1Mas os israelitas voltaram a fazer o que era mau aos olhos do SENHOR, e este os entregou nas mãos dos midianitas durante sete anos.

1Yet again the People of Israel went back to doing evil in God's sight. God put them under the domination of Midian for seven years.

2Os midianitas eram mais fortes que Israel, e por isso os israelitas fizeram esconderijos nos montes, nas cavernas e nas fortalezas.

2Midian overpowered Israel. Because of Midian, the People of Israel made for themselves hideouts in the mountains—caves and forts.

3Porque acontecia que, quando Israel semeava, os midianitas, os amalequitas e os outros povos do leste invadiam suas plantações,

3When Israel planted its crops, Midian and Amalek, the easterners, would invade them,

4acampavam na terra e destruíam as plantações até chegarem a Gaza, e não deixavam mantimento em Israel, nem ovelhas, nem bois, nem jumentos.

4camp in their fields, and destroy their crops all the way down to Gaza. They left nothing for them to live on, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey.

5Subiam com seus rebanhos e tendas; vinham em multidão, como gafanhotos. Tanto eles como os seus camelos eram inumeráveis e entravam na terra para destruí-la.

5Bringing their cattle and tents, they came in and took over, like an invasion of locusts. And their camels—past counting! They marched in and devastated the country.

6Assim Israel se enfraqueceu muito por causa dos midianitas. Por isso os israelitas clamaram ao SENHOR.

6The People of Israel, reduced to grinding poverty by Midian, cried out to God for help.

7One time when the People of Israel had cried out to God because of Midian,

8o SENHOR lhes enviou um profeta, que lhes disse: Assim diz o SENHOR, Deus de Israel: Eu vos fiz subir do Egito, e vos tirei da casa da escravidão.

8God sent them a prophet with this message: "God, the God of Israel, says,I delivered you from Egypt,I freed you from a life of slavery;

9Eu vos livrei das mãos dos egípcios e das mãos de todos os que vos oprimiam; expulsei-os da vossa presença e vos dei a terra deles.

9I rescued you from Egypt's brutalityand then from every oppressor;I pushed them out of your wayand gave you their land.

10E também vos disse: Eu sou o SENHOR, vosso Deus; não temais os deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra habitais. Mas não obedecestes à minha voz.

10"And I said to you, 'I am God, your God. Don't for a minute be afraid of the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living.' But you didn't listen to me."

11Então o anjo do SENHOR veio e sentou-se sob o carvalho que estava em Ofra, que pertencia ao abiezrita Joás; seu filho Gideão estava malhando trigo no tanque de espremer uvas, para escondê-lo dos midianitas.

11One day the angel of God came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, whose son Gideon was threshing wheat in the winepress, out of sight of the Midianites.

12Então o anjo do SENHOR apareceu a Gideão e disse: O SENHOR está contigo, homem valente.

12The angel of God appeared to him and said,"God is with you,O mighty warrior!"

13Gideão lhe respondeu: Ah, meu senhor, se o SENHOR está conosco, por que nos aconteceu tudo isso? Onde estão todas as suas maravilhas que nossos pais nos contaram, dizendo: Não foi o SENHOR que nos tirou do Egito? Mas agora o SENHOR nos abandonou e nos entregou nas mãos dos midianitas.

13Gideon replied, "With me, my master? If God is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all the miracle-wonders our parents and grandparents told us about, telling us, 'Didn't God deliver us from Egypt?' The fact is, God has nothing to do with us—he has turned us over to Midian."

14O SENHOR virou-se para ele e lhe disse: Vai nesta tua força e livra Israel das mãos dos midianitas. Não sou eu que estou te enviando?

14But God faced him directly: "Go in this strength that is yours. Save Israel from Midian. Haven't I just sent you?"

15Gideão perguntou-lhe: Ah, meu senhor, com que livrarei Israel? A minha família é a mais pobre em Manassés, e eu sou o menor na casa de meu pai.

