1Jefté, o gileadita, era um homem valente, porém filho de uma prostituta; o nome do seu pai era Gileade.

1Jephthah the Gileadite was one tough warrior. He was the son of a whore, but Gilead was his father.

2A mulher de Gileade também lhe deu filhos. Quando os filhos dela já eram grandes, expulsaram Jefté e lhe disseram: Não herdarás coisa alguma na casa de nosso pai, porque és filho de outra mulher.

2Meanwhile Gilead's legal wife had given him other sons, and when they grew up, his wife's sons threw Jephthah out. They told him: "You're not getting any of our family inheritance—you're the son of another woman."

3Então Jefté fugiu dos seus irmãos e se estabeleceu em Tobe. Um grupo de homens vadios se juntou a Jefté e o seguia.

3So Jephthah fled from his brothers and went to live in the land of Tob. Some riff-raff joined him and went around with him.

4Depois de algum tempo, quando os amonitas entraram em guerra contra Israel,

4Some time passed. And then the Ammonites started fighting Israel.

5With the Ammonites at war with them, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.

6They said to Jephthah: "Come. Be our general and we'll fight the Ammonites."

7Mas Jefté perguntou aos anciãos de Gileade: Acaso não me odiastes e não me expulsastes da casa de meu pai? Por que me procurais, agora que estais em dificuldade?

7But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead: "But you hate me. You kicked me out of my family home. So why are you coming to me now? Because you are in trouble. Right?"

8Os anciãos de Gileade lhe responderam: Nós te procuramos agora para que venhas conosco, combatas os amonitas e sejas o chefe de todos os habitantes de Gileade.

8The elders of Gilead replied, "That's it exactly. We've come to you to get you to go with us and fight the Ammonites. You'll be the head of all of us, all the Gileadites."

9Então Jefté disse aos anciãos de Gileade: Se me levardes de volta para combater os amonitas, e o SENHOR os entregar a mim, então serei o vosso chefe.

9Jephthah addressed the elders of Gilead, "So if you bring me back home to fight the Ammonites and God gives them to me, I'll be your head—is that right?"

10Então os anciãos de Gileade responderam a Jefté: O SENHOR será testemunha entre nós de que faremos o que disseste.

10They said, "God is witness between us; whatever you say, we'll do."

11Assim, Jefté foi com os anciãos de Gileade, e o povo o fez chefe e comandante de todos. E Jefté repetiu todas as suas palavras diante do SENHOR em Mispá.

11Jephthah went along with the elders of Gilead. The people made him their top man and general. And Jephthah repeated what he had said before God at Mizpah.

12Depois disso, Jefté enviou mensageiros ao rei dos amonitas para lhe perguntarem: Que tens contra mim, pois vieste guerrear contra a minha terra?

12Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites with a message: "What's going on here that you have come into my country picking a fight?"

13O rei dos amonitas respondeu aos mensageiros de Jefté: É porque Israel tomou as minhas terras, desde o Arnom até o Jaboque e o Jordão, quando subiu do Egito. Então, restitui-me agora essas terras pacificamente.

13The king of the Ammonites told Jephthah's messengers: "Because Israel took my land when they came up out of Egypt—from the Arnon all the way to the Jabbok and to the Jordan. Give it back peaceably and I'll go."

14Porém Jefté enviou novamente mensageiros ao rei dos amonitas,

14Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites with the message:

15dizendo-lhe: Assim diz Jefté: Israel não tomou a terra de Moabe, nem a terra dos amonitas.

15"Jephthah's word: Israel took no Moabite land and no Ammonite land.

16Mas, quando Israel subiu do Egito, andou pelo deserto até o mar Vermelho e depois chegou a Cades;

16When they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the desert as far as the Red Sea, arriving at Kadesh.

17dali enviou mensageiros ao rei de Edom, pedindo-lhe: Deixa-nos passar pela tua terra. Mas o rei de Edom não lhe deu ouvidos. Então enviou o mesmo pedido ao rei de Moabe, e este também não consentiu. Assim, Israel ficou em Cades.

17There Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom saying, 'Let us pass through your land, please.' But the king of Edom wouldn't let them. Israel also requested permission from the king of Moab, but he wouldn't let them cross either. They were stopped in their tracks at Kadesh.

18Depois disso, os israelitas andaram pelo deserto e contornaram a terra de Edom e a terra de Moabe; passaram a leste de Moabe e acamparam do outro lado do Arnom. Mas não entraram no território de Moabe, pois o Arnom era a fronteira de Moabe.

18So they traveled across the desert and circled around the lands of Edom and Moab. They came out east of the land of Moab and set camp on the other side of the Arnon—they didn't set foot in Moabite territory, for Arnon was the Moabite border.

19Então, Israel enviou mensageiros a Siom, rei dos amorreus, em Hesbom, e lhe pediu: Deixa-nos passar pela tua terra para irmos ao nosso lugar.

19Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites at Heshbon the capital. Israel asked, 'Let us pass, please, through your land on the way to our country.'

20Mas Siom não confiou que Israel fosse apenas passar pelo seu território. Ajuntou todos os seus combatentes, acampou em Jaza e guerreou contra Israel.

20But Sihon didn't trust Israel to cut across his land; he got his entire army together, set up camp at Jahaz, and fought Israel.

