1No mesmo dia, tendo saído de casa, Jesus sentou-se à beira-mar.

1At about that same time Jesus left the house and sat on the beach.

2Grandes multidões reuniram-se junto a ele; de modo que ele entrou num barco e sentou-se; e todo o povo estava em pé na praia.

2In no time at all a crowd gathered along the shoreline, forcing him to get into a boat.

3E falou-lhes muitas coisas por meio de parábolas, dizendo: O semeador saiu a semear.

3Using the boat as a pulpit, he addressed his congregation, telling stories. "What do you make of this? A farmer planted seed.

4Enquanto semeava, uma parte das sementes caiu à beira do caminho, e as aves vieram e a comeram.

4As he scattered the seed, some of it fell on the road, and birds ate it.

5Outra parte caiu em solo pedregoso, onde não havia muita terra, e logo brotou, pois a terra não era profunda;

5Some fell in the gravel; it sprouted quickly but didn't put down roots,

6Mas saiu o sol e a queimou; e, como não tinha raiz, secou.

6so when the sun came up it withered just as quickly.

7Outra parte caiu entre espinhos, os quais a sufocaram quando cresceram.

7Some fell in the weeds; as it came up, it was strangled by the weeds.

8Mas outra parte caiu em terra boa e deu fruto; um grão produziu outros cem; outro, sessenta; e outro, trinta.

8Some fell on good earth, and produced a harvest beyond his wildest dreams.

9"Are you listening to this? Really listening?" Why Tell Stories?

10E, aproximando-se dele, os discípulos lhe perguntaram: Por que falas às multidões por meio de parábolas?

10The disciples came up and asked, "Why do you tell stories?"

11Jesus lhes respondeu: Porque a vós é dado conhecer os mistérios do reino do céu, mas não a eles.
MSG
11He replied, "You've been given insight into God's kingdom. You know how it works. Not everybody has this gift, this insight; it hasn't been given to them.

12Pois ao que tem, lhe será dado, e terá em grande quantidade; mas ao que não tem, até aquilo que tem lhe será tirado.

12Whenever someone has a ready heart for this, the insights and understandings flow freely. But if there is no readiness, any trace of receptivity soon disappears.

13Por isso eu lhes falo por meio de parábolas; porque, vendo, não veem; e, ouvindo, não ouvem nem entendem.

13That's why I tell stories: to create readiness, to nudge the people toward receptive insight. In their present state they can stare till doomsday and not see it, listen till they're blue in the face and not get it.

14E neles se cumpre a profecia de Isaías, que diz:

14I don't want Isaiah's forecast repeated all over again: Your ears are open but you don't hear a thing. Your eyes are awake but you don't see a thing.

15Porque o coração deste povo se tornou insensível, e com os ouvidos ouviram de má vontade, e fecharam os olhos para que não vejam, nem ouçam com os ouvidos, nem entendam com o coração, nem se convertam, e eu os cure.

15The people are blockheads! They stick their fingers in their ears so they won't have to listen; They screw their eyes shut so they won't have to look, so they won't have to deal with me face-to-face and let me heal them.

16Mas bem-aventurados os vossos olhos, porque veem, e os vossos ouvidos, porque ouvem.

16"But you have God-blessed eyes—eyes that see! And God-blessed ears—ears that hear!

17Pois em verdade vos digo que muitos profetas e justos desejaram ver o que vedes, e não viram; e ouvir o que ouvis, e não ouviram.

17A lot of people, prophets and humble believers among them, would have given anything to see what you are seeing, to hear what you are hearing, but never had the chance.

18Compreendei, pois, a parábola do semeador.

18"Study this story of the farmer planting seed.

19A todo o que ouve a palavra do reino e não a entende, vem o Maligno e tira o que lhe foi semeado no coração; esse é o que foi semeado à beira do caminho.

19When anyone hears news of the kingdom and doesn't take it in, it just remains on the surface, and so the Evil One comes along and plucks it right out of that person's heart. This is the seed the farmer scatters on the road.

20E o que foi semeado no solo pedregoso, esse é o que ouve a palavra e a recebe imediatamente com alegria;

20"The seed cast in the gravel—this is the person who hears and instantly responds with enthusiasm.

21mas não tem raiz em si mesmo e dura pouco. Quando vem a tribulação ou a perseguição por causa da palavra, logo tropeça.