15Gideon said to him, "Me, my master? How and with what could I ever save Israel? Look at me. My clan's the weakest in Manasseh and I'm the runt of the litter."

16O SENHOR disse novamente: Eu estarei contigo, e tu derrotarás os midianitas como se fossem um só homem.

16God said to him, "I'll be with you. Believe me, you'll defeat Midian as one man."

17E Gideão continuou: Se tenho achado favor aos teus olhos, dá-me um sinal de que és tu que falas comigo.
MSG
17Gideon said, "If you're serious about this, do me a favor: Give me a sign to back up what you're telling me.

18Peço-te que não saias daqui até que eu volte trazendo minha oferta e a ponha diante de ti. E ele disse: Esperarei até que voltes.
MSG
18Don't leave until I come back and bring you my gift."He said, "I'll wait till you get back."

19Então Gideão entrou e preparou um cabrito e fez bolos sem fermento com um efa de farinha. Pôs a carne num cesto e o caldo numa panela, trouxe tudo para fora e ofereceu-lhe debaixo do carvalho.

19Gideon went and prepared a young goat and a huge amount of unraised bread (he used over half a bushel of flour!). He put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot and took them back under the shade of the oak tree for a sacred meal.

20Mas o anjo de Deus lhe disse: Pega a carne e os bolos sem fermento, coloca-os sobre esta rocha e derrama o caldo por cima deles. E assim ele fez.

20The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and unraised bread, place them on that rock, and pour the broth on them." Gideon did it.

21E o anjo do SENHOR estendeu o cajado que tinha na mão e com a ponta tocou a carne e os bolos sem fermento. Então subiu fogo da rocha e consumiu a carne e os bolos sem fermento. Em seguida, o anjo do SENHOR desapareceu.

21The angel of God stretched out the tip of the stick he was holding and touched the meat and the bread. Fire broke out of the rock and burned up the meat and bread while the angel of God slipped away out of sight.

22Quando Gideão viu que era o anjo do SENHOR, disse: Ai de mim, SENHOR Deus! Eu vi o anjo do SENHOR face a face.

22And Gideon knew it was the angel of God!Gideon said, "Oh no! Master, God! I have seen the angel of God face to face!"

23Porém o SENHOR lhe disse: Paz seja contigo! Não temas; não morrerás.
MSG
23But God reassured him, "Easy now. Don't panic. You won't die."

24Então Gideão edificou ali um altar ao SENHOR e o chamou O SENHOR é Paz. Até hoje o altar está em Ofra dos abiezritas.

24Then Gideon built an altar there to God and named it "God's Peace." It's still called that at Ophrah of Abiezer.

25Naquela mesma noite, o SENHOR disse a Gideão: Toma o segundo novilho de teu pai, o de sete anos, e derruba o altar de Baal, que é de teu pai, e corta o poste de Aserá que está ao lado do altar.

25That night this happened. God said to him, "Take your father's best seven-year-old bull, the prime one. Tear down your father's Baal altar and chop down the Asherah fertility pole beside it.

26Depois disso, edifica um altar ao SENHOR, teu Deus, no cume desta elevação, da forma apropriada. Toma o segundo boi e oferece-o em holocausto, com a lenha do poste de Aserá que tiveres cortado.

26Then build an altar to God, your God, on the top of this hill. Take the prime bull and present it as a Whole-Burnt-Offering, using firewood from the Asherah pole that you cut down."

27Então Gideão chamou dez dos seus servos e fez como o SENHOR lhe havia ordenado. Mas não o fez de dia, e sim de noite, pois temia a casa de seu pai e os homens daquela cidade.

27Gideon selected ten men from his servants and did exactly what God had told him. But because of his family and the people in the neighborhood, he was afraid to do it openly, so he did it that night.

