rei, que os judeus de Susã tenham permissão para fazer também amanhã conforme o decreto de hoje, e que os dez filhos de Hamã sejam pendurados na forca.

13"If it please the king," Queen Esther responded, "give the Jews of Susa permission to extend the terms of the order another day. And have the bodies of Haman's ten sons hanged in public display on the gallows."

14Então o rei ordenou que assim se fizesse. Foi publicado um edito em Susã, e os dez filhos de Hamã foram pendurados na forca.

14The king commanded it: The order was extended; the bodies of Haman's ten sons were publicly hanged.

15Os judeus de Susã ajuntaram-se também no décimo quarto dia do mês de adar, e mataram trezentos homens em Susã. Mas não colocaram as mãos nos bens deles.

15The Jews in Susa went at it again. On the fourteenth day of Adar they killed another three hundred men in Susa. But again they took no plunder.

16Da mesma forma, os outros judeus nas províncias do rei se reuniram para se defender e se livrar dos seus inimigos. E mataram setenta e cinco mil dos que os odiavam, mas não colocaram a mão nos seus bens.

16Meanwhile in the rest of the king's provinces, the Jews had organized and defended themselves, freeing themselves from oppression. On the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, they killed 75,000 of those who hated them but did not take any plunder.

17Isso aconteceu no décimo terceiro dia do mês de adar, e no décimo quarto descansaram e fizeram dele um dia de banquetes e de alegria.

17The next day, the fourteenth, they took it easy and celebrated with much food and laughter.

18Mas os judeus que estavam em Susã se ajuntaram no décimo terceiro e no décimo quarto dias e descansaram no décimo quinto dia fazendo dele um dia de banquetes e de alegria.

18But in Susa, since the Jews had banded together on both the thirteenth and fourteenth days, they made the fifteenth their holiday for laughing and feasting.

19Por isso, os judeus que vivem nas vilas e povoados fazem do décimo quarto dia do mês de adar um dia de alegria, de banquetes e de festas, em que mandam presentes uns aos outros.

19(This accounts for why Jews living out in the country in the rural villages remember the fourteenth day of Adar for celebration, their day for parties and the exchange of gifts.)

20Mardoqueu escreveu essas coisas e enviou cartas a todos os judeus de todas as províncias do rei Xerxes, tanto as próximas como as distantes,

20Mordecai wrote all this down and sent copies to all the Jews in all King Xerxes' provinces, regardless of distance,

22como os dias em que os judeus se livraram dos seus inimigos, e o mês em que a tristeza foi transformada em alegria, e o pranto em dia de festa. Deveriam comemorá-los como dias de banquetes e de alegria, em que mandariam presentes uns aos outros e dariam ofertas aos pobres.

22as the occasion when Jews got relief from their enemies, the month in which their sorrow turned to joy, mourning somersaulted into a holiday for parties and fun and laughter, the sending and receiving of presents and of giving gifts to the poor.

23E os judeus se comprometeram a continuar fazendo o que tinham começado e de acordo com o que Mardoqueu lhes tinha ordenado por escrito.

23And they did it. What started then became a tradition, continuing the practice of what Mordecai had written to them.

24Pois Hamã, filho de Hamedata, descendente de Agague, o inimigo de todos os judeus, tinha tramado eliminar os judeus e tinha lançado o pur, isto é, a sorte, para os aniquilar e eliminar.

24Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the archenemy of all Jews, had schemed to destroy all Jews. He had cast the pur (the lot) to throw them into a panic and destroy them.

25Mas, quando tomou conhecimento disso, o rei ordenou por escrito que o plano perverso de Hamã contra os judeus recaísse sobre sua própria cabeça, e que ele e seus filhos fossem pendurados na forca.

25But when Queen Esther intervened with the king, he gave written orders that the evil scheme that Haman had worked out should boomerang back on his own head. He and his sons were hanged on the gallows.

26Por isso, aqueles dias foram chamados Purim, segundo a palavra pur. Portanto, por causa de tudo o que estava escrito naquela carta, do que tinham visto e do que lhes havia acontecido,

26That's why these days are called "Purim," from the word pur or "lot."Therefore, because of everything written in this letter and because of all that they had been through,

27os judeus concordaram e se comprometeram, por si, por sua descendência e por todos os que se tornassem judeus, a não deixarem de guardar esses dois dias todos os anos, na forma prescrita e na data certa.

27the Jews agreed to continue. It became a tradition for them, their children, and all future converts to remember these two days every year on the specified dates set down in the letter.

28Esses dias seriam lembrados e guardados em cada família, em cada geração, em todas as províncias e cidades. Esses dias de Purim não seriam revogados entre os judeus, e os seus descendentes jamais se esqueceriam deles.

28These days are to be remembered and kept by every single generation, every last family, every province and city. These days of Purim must never be neglected among the Jews; the memory of them must never die out among their descendants.

29Então a rainha Ester, filha de Abiail, e o judeu Mardoqueu confirmaram por escrito esta segunda carta a respeito de Purim, com toda a autoridade.

30to endorse and ratify what he wrote. Calming and reassuring letters went out to all the Jews throughout the 127 provinces of Xerxes' kingdom

31e confirmando esses dias de Purim nas suas datas determinadas, conforme o judeu Mardoqueu e a rainha Ester lhes tinham ordenado, e conforme o que eles mesmos tinham estabelecido para si e para seus descendentes, acrescentando ainda orientações a respeito de tempos de jejum e de lamentação.

31to fix these days of Purim their assigned place on the calendar, dates set by Mordecai the Jew—what they had agreed to for themselves and their descendants regarding their fasting and mourning.

32Esther's word confirmed the tradition of Purim and was written in the book.
