1Os fariseus e alguns escribas, vindos de Jerusalém, foram encontrar-se com Jesus.

1The Pharisees, along with some religion scholars who had come from Jerusalem, gathered around him.

2E repararam que alguns dos discípulos de Jesus comiam pão com as mãos impuras, isto é, sem lavá-las.

2They noticed that some of his disciples weren't being careful with ritual washings before meals.

3Pois os fariseus e todos os judeus, guardando a tradição dos anciãos, não comem sem lavar as mãos cuidadosamente.

3The Pharisees—Jews in general, in fact—would never eat a meal without going through the motions of a ritual hand-washing,

5The Pharisees and religion scholars asked, "Why do your disciples flout the rules, showing up at meals without washing their hands?"

6Jesus lhes respondeu: Hipócritas, bem profetizou Isaías acerca de vós, como está escrito: Este povo honra-me com os lábios; seu coração, porém, está longe de mim;

6Jesus answered, "Isaiah was right about frauds like you, hit the bull's-eye in fact: These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their heart isn't in it.

10Moses said, 'Respect your father and mother,' and, 'Anyone denouncing father or mother should be killed.'

11But you weasel out of that by saying that it's perfectly acceptable to say to father or mother, 'Gift! What I owed you I've given as a gift to God,'

14Jesus called the crowd together again and said, "Listen now, all of you—take this to heart.

15It's not what you swallow that pollutes your life; it's what you vomit—that's the real pollution."

17When he was back home after being with the crowd, his disciples said, "We don't get it. Put it in plain language."

18Jesus lhes respondeu: Então vós também não entendeis? Não compreendeis que tudo o que entra de fora no homem não pode torná-lo impuro?

18Jesus said, "Are you being willfully stupid? Don't you see that what you swallow can't contaminate you?

19Porque não entra no seu coração, mas no estômago, e depois é expelido. Assim, Jesus declarou puros todos os alimentos.

19It doesn't enter your heart but your stomach, works its way through the intestines, and is finally flushed." (That took care of dietary quibbling; Jesus was saying that all foods are fit to eat.)

21obscenities, lusts, thefts, murders, adulteries,

22cobiça, maldade, engano, libertinagem, inveja, blasfêmia, arrogância e insensatez.

22greed, depravity, deceptive dealings, carousing, mean looks, slander, arrogance, foolishness—

23Todas essas coisas más procedem de dentro do homem e o tornam impuro.

23all these are vomit from the heart. There is the source of your pollution."

24Jesus saiu dali e foi para as regiões de Tiro e Sidom. Entrou numa casa e não queria que ninguém soubesse disso, mas não pôde passar despercebido.

24From there Jesus set out for the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house there where he didn't think he would be found, but he couldn't escape notice.

25E certa mulher, cuja filha estava possessa de um espírito impuro, logo ouviu falar dele; então, foi e prostrou-se aos seus pés;

25He was barely inside when a woman who had a disturbed daughter heard where he was. She came and knelt at his feet,

26(a mulher era grega, de origem siro-fenícia) e suplicava-lhe que expulsasse de sua filha o demônio.

26begging for help. The woman was Greek, Syro-Phoenician by birth. She asked him to cure her daughter.

27Jesus lhe respondeu: Deixa que primeiro os filhos se fartem, pois não é justo tomar o pão dos filhos e jogá-lo para os cachorrinhos.

27He said, "Stand in line and take your turn. The children get fed first. If there's any left over, the dogs get it."

28Ela, porém, prosseguiu, dizendo-lhe: Sim, Senhor; mas também os cachorrinhos, debaixo da mesa, comem das migalhas dos filhos.

28She said, "Of course, Master. But don't dogs under the table get scraps dropped by the children?"

29Então ele lhe disse: Por causa dessa palavra, vai; o demônio já saiu de tua filha.

29Jesus was impressed. "You're right! On your way! Your daughter is no longer disturbed. The demonic affliction is gone."

30Ao voltar para casa, ela achou a menina deitada sobre a cama; o demônio já havia saído.

30She went home and found her daughter relaxed on the bed, the torment gone for good.

31Depois de partir da região de Tiro, Jesus foi através de Sidom até o mar da Galileia, passando pela região de Decápolis.

31Then he left the region of Tyre, went through Sidon back to Galilee Lake and over to the district of the Ten Towns.

32E trouxeram-lhe um surdo, que também falava com dificuldade, rogando-lhe que lhe impusesse a mão.

32Some people brought a man who could neither hear nor speak and asked Jesus to lay a healing hand on him.

33Jesus tirou-o do meio da multidão e, em particular, colocou-lhe os dedos nos ouvidos e, cuspindo, tocou-lhe a língua.

33He took the man off by himself, put his fingers in the man's ears and some spit on the man's tongue.

34Então, levantando os olhos ao céu, suspirou e disse-lhe: Efatá (que quer dizer: Abre-te!).

34Then Jesus looked up in prayer, groaned mightily, and commanded, "Ephphatha!—Open up!"

35E seus ouvidos se abriram, a língua se soltou, e ele começou a falar perfeitamente.

35And it happened. The man's hearing was clear and his speech plain—just like that.

36Então Jesus lhes ordenou que a ninguém contassem aquilo; mas, quanto mais ele proibia, mais eles o divulgavam.

36Jesus urged them to keep it quiet, but they talked it up all the more,

37E maravilhavam-se grandemente, dizendo: Ele faz bem todas as coisas; faz até mesmo os surdos ouvirem e os mudos falarem.

37beside themselves with excitement. "He's done it all and done it well. He gives hearing to the deaf, speech to the speechless."