28Quando os homens da cidade se levantaram de madrugada, viram o altar de Baal derrubado, o poste de Aserá, que ficava ao seu lado, cortado, e o segundo novilho sacrificado no altar que havia sido edificado.

28Early in the morning, the people in town were shocked to find Baal's altar torn down, the Asherah pole beside it chopped down, and the prime bull burning away on the altar that had been built.

29Então perguntaram uns aos outros: Quem fez isso? Depois de averiguar e interrogar, descobriram que Gideão havia feito aquilo.

29They kept asking, "Who did this?"Questions and more questions, and then the answer: "Gideon son of Joash did it."

30Por isso os homens da cidade disseram a Joás: Traze para fora teu filho, para que morra, porque derrubou o altar de Baal e cortou o poste de Aserá que estava ao seu lado.

30The men of the town demanded of Joash: "Bring out your son! He must die! Why, he tore down the Baal altar and chopped down the Asherah tree!"

31Mas Joás disse a todos os que se puseram contra ele: Acaso sereis vós que defendereis Baal? Quereis livrá-lo? Todos os que lutarem por ele estarão mortos pela manhã. Se ele é deus, que se defenda a si mesmo, pois o altar dele foi derrubado.

31But Joash stood up to the crowd pressing in on him, "Are you going to fight Baal's battles for him? Are you going to save him? Anyone who takes Baal's side will be dead by morning. If Baal is a god in fact, let him fight his own battles and defend his own altar."

32Por isso, naquele dia, chamaram Gideão de Jerubaal, dizendo: Que Baal lute contra ele, pois derrubou o seu altar.

32They nicknamed Gideon that day Jerub-Baal because after he had torn down the Baal altar, he had said, "Let Baal fight his own battles."

33Então todos os midianitas, os amalequitas e outros povos que vinham do leste se juntaram, passaram o Jordão e acamparam no vale de Jezreel.

33All the Midianites and Amalekites (the easterners) got together, crossed the river, and made camp in the Valley of Jezreel.

34Então o Espírito do SENHOR se apoderou de Gideão, e ele tocou a trombeta para convocar os abiezritas, que se juntaram a ele.
MSG
34God's Spirit came over Gideon. He blew his ram's horn trumpet and the Abiezrites came out, ready to follow him.

35Também enviou mensageiros por toda a tribo de Manassés, que também se juntou a ele. Enviou ainda mensageiros a Aser, Zebulom e Naftali, que saíram ao seu encontro.

35He dispatched messengers all through Manasseh, calling them to the battle; also to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali. They all came.

36Então Gideão disse a Deus: Se vais realmente livrar Israel por meu intermédio, como prometeste,

36Gideon said to God, "If this is right, if you are using me to save Israel as you've said,

37atenta para isto: porei uma porção de lã na eira. Se o orvalho molhar somente a lã, e todo o chão em volta estiver seco, então saberei que livrarás Israel por meu intermédio, como prometeste.
MSG
37then look: I'm placing a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If dew is on the fleece only, but the floor is dry, then I know that you will use me to save Israel, as you said."

38E assim aconteceu. Ao levantar-se de madrugada, no dia seguinte, ele torceu a lã e espremeu dela o orvalho, que encheu uma tigela.

38That's what happened. When he got up early the next morning, he wrung out the fleece—enough dew to fill a bowl with water!
AS21
39Mas Gideão disse a Deus: Não se acenda contra mim a tua ira se eu te fizer mais um pedido. Permite que eu faça só mais um teste com a lã. Peço-te que somente a lã fique seca e que o chão em volta se molhe com o orvalho.
MSG
39Then Gideon said to God, "Don't be impatient with me, but let me say one more thing. I want to try another time with the fleece. But this time let the fleece stay dry, while the dew drenches the ground."

40E Deus fez assim naquela noite, pois somente a lã estava seca e o chão em volta estava molhado com o orvalho.

40God made it happen that very night. Only the fleece was dry while the ground was wet with dew.
