1Estas são as nações que o SENHOR deixou na terra para pôr à prova todos de Israel que não haviam participado de nenhuma das guerras de Canaã

1Now these are the nations which Yahweh left, to test Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

2(ele fez isso para que as gerações dos israelitas que não haviam participado das guerras anteriores pudessem ser treinadas para o combate):

2only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at least those who knew nothing of it before:

4Essas nações ficaram para que os israelitas fossem postos à prova por meio delas, e assim demonstrassem que obedeceriam aos mandamentos que o SENHOR dera aos seus pais, por intermédio de Moisés.

6Tomaram as filhas deles por mulheres e deram suas filhas em casamento aos filhos deles; e cultuavam os seus deuses.

7Os israelitas fizeram o que era mau aos olhos do SENHOR, esquecendo-se do SENHOR, seu Deus, e cultuando os baalins e Aserá.

7The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and forgot Yahweh their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth.

8A ira do SENHOR se acendeu contra Israel, e ele os entregou nas mãos de Cuchã-Risataim, rei da Mesopotâmia. E os israelitas serviram a Cuchã-Risataim durante oito anos.

8Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years.

9Mas quando os israelitas clamaram ao SENHOR, este levantou-lhes um libertador que os livrou: Otoniel, filho de Quenaz, irmão mais novo de Calebe.

10E veio sobre ele o Espírito do SENHOR. E ele se tornou juiz de Israel. Então, foi à guerra, e o SENHOR lhe entregou Cuchã-Risataim, rei da Mesopotâmia, contra quem prevaleceu.

12The children of Israel again did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight.

13Depois de fazer uma aliança com os amonitas e os amalequitas, Eglom foi, derrotou Israel e conquistou a Cidade das Palmeiras.

13He gathered the children of Ammon and Amalek to himself; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees.

14E durante dezoito anos os israelitas foram dominados por Eglom, rei de Moabe.

15Mas quando os israelitas clamaram ao SENHOR, este levantou-lhes um libertador chamado Eúde, filho do benjamita Gera, homem canhoto. E os israelitas enviaram por seu intermédio o pagamento de tributos a Eglom, rei de Moabe.

15But when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.

16Eúde fez para si uma espada de dois gumes com um côvado de comprimento e amarrou-a à coxa direita, por baixo da roupa.

16Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh.

17Então levou os tributos a Eglom, rei de Moabe, que era um homem muito gordo.

17He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.

18Depois de entregar os tributos, Eúde mandou embora os carregadores.

18When he had finished offering the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute.

19No entanto, quando estava junto às imagens de escultura, perto de Gilgal, voltou e disse: Tenho uma mensagem secreta para ti, ó rei. E o rei disse: Silêncio! E todos os seus auxiliares saíram da sua presença.

20Eúde aproximou-se do rei, que estava sentado numa sala de verão particular, e disse-lhe: Tenho uma mensagem de Deus para ti. Quando o rei se levantou da sua cadeira,

20Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat.

21Eúde estendeu a mão esquerda, tirou a espada de sobre a coxa direita e cravou-a na barriga do rei.

21Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:

22O cabo também entrou com a lâmina e, como ele não tirou a espada, a gordura se fechou sobre ela.

22and the handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.

23Então Eúde fechou e trancou as portas da sala e saiu para o pórtico.

23Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them.

24Depois que ele saiu, os servos do rei vieram e, quando viram que as portas da sala estavam trancadas, disseram: Sem dúvida ele está aliviando o ventre no seu quarto de verão.

24After he had gone, his servants came and saw that the doors of the upper room were locked. They said, “Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.”

25E esperaram até ficarem preocupados, mas o rei não abria a porta da sala. Então, tomando a chave, abriram-na, e lá estava o seu senhor morto, estendido no chão.

25They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their lord had fallen down dead on the floor.

26Eúde escapou enquanto eles esperavam e, depois de passar pelas imagens de escultura, chegou a Seirá.

26Ehud escaped while they waited, passed beyond the stone idols, and escaped to Seirah.

27E, assim que chegou, tocou a trombeta na região montanhosa de Efraim. E os israelitas desceram das montanhas, com ele à frente.

27When he had come, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he led them.

28E ele lhes disse: Segui-me, porque o SENHOR entregou os vossos inimigos, os moabitas, nas vossas mãos. Eles o seguiram, tomaram o lugar de passagem do Jordão que leva a Moabe e não deixaram ninguém atravessar o rio.

28He said to them, “Follow me; for Yahweh has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over.

29Naquela ocasião mataram cerca de dez mil moabitas, todos fortes e valentes; e ninguém escapou.

29They struck at that time about ten thousand men of Moab, every strong man, and every man of valor. No man escaped.

30Assim Moabe foi subjugado por Israel naquele dia. E a terra teve sossego durante oitenta anos.

30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years.

31Depois dele, levantou-se Sangar, filho de Anate, que matou seiscentos filisteus com uma aguilhada de bois; ele também libertou Israel.

31After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad. He also saved Israel.