21Então o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel, entregou Siom com todos os seus combatentes nas mãos de Israel, que os derrotou. Assim Israel se apoderou de todas as terras dos amorreus que viviam naquela região.

21But God, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his troops to Israel. Israel defeated them. Israel took all the Amorite land,

22Apoderou-se de todo o território dos amorreus, desde o Arnom até o Jaboque e do deserto até o Jordão.

22all Amorite land from Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.

23Visto que o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel, expulsou os amorreus da presença do seu povo Israel, irás possuir esse território agora?

23It was God, the God of Israel, who pushed out the Amorites in favor of Israel; so who do you think you are to try to take it over?

24Tu não te apoderas dos territórios que Camos, teu deus, desapossa para ti? Assim nós nos apoderamos dos territórios que o SENHOR, nosso Deus, desapossa para nós.

24Why don't you just be satisfied with what your god Chemosh gives you and we'll settle for what God, our God, gives us?

25Por acaso és melhor que Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei de Moabe? Alguma vez ele ousou entrar em conflito ou em guerra contra Israel?

25Do you think you're going to come off better than Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab? Did he get anywhere in opposing Israel? Did he risk war?

26Israel viveu em Hesbom e nas suas vilas, em Aroer e nas suas vilas e em todas as cidades ao longo do Arnom durante trezentos anos. Por que não as recuperaste naquele tempo?

26All this time—it's been three hundred years now!—that Israel has lived in Heshbon and its villages, in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns along the Arnon, why didn't you try to snatch them away then?

27Nada fiz contra ti; pelo contrário, tu é que ages com injustiça para comigo, ao guerrear contra mim. Que o SENHOR, que é juiz, faça justiça hoje entre os israelitas e os amonitas.

27No, I haven't wronged you. But this is an evil thing that you are doing to me by starting a fight. Today God the Judge will decide between the People of Israel and the people of Ammon."

28Porém o rei dos amonitas não deu ouvidos à mensagem que Jefté lhe enviou.

28But the king of the Ammonites refused to listen to a word that Jephthah had sent him.
AS21
29Então o Espírito do SENHOR veio sobre Jefté, de modo que ele passou por Gileade e Manassés, chegando a Mispá de Gileade, e dali atacou os amonitas.

29God's Spirit came upon Jephthah. He went across Gilead and Manasseh, went through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there approached the Ammonites.

30E Jefté fez o seguinte voto ao SENHOR: Se entregares os amonitas nas minhas mãos,

30Jephthah made a vow before God: "If you give me a clear victory over the Ammonites,

31qualquer um que sair da porta da minha casa ao meu encontro, quando eu voltar da vitória sobre os amonitas, será do SENHOR. Eu o oferecerei em holocausto.

31then I'll give to God whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in one piece from among the Ammonites—I'll offer it up in a sacrificial burnt offering."

32Assim, Jefté foi ao encontro dos amonitas para guerrear contra eles; e o SENHOR os entregou nas suas mãos.

32Then Jephthah was off to fight the Ammonites. And God gave them to him.

33E Jefté lhes impôs grande derrota, conquistando vinte cidades, desde Aroer até Minite e Abel-Queramim. Assim os amonitas foram subjugados pelos israelitas.

33He beat them soundly, all the way from Aroer to the area around Minnith as far as Abel Keramim—twenty cities! A massacre! Ammonites brought to their knees by the People of Israel.

34Quando Jefté chegou à sua casa em Mispá, sua filha saiu ao seu encontro com danças, ao som de tamborins. E ela era sua única filha; além dela não havia outro filho nem filha.

34Jephthah came home to Mizpah. His daughter ran from the house to welcome him home—dancing to tambourines! She was his only child. He had no son or daughter except her.

35Logo que a viu, ele rasgou as vestes e gritou: Ai de mim, filha minha! Estou muito abatido e tu és a causa da minha desgraça, pois fiz um voto ao SENHOR e não posso voltar atrás.

35When he realized who it was, he ripped his clothes, saying, "Ah, dearest daughter—I'm dirt. I'm despicable. My heart is torn to shreds. I made a vow to God and I can't take it back!"

36E ela lhe respondeu: Meu pai, se fizeste um voto ao SENHOR, faze comigo o que prometeste, pois o SENHOR te vingou dos teus inimigos, os amonitas.

36She said, "Dear father, if you made a vow to God, do to me what you vowed; God did his part and saved you from your Ammonite enemies."

37E ela continuou: Concede-me somente dois meses para vagar pelos montes e chorar com as minhas amigas, porque jamais me casarei.

37And then she said to her father, "But let this one thing be done for me. Give me two months to wander through the hills and lament my virginity since I will never marry, I and my dear friends."

38Vai, disse ele, e deixou que fosse por dois meses. Então ela se foi com as amigas, e choraram pelos montes, porque jamais se casaria.

38"Oh yes, go," he said. He sent her off for two months. She and her dear girlfriends went among the hills, lamenting that she would never marry.

39At the end of the two months, she came back to her father. He fulfilled the vow with her that he had made. She had never slept with a man.It became a custom in Israel

40de todo ano as israelitas irem lamentar por quatro dias a filha de Jefté, o gileadita.

40that for four days every year the young women of Israel went out to mourn for the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