21But there is no soil of character, and so when the emotions wear off and some difficulty arrives, there is nothing to show for it.

22E o que foi semeado entre os espinhos, esse é o que ouve a palavra, mas as preocupações do mundo e a sedução da riqueza sufocam a palavra, e ela não produz fruto.

22"The seed cast in the weeds is the person who hears the kingdom news, but weeds of worry and illusions about getting more and wanting everything under the sun strangle what was heard, and nothing comes of it.

23Mas o que foi semeado em boa terra, esse é o que ouve a palavra e a entende; e dá fruto; e um produz cem; outro, sessenta; e outro, trinta.

23"The seed cast on good earth is the person who hears and takes in the News, and then produces a harvest beyond his wildest dreams."

24Jesus apresentou-lhes outra parábola, dizendo: O reino do céu é semelhante ao homem que semeou boa semente em seu campo.

24He told another story. "God's kingdom is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field.

25Mas, enquanto os homens dormiam, seu inimigo veio, semeou joio no meio do trigo e retirou-se.

25That night, while his hired men were asleep, his enemy sowed thistles all through the wheat and slipped away before dawn.

26Assim, quando o trigo cresceu e começou a dar espigas, apareceu também o joio.

26When the first green shoots appeared and the grain began to form, the thistles showed up, too.

27Então os servos do proprietário chegaram e lhe disseram: Senhor, não semeaste boa semente em teu campo? De onde vem o joio?

27"The farmhands came to the farmer and said, 'Master, that was clean seed you planted, wasn't it? Where did these thistles come from?'

28Ele lhes respondeu: Algum inimigo fez isso. E os servos lhe disseram: Queres, então, que o arranquemos?

28"He answered, 'Some enemy did this.' "The farmhands asked, 'Should we weed out the thistles?'

29Mas ele disse: Não, para que, ao tirar o joio, não arranqueis com ele também o trigo.

29"He said, 'No, if you weed the thistles, you'll pull up the wheat, too.

30Deixai ambos crescerem juntos até a colheita. Na época da colheita, direi aos que fazem a colheita: Ajuntai primeiro o joio e atai-o em feixes para queimá-lo; o trigo, porém, recolhei-o no meu celeiro.

30Let them grow together until harvest time. Then I'll instruct the harvesters to pull up the thistles and tie them in bundles for the fire, then gather the wheat and put it in the barn.' "

31Jesus apresentou-lhes outra parábola, dizendo: O reino do céu é comparável a um grão de mostarda que um homem pegou e semeou em seu campo.

31Another story. "God's kingdom is like a pine nut that a farmer plants.

32Mesmo sendo a menor das sementes, quando cresce é o maior dos arbustos e torna-se uma árvore, de modo que as aves do céu vêm e se aninham nos seus ramos.

32It is quite small as seeds go, but in the course of years it grows into a huge pine tree, and eagles build nests in it."

33Jesus lhes falou outra parábola: O reino do céu é comparável ao fermento que uma mulher misturou com três medidas de farinha, até ficar tudo fermentado.

33Another story. "God's kingdom is like yeast that a woman works into the dough for dozens of loaves of barley bread—and waits while the dough rises."

34Jesus falou todas essas coisas às multidões por meio de parábolas, e nada lhes falava sem parábolas;

34All Jesus did that day was tell stories—a long storytelling afternoon.

35para que se cumprisse o que havia sido falado pelo profeta: Abrirei a minha boca em parábolas; publicarei coisas ocultas desde a fundação do mundo.

35His storytelling fulfilled the prophecy: I will open my mouth and tell stories; I will bring out into the open things hidden since the world's first day.

36Então, deixando as multidões, Jesus entrou em casa. E aproximaram-se dele os seus discípulos, dizendo: Explica-nos a parábola do joio do campo.

36Jesus dismissed the congregation and went into the house. His disciples came in and said, "Explain to us that story of the thistles in the field."

37E ele, respondendo, disse: O que semeia a boa semente é o Filho do homem;

37So he explained. "The farmer who sows the pure seed is the Son of Man.

38o campo é o mundo; a boa semente são os filhos do reino; o joio são os filhos do Maligno;

38The field is the world, the pure seeds are subjects of the kingdom, the thistles are subjects of the Devil,
AS21
39o inimigo que o semeou é o Diabo; a colheita é o fim do mundo, e os que fazem a colheita são os anjos.

