1Tendo dito isso, Jesus saiu com seus discípulos para o outro lado do ribeiro de Cedrom, onde havia um jardim, e entrou ali com eles.

1Jesus, having prayed this prayer, left with his disciples and crossed over the brook Kidron at a place where there was a garden. He and his disciples entered it.

2Judas, o traidor, também conhecia o lugar, pois Jesus havia se reunido ali com os discípulos muitas vezes.

2Judas, his betrayer, knew the place because Jesus and his disciples went there often.

3Então, Judas trouxe consigo um destacamento de soldados e alguns guardas da parte dos principais sacerdotes e fariseus; e chegou ali com tochas, lanternas e armas.

3So Judas led the way to the garden, and the Roman soldiers and police sent by the high priests and Pharisees followed. They arrived there with lanterns and torches and swords.

4Sabendo Jesus tudo o que estava para lhe acontecer, adiantou-se e perguntou: A quem procurais?

4Jesus, knowing by now everything that was coming down on him, went out and met them. He said, "Who are you after?" They answered, "Jesus the Nazarene."

5Eles responderam: A Jesus, o Nazareno. Jesus lhes disse: Sou eu. E Judas, o traidor, também estava com eles.

5He said, "That's me." The soldiers recoiled, totally taken aback. Judas, his betrayer, stood out like a sore thumb.

6Quando Jesus lhes disse: Sou eu, afastaram-se e caíram por terra.

7Então Jesus lhes perguntou mais uma vez: A quem procurais? Eles responderam: A Jesus, o Nazareno.

7Jesus asked again, "Who are you after?" They answered, "Jesus the Nazarene."

8Jesus lhes respondeu: Já vos disse que sou eu; se é a mim que procurais, deixai estes ir embora;

8"I told you," said Jesus, "that's me. I'm the one. So if it's me you're after, let these others go."

9para que se cumprisse a palavra que dissera: Não perdi nenhum dos que me deste.

9(This validated the words in his prayer, "I didn't lose one of those you gave.")

10Então Simão Pedro desembainhou uma espada que trazia e feriu o servo do sumo sacerdote, cortando-lhe a orelha direita. O nome do servo era Malco.

10Just then Simon Peter, who was carrying a sword, pulled it from its sheath and struck the Chief Priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. Malchus was the servant's name.

11Mas Jesus disse a Pedro: Põe a tua espada na bainha. Por acaso não beberei do cálice que o Pai me deu?

11Jesus ordered Peter, "Put back your sword. Do you think for a minute I'm not going to drink this cup the Father gave me?"

12Então o destacamento, o comandante e os guardas dos judeus prenderam Jesus e o amarraram.

12Then the Roman soldiers under their commander, joined by the Jewish police, seized Jesus and tied him up.

13E conduziram-no primeiramente a Anás, pois ele era sogro de Caifás, sumo sacerdote naquele ano.

13They took him first to Annas, father-in-law of Caiaphas. Caiaphas was the Chief Priest that year.

14Caifás havia aconselhado os judeus, dizendo ser melhor que um homem morresse pelo povo.

14It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was to their advantage that one man die for the people.

15Simão Pedro e outro discípulo seguiam Jesus. Este discípulo era conhecido do sumo sacerdote, e por isso entrou com Jesus no pátio do sumo sacerdote,

15Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. That other disciple was known to the Chief Priest, and so he went in with Jesus to the Chief Priest's courtyard.

16mas Pedro ficou à porta, do lado de fora. Então, o outro discípulo conhecido do sumo sacerdote saiu, falou à criada que cuidava da porta e levou Pedro para dentro.

16Peter had to stay outside. Then the other disciple went out, spoke to the doorkeeper, and got Peter in.

17Então a criada que cuidava da porta perguntou a Pedro: Tu também não és um dos discípulos deste homem? Ele respondeu: Não sou.

17The young woman who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, "Aren't you one of this man's disciples?" He said, "No, I'm not."

18Estavam ali os servos e os guardas, os quais haviam acendido uma fogueira e se aqueciam, pois fazia frio. Pedro também estava ali em pé no meio deles, esquentando-se.

18The servants and police had made a fire because of the cold and were huddled there warming themselves. Peter stood with them, trying to get warm.

19Então o sumo sacerdote passou a interrogar Jesus acerca dos seus discípulos e de seu ensino.

19Annas interrogated Jesus regarding his disciples and his teaching.

20Jesus lhe respondeu: Eu falei abertamente ao mundo; sempre ensinei nas sinagogas e no templo, onde todos os judeus se congregam. Nada falei em oculto.

20Jesus answered, "I've spoken openly in public. I've taught regularly in meeting places and the Temple, where the Jews all come together. Everything has been out in the open. I've said nothing in secret.

21Por que me interrogas? Pergunta aos que me ouviram o que lhes falei. Eles sabem o que eu disse.

