1Então Jerubaal, que é Gideão, e todo o povo que estava com ele levantaram-se de madrugada e acamparam junto à fonte de Harode. O acampamento dos midianitas estava ao norte, no vale, perto do monte Moré.

1Jerub-Baal (Gideon) got up early the next morning, all his troops right there with him. They set up camp at Harod's Spring. The camp of Midian was in the plain, north of them near the Hill of Moreh.

2O SENHOR disse a Gideão: O povo que está contigo é grande demais para eu entregar os midianitas em suas mãos. Para que Israel não se glorie contra mim, dizendo: Foi a minha própria mão que me livrou,

2God said to Gideon, "You have too large an army with you. I can't turn Midian over to them like this—they'll take all the credit, saying, 'I did it all myself,' and forget about me.

3vai e anuncia o seguinte ao povo: Quem for covarde e medroso volte e retire-se do monte Gileade. Então vinte e dois mil se retiraram, e dez mil ficaram.

3Make a public announcement: 'Anyone afraid, anyone who has any qualms at all, may leave Mount Gilead now and go home.' " Twenty-two companies headed for home. Ten companies were left.

4O SENHOR disse também a Gideão: Ainda são muitos. Faze-os descer à beira da água, e ali separarei os que ficarão contigo. E, se eu disser: Este irá contigo; ele irá. Mas se eu disser: Este não irá contigo; ele não irá.

4God said to Gideon: "There are still too many. Take them down to the stream and I'll make a final cut. When I say, 'This one goes with you,' he'll go. When I say, 'This one doesn't go,' he won't go."

5Gideão fez descer o povo à beira da água. Então o SENHOR lhe disse: Todo aquele que lamber as águas com a língua, como faz o cão, tu separarás de um lado; e todo aquele que se ajoelhar para beber, colocarás do outro.

5So Gideon took the troops down to the stream.God said to Gideon: "Everyone who laps with his tongue, the way a dog laps, set on one side. And everyone who kneels to drink, drinking with his face to the water, set to the other side."

6Os que lamberam a água, levando a mão à boca, foram trezentos homens; mas todo o resto do povo se ajoelhou para beber.

6Three hundred lapped with their tongues from their cupped hands. All the rest knelt to drink.

7Então o SENHOR disse a Gideão: Eu vos livrarei e entregarei os midianitas nas tuas mãos com estes trezentos homens que lamberam a água; mas, quanto ao resto do povo, volte cada um ao seu lugar.

7God said to Gideon: "I'll use the three hundred men who lapped at the stream to save you and give Midian into your hands. All the rest may go home."

8Gideão enviou todos os outros homens de Israel para as suas tendas, mas reteve os trezentos, que ficaram com as provisões e as trombetas do povo. O acampamento dos midianitas estava abaixo deles, no vale.

8After Gideon took all their provisions and trumpets, he sent all the Israelites home. He took up his position with the three hundred. The camp of Midian stretched out below him in the valley.

9Naquela mesma noite, o SENHOR disse a Gideão: Levanta-te e desce ao acampamento, pois eu o entregarei nas tuas mãos.

9That night, God told Gideon: "Get up and go down to the camp. I've given it to you.

10Mas, se tens medo de descer, leva contigo teu servo Purá ao acampamento e

10If you have any doubts about going down, go down with Purah your armor bearer;

11ouve o que dizem. Assim as tuas mãos serão fortalecidas para atacar o acampamento. Então ele e o seu servo Purá desceram até o posto avançado das sentinelas do acampamento.

11when you hear what they're saying, you'll be bold and confident." He and his armor bearer Purah went down near the place where sentries were posted.

12Os midianitas, os amalequitas e todos os outros povos do leste cobriam o vale, como uma multidão de gafanhotos; e os seus camelos eram inumeráveis, como a areia na praia do mar.

12Midian and Amalek, all the easterners, were spread out on the plain like a swarm of locusts. And their camels! Past counting, like grains of sand on the seashore!

13No momento em que Gideão chegou, um homem estava contando um sonho ao seu companheiro: Eu tive um sonho em que um pão de cevada vinha rolando sobre o acampamento dos midianitas e, quando chegou a uma tenda, bateu nela e a derrubou. A tenda virou de cima para baixo e ficou estendida por terra.