39and the enemy who sows them is the Devil. The harvest is the end of the age, the curtain of history. The harvest hands are angels.

40Assim como o joio é colhido e queimado no fogo, assim será no fim do mundo.

40"The picture of thistles pulled up and burned is a scene from the final act.

41O Filho do homem enviará seus anjos, e eles ajuntarão do seu reino tudo que serve de tropeço, e os que praticam o mal,

41The Son of Man will send his angels, weed out the thistles from his kingdom,
AS21
42e os lançarão na fornalha de fogo; ali haverá choro e ranger de dentes.

42pitch them in the trash, and be done with them. They are going to complain to high heaven, but nobody is going to listen.

43Então os justos resplandecerão como o sol no reino de seu Pai. Quem tem ouvidos, ouça.

43At the same time, ripe, holy lives will mature and adorn the kingdom of their Father.

44O reino do céu é semelhante a um tesouro escondido no campo, que um homem esconde, depois de achá-lo. Então, em sua alegria, vai e vende tudo que tem, e compra aquele campo.

44"God's kingdom is like a treasure hidden in a field for years and then accidently found by a trespasser. The finder is ecstatic—what a find!—and proceeds to sell everything he owns to raise money and buy that field.

45O reino do céu também é semelhante a um negociante que procura boas pérolas.

45"Or, God's kingdom is like a jewel merchant on the hunt for excellent pearls.
AS21
46Encontrando uma pérola de grande valor, foi e vendeu tudo que possuía, e a comprou.

46Finding one that is flawless, he immediately sells everything and buys it.
AS21
47Da mesma forma, o reino do céu é semelhante a uma rede lançada ao mar, que apanhou todo tipo de peixes.

47"Or, God's kingdom is like a fishnet cast into the sea, catching all kinds of fish.
AS21
48E, quando ficou cheia, os pescadores puxaram-na para a praia; e, sentando-se, puseram os bons em cestos, mas, jogaram fora os ruins.

48When it is full, it is hauled onto the beach. The good fish are picked out and put in a tub; those unfit to eat are thrown away.

49Assim será no fim do mundo: os anjos sairão e separarão os maus dentre os justos,

49That's how it will be when the curtain comes down on history. The angels will come and cull the bad fish
AS21
50e os lançarão na fornalha de fogo; ali haverá choro e ranger de dentes.
MSG
50and throw them in the garbage. There will be a lot of desperate complaining, but it won't do any good."

51Entendestes todas essas coisas? Eles lhe disseram: Entendemos.
MSG
51Jesus asked, "Are you starting to get a handle on all this?" They answered, "Yes."
AS21
52E disse-lhes: Por isso, todo escriba que aprendeu sobre o reino do céu é semelhante a um chefe de família que tira do seu tesouro coisas novas e velhas.

52He said, "Then you see how every student well-trained in God's kingdom is like the owner of a general store who can put his hands on anything you need, old or new, exactly when you need it."

53E, tendo concluído essas parábolas, Jesus se retirou dali.

53When Jesus finished telling these stories, he left there,
AS21
54E, chegando à sua cidade, passou a ensinar o povo na sinagoga, de modo que este se maravilhava e dizia: De onde lhe vêm essa sabedoria e esses poderes miraculosos?

54returned to his hometown, and gave a lecture in the meetinghouse. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. "We had no idea he was this good!" they said. "How did he get so wise, get such ability?"

55Não é este o filho do carpinteiro? Sua mãe não se chama Maria, e seus irmãos, Tiago, José, Simão e Judas?

55But in the next breath they were cutting him down: "We've known him since he was a kid; he's the carpenter's son. We know his mother, Mary. We know his brothers James and Joseph, Simon and Judas.

56E não estão entre nós todas as suas irmãs? Então, de onde lhe vem tudo isso?

56All his sisters live here. Who does he think he is?"

57E escandalizavam-se por causa dele. Jesus, porém, lhes disse: É somente em sua terra e em sua casa que um profeta não é honrado.

57They got their noses all out of joint.
AS21
58E não realizou muitos milagres ali, por causa da incredulidade deles.
MSG
58But Jesus said, "A prophet is taken for granted in his hometown and his family." He didn't do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference.
