1Sansão desceu a Timnate e ali viu uma mulher das filhas dos filisteus.

1Samson went down to Timnah. There in Timnah a woman caught his eye, a Philistine girl.

2Quando subiu para casa, disse a seu pai e a sua mãe: Vi uma mulher em Timnate, uma das filisteias; trazei-a para que seja minha mulher.

2He came back and told his father and mother, "I saw a woman in Timnah, a Philistine girl; get her for me as my wife."

3Mas seu pai e sua mãe lhe responderam: Acaso não há mulher entre teus parentes, nem entre todo o nosso povo, para que vás tomar mulher entre os filisteus, aqueles incircuncisos? Mas Sansão disse a seu pai: Toma-a para mim, porque ela me agrada muito.

3His parents said to him, "Isn't there a woman among the girls in the neighborhood of our people? Do you have to go get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?"But Samson said to his father, "Get her for me. She's the one I want—she's the right one."

4Mas seu pai e sua mãe não sabiam que isso vinha do SENHOR, que buscava ocasião contra os filisteus; pois naquela época os filisteus dominavam Israel.

4(His father and mother had no idea that God was behind this, that he was arranging an opportunity against the Philistines. At the time the Philistines lorded it over Israel.)

5Sansão desceu a Timnate com seu pai e sua mãe. Ao chegarem às vinhas de Timnate, um leão novo o atacou, rugindo.

5Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother. When he got to the vineyards of Timnah, a young lion came at him, roaring.

6Então o Espírito do SENHOR se apossou dele, de modo que despedaçou o leão com as mãos vazias, como se fosse um cabrito. Porém não contou nem a seu pai nem a sua mãe o que havia feito.

6The Spirit of God came on him powerfully and he ripped it open barehanded, like tearing a young goat. But he didn't tell his parents what he had done.

7Depois disso, desceu e falou com a mulher que lhe agradava muito.

7Then he went on down and spoke to the woman. In Samson's eyes, she was the one.

8Passado algum tempo, Sansão voltou para casar-se com ela e, quando saiu do caminho para ver o cadáver do leão, encontrou nele um enxame de abelhas e mel.

8Some days later when he came back to get her, he made a little detour to look at what was left of the lion. And there a wonder: a swarm of bees in the lion's carcass—and honey!

9Tirou o mel com as mãos e foi comendo pelo caminho. Quando encontrou seu pai e sua mãe, deu-lhes do mel, e eles também comeram. Mas não lhes disse que havia tirado o mel do corpo do leão.

9He scooped it up in his hands and kept going, eating as he went. He rejoined his father and mother and gave some to them and they ate. But he didn't tell them that he had scooped out the honey from the lion's carcass.

10Seu pai desceu à casa da mulher, e Sansão fez ali um banquete, porque assim costumavam fazer os noivos.

10His father went on down to make arrangements with the woman, while Samson prepared a feast there. That's what the young men did in those days.

11Quando ele chegou, trouxeram trinta companheiros para estar com ele.

11Because the people were wary of him, they arranged for thirty friends to mingle with him.

12E Sansão lhes disse: Vou propor-vos um enigma; se o decifrardes e descobrirdes nos sete dias da festa, eu vos darei trinta vestes de linho e trinta mudas de roupa.

12Samson said to them: "Let me put a riddle to you. If you can figure it out during the seven days of the feast, I'll give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of fine clothing.

13Mas se não conseguirdes decifrá-lo, vós me dareis as trinta vestes de linho e as trinta mudas de roupa. Então eles disseram: Propõe o teu enigma; nós o ouviremos.

13But if you can't figure it out then you'll give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of fine clothing."They said, "Put your riddle. Let's hear it."

14Então ele disse: Do que come saiu comida e do forte saiu doçura. Mas eles não conseguiram decifrar o enigma em três dias.

14So he said,From the eater came something to eat,From the strong came something sweet.They couldn't figure it out. After three days they were still stumped.

15No quarto dia, disseram à mulher de Sansão: Convence teu marido a revelar o enigma. Se não conseguires, vamos atear fogo em ti e na casa de teu pai. Acaso nos convidastes para roubardes o que é nosso?

15On the fourth day they said to Samson's bride, "Worm the answer out of your husband or we'll burn you and your father's household. Have you invited us here to bankrupt us?"

16E a mulher de Sansão chorou diante dele e disse: Tu me odeias e não me amas, pois propuseste ao meu povo um enigma e não o revelaste a mim. E ele disse: Não o revelei nem a meu pai nem a minha mãe. Por que deveria revelá-lo a ti?

16So Samson's bride turned on the tears, saying to him, "You hate me. You don't love me. You've told a riddle to my people but you won't even tell me the answer."He said, "I haven't told my own parents—why would I tell you?"

17Por isso ela chorou diante dele durante o restante da festa. No sétimo dia ele lhe revelou o enigma, pois ela o importunava; e ela revelou o enigma ao seu povo.

17But she turned on the tears all the seven days of the feast. On the seventh day, worn out by her nagging, he told her. Then she went and told it to her people.

18Então os homens da cidade, ainda no sétimo dia, antes do pôr do sol, disseram a Sansão: O que é mais doce do que o mel? O que é mais forte do que o leão? Sansão lhes disse: Se não tivésseis arado com a minha novilha, não teríeis descoberto o meu enigma.

18The men of the town came to him on the seventh day, just before sunset and said,What is sweeter than honey?What is stronger than a lion?And Samson said,If you hadn't plowed with my heifer,You wouldn't have found out my riddle.

19Então o Espírito do SENHOR se apossou dele, de modo que desceu a Asquelom, matou trinta homens de lá, tomou-lhes as roupas e as deu aos que responderam ao enigma. Depois disso, subiu enfurecido à casa de seu pai.

19Then the Spirit of God came powerfully on him. He went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, stripped them, and gave their clothing to those who had solved the riddle. Stalking out, smoking with anger, he went home to his father's house.

20E a mulher de Sansão foi entregue a um dos amigos que havia sido seu companheiro.

20Samson's bride became the wife of the best man at his wedding.
