1Havia um homem na terra de Uz, e seu nome era Jó. Ele era um homem íntegro e correto, que temia a Deus e se desviava do mal.

1Job was a man who lived in Uz. He was honest inside and out, a man of his word, who was totally devoted to God and hated evil with a passion.

2Jó teve sete filhos e três filhas.

2He had seven sons and three daughters.

3Possuía sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, quinhentas juntas de bois e quinhentas jumentas. Tinha também muitos servos que trabalhavam para ele, de modo que era o homem mais rico de todos do oriente.

3He was also very wealthy—seven thousand head of sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred teams of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and a huge staff of servants—the most influential man in all the East!

4Seus filhos visitavam uns aos outros, e cada vez um deles fazia um banquete e mandava convidar suas três irmãs para comerem e beberem com eles.

4His sons used to take turns hosting parties in their homes, always inviting their three sisters to join them in their merrymaking.

5Passado o período dos banquetes, Jó os chamava para os santificar. Levantava-se de madrugada e oferecia sacrifícios de acordo com o número de todos eles; pois Jó pensava: Talvez meus filhos tenham pecado e blasfemado contra Deus no coração. E era assim que Jó sempre procedia.

5When the parties were over, Job would get up early in the morning and sacrifice a burnt offering for each of his children, thinking, "Maybe one of them sinned by defying God inwardly." Job made a habit of this sacrificial atonement, just in case they'd sinned.

6Certo dia, os filhos de Deus vieram apresentar-se diante do SENHOR, e Satanás também veio com eles.

6One day when the angels came to report to God, Satan, who was the Designated Accuser, came along with them.

7O SENHOR perguntou a Satanás: De onde vens? Satanás respondeu ao SENHOR: De rodear a terra e de passear por ela.

7God singled out Satan and said, "What have you been up to?"Satan answered God, "Going here and there, checking things out on earth."

8O SENHOR disse a Satanás: Observaste o meu servo Jó? Na terra não há ninguém como ele. É um homem íntegro e correto, que teme a Deus e se desvia do mal.

8God said to Satan, "Have you noticed my friend Job? There's no one quite like him—honest and true to his word, totally devoted to God and hating evil."

9Então Satanás respondeu ao SENHOR: Será que Jó teme a Deus sem intenções?
MSG
9Satan retorted, "So do you think Job does all that out of the sheer goodness of his heart?
AS21
10Por acaso tu não o tens protegido de todos os modos, a ele, sua família e tudo que ele tem? Tu tens abençoado a obra de suas mãos, e os seus bens se multiplicam sobre a terra.

10Why, no one ever had it so good! You pamper him like a pet, make sure nothing bad ever happens to him or his family or his possessions, bless everything he does—he can't lose!

11Mas estende a mão agora e toca em tudo que ele tem, e ele blasfemará contra ti na tua face!

11"But what do you think would happen if you reached down and took away everything that is his? He'd curse you right to your face, that's what."

12Então o SENHOR respondeu a Satanás: Tudo o que ele tem está sob teu poder, apenas não estendas a tua mão contra ele. E Satanás saiu da presença do SENHOR.

12God replied, "We'll see. Go ahead—do what you want with all that is his. Just don't hurt him." Then Satan left the presence of God.

13Certo dia, quando os filhos e filhas de Jó comiam e bebiam vinho na casa do irmão mais velho,

13Sometime later, while Job's children were having one of their parties at the home of the oldest son,

14um mensageiro foi até Jó e lhe disse: Os bois estavam lavrando e as jumentas pastavam perto deles;

14a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys grazing in the field next to us

15então os sabeus os atacaram e os levaram. Eles ainda mataram os servos ao fio da espada, e só eu escapei para trazer-te essa notícia.
MSG
15when Sabeans attacked. They stole the animals and killed the field hands. I'm the only one to get out alive and tell you what happened."

16Enquanto o mensageiro ainda falava, veio outro e disse: Fogo de Deus caiu do céu, queimou as ovelhas e os servos e os consumiu; só eu escapei para trazer-te essa notícia.

16While he was still talking, another messenger arrived and said, "Bolts of lightning struck the sheep and the shepherds and fried them—burned them to a crisp. I'm the only one to get out alive and tell you what happened."

17Enquanto ele ainda falava, veio outro e disse: Os caldeus dividiram-se em três grupos, atacaram os camelos e os levaram, e ainda mataram os servos ao fio da espada; só eu escapei para trazer-te essa notícia.

17While he was still talking, another messenger arrived and said, "Chaldeans coming from three directions raided the camels and massacred the camel drivers. I'm the only one to get out alive and tell you what happened."

18Enquanto ele ainda falava, veio outro e disse: Teus filhos e tuas filhas estavam comendo e bebendo vinho na casa do irmão mais velho;

18While he was still talking, another messenger arrived and said, "Your children were having a party at the home of the oldest brother
AS21
19veio um forte vento do deserto, atingiu os quatro cantos da casa, que caiu sobre os jovens, e eles morreram. Só eu escapei para trazer-te essa notícia.
MSG
19when a tornado swept in off the desert and struck the house. It collapsed on the young people and they died. I'm the only one to get out alive and tell you what happened."

20Então Jó se levantou, rasgou o manto, rapou a cabeça, prostrou-se no chão, adorou

20Job got to his feet, ripped his robe, shaved his head, then fell to the ground and worshiped:

21e orou: Eu saí nu do ventre de minha mãe, e nu voltarei para lá. O SENHOR o deu, e o SENHOR o tirou; bendito seja o nome do SENHOR.
MSG
21Naked I came from my mother's womb,naked I'll return to the womb of the earth.God gives, God takes.God's name be ever blessed.

22Em tudo isso Jó não pecou, nem culpou a Deus por coisa alguma.
MSG
22Not once through all this did Job sin; not once did he blame God.