21So why are you treating me like a conspirator? Question those who have been listening to me. They know well what I have said. My teachings have all been aboveboard."

22Tendo dito isso, um dos guardas que ali estavam deu uma bofetada em Jesus, dizendo: É assim que respondes ao sumo sacerdote?

22When he said this, one of the policemen standing there slapped Jesus across the face, saying, "How dare you speak to the Chief Priest like that!"

23Jesus lhe respondeu: Se falei mal, mostra esse mal; mas se falei o que é correto, por que me agrides?
MSG
23Jesus replied, "If I've said something wrong, prove it. But if I've spoken the plain truth, why this slapping around?"

24Então Anás enviou-o amarrado a Caifás, o sumo sacerdote.

24Then Annas sent him, still tied up, to the Chief Priest Caiaphas.

25Simão Pedro ainda estava ali, esquentando-se. Perguntaram-lhe, então: Tu também não és um dos seus discípulos? Mas ele negou, dizendo: Não sou.

25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was back at the fire, still trying to get warm. The others there said to him, "Aren't you one of his disciples?" He denied it, "Not me."

26Um dos servos do sumo sacerdote, parente daquele a quem Pedro cortara a orelha, disse: Acaso não te vi com ele no jardim?

26One of the Chief Priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"

27Pedro negou outra vez, e imediatamente um galo cantou.
MSG
27Again, Peter denied it. Just then a rooster crowed.

28Depois levaram Jesus da presença de Caifás para o palácio do governador. Era de manhã cedo, e eles não entraram, para não ficarem cerimonialmente impuros e poderem comer a refeição da Páscoa.

28They led Jesus then from Caiaphas to the Roman governor's palace. It was early morning. They themselves didn't enter the palace because they didn't want to be disqualified from eating the Passover.

29Então Pilatos saiu para recebê-los e perguntou: Que acusação trazeis contra este homem?
MSG
29So Pilate came out to them and spoke. "What charge do you bring against this man?"
AS21
30Eles responderam: Se ele não fosse malfeitor, não o entregaríamos a ti.
MSG
30They said, "If he hadn't been doing something evil, do you think we'd be here bothering you?"

31Disse-lhes Pilatos: Levai-o convosco e julgai-o segundo a vossa lei. Mas os judeus disseram: Não nos é permitido executar ninguém.

31Pilate said, "You take him. Judge him by your law." The Jews said, "We're not allowed to kill anyone."

32Isso aconteceu para que se cumprisse a palavra que Jesus havia falado, referindo-se ao tipo de morte que ele sofreria.

32(This would confirm Jesus' word indicating the way he would die.)

33Então Pilatos retornou ao palácio, chamou Jesus e perguntou-lhe: Tu és o rei dos judeus?

33Pilate went back into the palace and called for Jesus. He said, "Are you the 'King of the Jews'?"

34Jesus respondeu: Perguntas isso por iniciativa própria ou foram outros que te falaram a meu respeito?
MSG
34Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you this about me?"
AS21
35Pilatos prosseguiu: Acaso sou judeu? O teu povo e os principais sacerdotes te entregaram a mim. Que fizeste?

35Pilate said, "Do I look like a Jew? Your people and your high priests turned you over to me. What did you do?"

36Jesus respondeu: O meu reino não é deste mundo. Se o meu reino fosse deste mundo, os meus servos lutariam para que eu não fosse entregue aos judeus. Entretanto, o meu reino não é daqui.

36"My kingdom," said Jesus, "doesn't consist of what you see around you. If it did, my followers would fight so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Jews. But I'm not that kind of king, not the world's kind of king."

37Pilatos lhe perguntou: Então, tu és um rei? Jesus respondeu: És tu que dizes que sou um rei. Foi para isso que nasci e vim ao mundo, a fim de dar testemunho da verdade. Todo aquele que é da verdade ouve a minha voz.

37Then Pilate said, "So, are you a king or not?" Jesus answered, "You tell me. Because I am King, I was born and entered the world so that I could witness to the truth. Everyone who cares for truth, who has any feeling for the truth, recognizes my voice."

38Então Pilatos lhe perguntou: Que é a verdade? E dito isso, saiu de novo para falar aos judeus. E disse-lhes: Não vejo nele crime algum.

38Pilate said, "What is truth?" Then he went back out to the Jews and told them, "I find nothing wrong in this man.

39Todavia, tendes por costume que eu vos solte alguém por ocasião da Páscoa. Quereis que eu vos solte o rei dos judeus?
MSG
39It's your custom that I pardon one prisoner at Passover. Do you want me to pardon the 'King of the Jews'?"

40Então todos responderam, gritando: Este não, mas Barrabás. Barrabás era um líder rebelde.

40They shouted back, "Not this one, but Barabbas!" Barabbas was a Jewish freedom fighter.
