1Jacó também seguiu o seu caminho; e anjos de Deus o encontraram.

1And Jacob went his way. Angels of God met him.

2Quando Jacó os viu, disse: Este é o exército de Deus. E deu àquele lugar o nome de Maanaim.

2When Jacob saw them he said, "Oh! God's Camp!" And he named the place Mahanaim (Campground).

3Então Jacó enviou mensageiros à frente, a seu irmão Esaú, à terra de Seir, o território de Edom,

3Then Jacob sent messengers on ahead to his brother Esau in the land of Seir in Edom.

4e ordenou-lhes: Falareis a meu senhor Esaú deste modo: Assim diz Jacó, teu servo: Morei com Labão como peregrino e fiquei com ele até agora;

4He instructed them: "Tell my master Esau this, 'A message from your servant Jacob: I've been staying with Laban and couldn't get away until now.

5tenho bois e jumentos, ovelhas, servos e servas; e mando comunicar isso a meu senhor, para achar favor aos teus olhos.

5I've acquired cattle and donkeys and sheep; also men and women servants. I'm telling you all this, my master, hoping for your approval.' "

6Depois disso, os mensageiros voltaram a Jacó, dizendo: Fomos ao encontro de teu irmão Esaú; na verdade, ele está vindo para encontrar-te, acompanhado de quatrocentos homens.

6The messengers came back to Jacob and said, "We talked to your brother Esau and he's on his way to meet you. But he has four hundred men with him."

7Jacó teve muito medo e ficou aflito; dividiu em dois grupos as pessoas que estavam com ele, bem como as ovelhas, os bois e os camelos;
MSG
7Jacob was scared. Very scared. Panicked, he divided his people, sheep, cattle, and camels into two camps.

8pois dizia: Se Esaú vier a um grupo e feri-lo de morte, o outro escapará.
MSG
8He thought, "If Esau comes on the first camp and attacks it, the other camp has a chance to get away."

9E Jacó orou: Ó Deus de meu pai Abraão, Deus de meu pai Isaque, ó SENHOR, que me disseste: Volta para a tua terra e para os teus parentes, e eu te farei bem!

9And then Jacob prayed, "God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, God who told me, 'Go back to your parents' homeland and I'll treat you well.'

10Não sou digno da menor de todas as tuas misericórdias e de toda a fidelidade que tens usado para com teu servo; porque passei este Jordão apenas com o meu cajado, e agora volto em dois grupos.

10I don't deserve all the love and loyalty you've shown me. When I left here and crossed the Jordan I only had the clothes on my back, and now look at me—two camps!

11Peço-te que me livres da mão de meu irmão Esaú, pois tenho medo dele. Não permitas que ele venha matar a mim e às mães com seus filhos.

11Save me, please, from the violence of my brother, my angry brother! I'm afraid he'll come and attack us all, me, the mothers and the children.

12Pois tu mesmo disseste: Certamente te farei bem, e farei a tua descendência como a areia do mar, que de tão grande não se poderá contar.

12You yourself said, 'I will treat you well; I'll make your descendants like the sands of the sea, far too many to count.' "

13Ele passou ali aquela noite e separou do que tinha um presente para seu irmão Esaú:

13He slept the night there. Then he prepared a present for his brother Esau from his possessions:

14duzentas cabras e vinte bodes, duzentas ovelhas e vinte carneiros,

14two hundred female goats, twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

15trinta camelas de leite com suas crias, quarenta vacas e dez touros, vinte jumentas e dez jumentinhos.

15thirty camels with their nursing young, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

16Então os entregou aos seus servos, cada manada em separado; e disse-lhes: Ide à minha frente e abri espaço entre uma manada e outra.

16He put a servant in charge of each herd and said, "Go ahead of me and keep a healthy space between each herd."

17E ordenou ao primeiro: Quando meu irmão Esaú te encontrar e te perguntar: De quem és, e para onde vais, e de quem são estes diante de ti?
MSG
17Then he instructed the first one out: "When my brother Esau comes close and asks, 'Who is your master? Where are you going? Who owns these?'

18Responderás: São de teu servo Jacó; é um presente para meu senhor, para Esaú; ele também está vindo depois de nós.
MSG
18—answer him like this, 'Your servant Jacob. They are a gift to my master Esau. He's on his way.' "

19Ordenou igualmente ao segundo, ao terceiro e a todos os que vinham atrás das manadas: Assim falareis a Esaú quando o encontrardes.
MSG
19He gave the same instructions to the second servant and to the third—to each in turn as they set out with their herds:

20E direis também: O teu servo Jacó vem depois de nós. Porque dizia: Vou aplacá-lo com o presente mandado à minha frente; depois o verei face a face; talvez ele me aceite.
MSG
20"Say 'Your servant Jacob is on his way behind us.' " He thought, "I will soften him up with the succession of gifts. Then when he sees me face-to-face, maybe he'll be glad to welcome me."

21O presente foi à sua frente; mas ele passou a noite no acampamento.
MSG
21So his gifts went before him while he settled down for the night in the camp.
AS21
22Naquela mesma noite, ele se levantou e, tomando suas duas mulheres, suas duas servas e seus onze filhos, atravessou o vau de Jaboque.
MSG
22But during the night he got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven children and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
AS21
23Tomou-os, fez com que atravessassem o ribeiro e fez passar tudo o que tinha.
MSG
23He got them safely across the brook along with all his possessions.
AS21
24Porém Jacó ficou sozinho. E um homem pôs-se a lutar com ele até o romper do dia.
MSG
24But Jacob stayed behind by himself, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.
AS21
25E quando viu que não prevalecia contra ele, tocou a junta da coxa de Jacó, e esta se deslocou enquanto lutava com ele.
MSG
25When the man saw that he couldn't get the best of Jacob as they wrestled, he deliberately threw Jacob's hip out of joint.
AS21
26Disse o homem: Deixa-me ir, porque o dia já vem rompendo. Porém Jacó respondeu: Não te deixarei ir se não me abençoares.
MSG
26The man said, "Let me go; it's daybreak."Jacob said, "I'm not letting you go 'til you bless me."

27E ele lhe perguntou: Qual é o teu nome? E ele respondeu: Jacó.
MSG
27The man said, "What's your name?"He answered, "Jacob."
AS21
28Então disse: Não te chamarás mais Jacó, mas Israel; porque lutaste com Deus e com os homens e prevaleceste.
MSG
28The man said, "But no longer. Your name is no longer Jacob. From now on it's Israel (God-Wrestler); you've wrestled with God and you've come through."

29Perguntou-lhe Jacó: Peço-te que me digas o teu nome. O homem respondeu: Por que perguntas o meu nome? E ali o abençoou.

29Jacob asked, "And what's your name?"The man said, "Why do you want to know my name?" And then, right then and there, he blessed him.

30Por isso Jacó deu ao lugar o nome de Peniel, dizendo: De fato vi Deus face a face, e a minha vida foi preservada.
MSG
30Jacob named the place Peniel (God's Face) because, he said, "I saw God face-to-face and lived to tell the story!"

31E o sol nascia quando ele atravessou Peniel; e mancava de uma perna.
MSG
31The sun came up as he left Peniel, limping because of his hip.
AS21
32Por isso os israelitas não comem até o dia de hoje o nervo do quadril, sobre a junta da coxa, porque o homem tocou a junta da coxa de Jacó no nervo do quadril.

32(This is why Israelites to this day don't eat the hip muscle; because Jacob's hip was thrown out of joint.)
