1O anjo do SENHOR subiu de Gilgal a Boquim e disse: Eu vos tirei do Egito e vos trouxe para a terra que prometi a vossos pais com juramento; e vos disse: Nunca desfarei minha aliança convosco.

1Godangel went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you out of Egypt; I led you to the land that I promised to your fathers; and I said, I'll never break my covenant with you—never!

2E vós não fareis aliança com os habitantes desta terra; pelo contrário, derrubareis os seus altares. Mas não obedecestes à minha voz. Por que fizestes isso?

2And you're never to make a covenant with the people who live in this land. Tear down their altars! But you haven't obeyed me! What's this that you're doing?

3Por isso eu disse: Não os expulsarei da vossa presença, mas serão vossos adversários, e os deuses deles serão uma armadilha para vós.

3"So now I'm telling you that I won't drive them out before you. They'll trip you up and their gods will become a trap."

4Depois que o anjo do SENHOR falou isso a todos os israelitas, o povo chorou em alta voz.

4When God's angel had spoken these words to all the People of Israel, they cried out—oh! how they wept!

5Por isso chamaram aquele lugar de Boquim e ali ofereceram sacrifícios ao SENHOR.

5They named the place Bokim (Weepers). And there they sacrificed to God.

6Depois que Josué despediu o povo, os israelitas saíram para ocupar a terra, cada um para sua herança.

6After Joshua had dismissed them, the People of Israel went off to claim their allotted territories and take possession of the land.

7O povo cultuou o SENHOR durante toda a vida de Josué e dos anciãos que sobreviveram a ele e que haviam visto os grandes feitos que o SENHOR havia realizado em favor de Israel.

7The people worshiped God throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the time of the leaders who survived him, leaders who had been in on all of God's great work that he had done for Israel.

8Então Josué, filho de Num, servo do SENHOR, morreu com a idade de cento e dez anos,

8Then Joshua son of Nun, the servant of God, died. He was 110 years old.

9e o sepultaram no território da sua herança, em Timnate-Heres, na região montanhosa de Efraim, ao norte do monte Gaás.

9They buried him in his allotted inheritance at Timnath Heres in the hills of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash.

10Depois que toda aquela geração foi reunida a seus pais, surgiu outra geração que não conhecia o SENHOR, nem o que ele havia feito por Israel.

10Eventually that entire generation died and was buried. Then another generation grew up that didn't know anything of God or the work he had done for Israel.

11Então os israelitas fizeram o que era mau aos olhos do SENHOR e cultuaram os baalins.

11The People of Israel did evil in God's sight:

12Abandonaram o SENHOR, Deus de seus pais, que os havia tirado da terra do Egito, seguiram os deuses dos povos ao redor e os adoraram. Assim, provocaram a ira do SENHOR,
MSG
12they served Baal-gods; they deserted God, the God of their parents who had led them out of Egypt; they took up with other gods, gods of the peoples around them. They actually worshiped them! And oh, how they angered God

13abandonando-o e cultuando Baal e Astarote.

13as they worshiped god Baal and goddess Astarte!

14Por isso a ira do SENHOR se acendeu contra Israel, e ele os entregou nas mãos de saqueadores, que os roubaram. Ele os entregou nas mãos dos inimigos ao redor, aos quais não puderam mais resistir.

14God's anger was hot against Israel: He handed them off to plunderers who stripped them; he sold them cheap to enemies on all sides. They were helpless before their enemies.

15Por onde quer que saíssem, a mão do SENHOR era contra eles para derrotá-los, conforme o SENHOR havia advertido e jurado. Eles estavam em grande aflição.

15Every time they walked out the door God was with them—but for evil, just as God had said, just as he had sworn he would do. They were in a bad way.

16Mas o SENHOR levantou juízes que os livraram das mãos dos saqueadores.
MSG
16But then God raised up judges who saved them from their plunderers.
AS21
17Entretanto, não deram ouvidos nem aos seus juízes, pois se prostituíram com outros deuses e os adoraram. Logo se desviaram do caminho em que seus pais haviam andado em obediência aos mandamentos do SENHOR. Não seguiram o exemplo deles.

17But they wouldn't listen to their judges; they prostituted themselves to other gods—worshiped them! They lost no time leaving the road walked by their parents, the road of obedience to God's commands. They refused to have anything to do with it.

18Quando o SENHOR levantava um juiz, ficava ao lado dele e livrava os israelitas das mãos dos seus inimigos durante toda a vida daquele juiz. O SENHOR tinha compaixão deles em razão do seu gemido por causa dos que os oprimiam e afligiam.

18When God was setting up judges for them, he would be right there with the judge: He would save them from their enemies' oppression as long as the judge was alive, for God was moved to compassion when he heard their groaning because of those who afflicted and beat them.

19Mas, depois da morte do juiz, voltavam atrás e se tornavam piores do que seus pais, seguindo outros deuses, cultuando-os e adorando-os. Não abandonavam suas práticas nem sua obstinação.

19But when the judge died, the people went right back to their old ways—but even worse than their parents!—running after other gods, serving and worshiping them. Stubborn as mules, they didn't drop a single evil practice.

20A ira do SENHOR se acendeu contra Israel, e ele disse: Visto que esta nação desfez a aliança que fiz com seus pais e não deu ouvidos à minha voz,

20And God's anger blazed against Israel. He said, "Because these people have thrown out my covenant that I commanded their parents and haven't listened to me,

21não expulsarei mais de diante dela nenhuma das nações que Josué deixou quando morreu.
MSG
21I'm not driving out one more person from the nations that Joshua left behind when he died.

22Farei isso para pôr Israel à prova, para ver se guardará o caminho do SENHOR e se andará nele como seus pais o fizeram.
MSG
22I'll use them to test Israel and see whether they stay on God's road and walk down it as their parents did."

23Assim, o SENHOR permitiu que aquelas nações ficassem na terra e não as expulsou logo, nem as entregou nas mãos de Josué.
MSG
23That's why God let those nations remain. He didn't drive them out or let Joshua get rid of them.