13Gideon arrived just in time to hear a man tell his friend a dream. He said, "I had this dream: A loaf of barley bread tumbled into the Midianite camp. It came to the tent and hit it so hard it collapsed. The tent fell!"

14Quando o seu companheiro ouviu isso, respondeu: Isso não é outra coisa senão a espada de Gideão, filho de Joás, o israelita. Deus entregou nas mãos dele os midianitas e todo este acampamento.

14His friend said, "This has to be the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite! God has turned Midian—the whole camp!—over to him."

15Quando Gideão ouviu o sonho contado e a sua interpretação, adorou a Deus. Em seguida, voltou ao acampamento de Israel e disse: Levantai-vos, porque o SENHOR entregou o acampamento dos midianitas nas vossas mãos.

15When Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he went to his knees before God in prayer. Then he went back to the Israelite camp and said, "Get up and get going! God has just given us the Midianite army!"

16Então dividiu os trezentos homens em três companhias, pôs trombetas e jarros com tochas acesas nas mãos de cada um deles

16He divided the three hundred men into three companies. He gave each man a trumpet and an empty jar, with a torch in the jar.

17e lhes disse: Olhai para mim e fazei como eu fizer. Assim que eu chegar à extremidade do acampamento, fazei o que eu fizer.

17He said, "Watch me and do what I do. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly what I do.

18Quando eu e todos os que estiverem comigo tocarmos a trombeta, tocai também as trombetas ao redor de todo o acampamento e gritai: Pelo SENHOR e por Gideão!

18When I and those with me blow the trumpets, you also, all around the camp, blow your trumpets and shout, 'For God and for Gideon!' "

19Gideão e os cem homens que estavam com ele chegaram à extremidade do acampamento no princípio da vigília da meia-noite, logo depois da troca das sentinelas. Então tocaram as trombetas e despedaçaram os jarros que tinham nas mãos.

19Gideon and his hundred men got to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the sentries had been posted. They blew the trumpets, at the same time smashing the jars they carried.

20Assim as três companhias tocaram as trombetas e despedaçaram os jarros, segurando com a mão esquerda a tocha e com a direita a trombeta. E gritaram: À espada! Pelo SENHOR e por Gideão!

20All three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands, ready to blow, and shouted, "A sword for God and for Gideon!"

21E cada um permaneceu no seu posto ao redor do acampamento. Então todos os midianitas, gritando, começaram a fugir.

21They were stationed all around the camp, each man at his post. The whole Midianite camp jumped to its feet. They yelled and fled.

22Quando as trezentas trombetas foram tocadas, o SENHOR fez com que todos no acampamento voltassem a espada uns contra os outros. Mas muitos fugiram até Bete-Sita, em direção de Zererá, até os limites de Abel-Meolá, perto de Tabate.

22When the three hundred blew the trumpets, God aimed each Midianite's sword against his companion, all over the camp. They ran for their lives—to Beth Shittah, toward Zererah, to the border of Abel Meholah near Tabbath.

23Então os homens de Israel, das tribos de Naftali, de Aser e de todo o Manassés foram convocados e perseguiram os midianitas.

23Israelites rallied from Naphtali, from Asher, and from all over Manasseh. They had Midian on the run.

24Gideão também enviou mensageiros por toda a região montanhosa de Efraim, dizendo: Descei para atacar os midianitas e ocupai as águas deles até Bete-Bara e também o Jordão. Todos os homens de Efraim foram convocados e ocuparam as águas até Bete-Bara e também o Jordão.

24Gideon then sent messengers through all the hill country of Ephraim, urging them, "Come down against Midian! Capture the fords of the Jordan at Beth Barah."

25E prenderam dois líderes dos midianitas: Orebe e Zeebe. Mataram Orebe na rocha de Orebe, e Zeebe no tanque de espremer uvas de Zeebe. Em seguida, perseguiram os midianitas, e depois levaram a cabeça de Orebe e a de Zeebe a Gideão, que estava do outro lado do Jordão.

25So all the men of Ephraim rallied and captured the fords of the Jordan at Beth Barah. They also captured the two Midianite commanders Oreb (Raven) and Zeeb (Wolf). They killed Oreb at Raven Rock; Zeeb they killed at Wolf Winepress. And they pressed the pursuit of Midian. They brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon across the Jordan.
