1Sarai, mulher de Abrão, não lhe dava filhos. Tendo uma serva egípcia, que se chamava Agar,

1Sarai, Abram's wife, hadn't yet produced a child.She had an Egyptian maid named Hagar.

2disse Sarai a Abrão: O SENHOR me tem impedido de ter filhos; una-se à minha serva; pode ser que eu venha a ter filhos por meio dela. E Abrão deu ouvidos à palavra de Sarai.

2Sarai said to Abram, "God has not seen fit to let me have a child. Sleep with my maid. Maybe I can get a family from her." Abram agreed to do what Sarai said.

3Então Sarai, mulher de Abrão, tomou Agar a egípcia, sua serva, e a deu por mulher a Abrão, seu marido, depois de Abrão ter habitado dez anos na terra de Canaã.

3So Sarai, Abram's wife, took her Egyptian maid Hagar and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife. Abram had been living ten years in Canaan when this took place.

4E ele conheceu intimamente Agar, que engravidou. Ela, então, vendo que estava grávida, passou a olhar com desprezo sua senhora.

4He slept with Hagar and she got pregnant. When she learned she was pregnant, she looked down on her mistress.

5Então Sarai disse a Abrão: Seja sobre ti a afronta que me é dirigida; coloquei a minha serva em teus braços, mas, vendo ela agora que está grávida, passou a olhar-me com desprezo; o SENHOR julgue entre mim e ti.

5Sarai told Abram, "It's all your fault that I'm suffering this abuse. I put my maid in bed with you and the minute she knows she's pregnant, she treats me like I'm nothing. May God decide which of us is right."

6Abrão respondeu a Sarai: A tua serva está em tuas mãos; faze-lhe como bem te parecer. Sarai maltratou-a, e Agar fugiu de sua presença.

6"You decide," said Abram. "Your maid is your business."Sarai was abusive to Hagar and she ran away.

7Então o anjo do SENHOR, encontrando-a junto a uma fonte no deserto, a fonte que está no caminho de Sur,

7An angel of God found her beside a spring in the desert; it was the spring on the road to Shur.

8perguntou-lhe: Agar, serva de Sarai, de onde vieste e aonde vais? Respondeu ela: Estou fugindo da presença de Sarai, minha senhora.

8He said, "Hagar, maid of Sarai, what are you doing here?"She said, "I'm running away from Sarai my mistress."

9Disse-lhe o anjo do SENHOR: Volta para a tua senhora e humilha-te sob as mãos dela.

9The angel of God said, "Go back to your mistress. Put up with her abuse."

10E o anjo do SENHOR acrescentou: Multiplicarei tanto a tua descendência, de modo que, de tão numerosa, não poderá ser contada.

10He continued, "I'm going to give you a big family, children past counting.

11E o anjo do SENHOR disse-lhe ainda: Estás grávida e terás um filho, a quem chamarás Ismael, pois o SENHOR ouviu tua aflição.

11From this pregnancy, you'll get a son: Name him Ishmael;for God heard you, God answered you.

12Ele será como um jumento selvagem entre os homens; a sua mão será contra todos, e a mão de todos, contra ele; e habitará na presença de todos os seus irmãos.

12He'll be a bucking bronco of a man,a real fighter, fighting and being fought,Always stirring up trouble,always at odds with his family."

13E o nome do SENHOR, que com ela falava, ela chamou El-Roi; pois disse: Não vi eu neste lugar aquele que me vê?

13She answered God by name, praying to the God who spoke to her,"You're the God who sees me!""Yes! He saw me; and then I saw him!"

14Por isso aquele poço, que está entre Cades e Berede, foi chamado Beer-Laai-Roi.

14That's how that desert spring got named "God-Alive-Sees-Me Spring." That spring is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.

15E Agar deu um filho a Abrão, e ele chamou de Ismael o filho que tivera com Agar.

15Hagar gave Abram a son. Abram named him Ishmael.

16Abrão tinha oitenta e seis anos, quando Agar lhe deu Ismael.

16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar gave him his son, Ishmael.
