1Então toda a comunidade levantou a voz e gritou; e o povo chorou naquela noite.

1The whole community was in an uproar, wailing all night long.

2E todos os israelitas murmuraram contra Moisés e Arão; e toda a comunidade lhes disse: Seria melhor se tivéssemos morrido na terra do Egito. Seria melhor se tivéssemos morrido neste deserto!

2All the People of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The entire community was in on it: "Why didn't we die in Egypt? Or in this wilderness?

3Por que o SENHOR nos trouxe a esta terra para cairmos à espada? Nossas mulheres e nossas crianças serão capturadas. Não seria melhor voltar para o Egito?

3Why has God brought us to this country to kill us? Our wives and children are about to become plunder. Why don't we just head back to Egypt? And right now!"

4E diziam uns aos outros: Escolhamos um chefe e voltemos para o Egito.
MSG
4Soon they were all saying it to one another: "Let's pick a new leader; let's head back to Egypt."

5Então Moisés e Arão prostraram-se com o rosto em terra diante de toda a assembleia da comunidade dos israelitas.

5Moses and Aaron fell on their faces in front of the entire community, gathered in emergency session.

6E Josué, filho de Num, e Calebe, filho de Jefoné, que faziam parte dos que haviam sondado a terra, rasgaram suas roupas

6Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, members of the scouting party, ripped their clothes

7e falaram a toda a comunidade dos israelitas: A terra por onde passamos para conhecê-la é extraordinária.
MSG
7and addressed the assembled People of Israel: "The land we walked through and scouted out is a very good land—very good indeed.
AS21
8Se o SENHOR se agradar de nós, então nos estabelecerá nessa terra e a dará para nós, terra que dá leite e mel.
MSG
8If God is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land that flows, as they say, with milk and honey. And he'll give it to us.
AS21
9Apenas não sejais rebeldes contra o SENHOR e não temais o povo dessa terra, pois será comido por nós como pão. Eles estão sem defesa, e o SENHOR está conosco. Não os temais.

9Just don't rebel against God! And don't be afraid of those people. Why, we'll have them for lunch! They have no protection and God is on our side. Don't be afraid of them!"

10Mas toda a comunidade disse que fossem apedrejados. Então a glória do SENHOR apareceu na tenda da revelação a todos os israelitas.

10But, up in arms now, the entire community was talking of hurling stones at them.Just then the bright Glory of God appeared at the Tent of Meeting. Every Israelite saw it.

11E o SENHOR disse a Moisés: Até quando este povo me desprezará e não crerá em mim, apesar de todos os sinais que tenho feito no meio dele?

11God said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me like dirt? How long refuse to trust me? And with all these signs I've done among them!
AS21
12Eu o ferirei e o rejeitarei com uma praga; e farei de ti uma nação maior e mais forte do que ele.
MSG
12I've had enough—I'm going to hit them with a plague and kill them. But I'll make you into a nation bigger and stronger than they ever were."

13Então Moisés respondeu ao SENHOR: Os egípcios ficarão sabendo que fizeste sair este povo do meio deles, com a tua força,

13But Moses said to God, "The Egyptians are going to hear about this! You delivered this people from Egypt with a great show of strength, and now this?
AS21
14e contarão isso aos habitantes desta terra. Ó SENHOR, eles ouviram que tu estás no meio deste povo, e que tu, ó SENHOR, és visto face a face, e a tua nuvem permanece sobre este povo, e vais adiante dele numa coluna de nuvem de dia e numa coluna de fogo de noite.

14The Egyptians will tell everyone. They've already heard that you are God, that you are on the side of this people, that you are present among them, that they see you with their own eyes in your Cloud that hovers over them, in the Pillar of Cloud that leads them by day and the Pillar of Fire at night.

15Se matares este povo como se fosse um só homem, então as nações que ouviram falar da tua fama dirão:

15If you kill this entire people in one stroke, all the nations that have heard what has been going on will say,

16O SENHOR matou este povo no deserto porque não pôde levá-lo para a terra que lhe havia prometido com juramento.

16'Since God couldn't get these people into the land which he had promised to give them, he slaughtered them out in the wilderness.'

17Agora, rogo-te que o poder do meu SENHOR se mostre grande, conforme tens dito:

17"Now, please, let the power of the Master expand, enlarge itself greatly, along the lines you have laid out earlier when you said,

18O SENHOR é tardio em irar-se e grande em misericórdia; perdoa a culpa e a transgressão; ao culpado não considera inocente, mas castiga a culpa dos pais nos filhos até a terceira e a quarta geração.

18God, slow to get angry and huge in loyal love,forgiving iniquity and rebellion and sin;Still, never just whitewashing sin.But extending the fallout of parents' sinsto children into the third,even the fourth generation.

19Rogo-te que perdoes o pecado deste povo, segundo a tua grande misericórdia, como tens perdoado desde o Egito até aqui.

19"Please forgive the wrongdoing of this people out of the extravagance of your loyal love just as all along, from the time they left Egypt, you have been forgiving this people."

20E o SENHOR lhe disse: Por causa da tua palavra, eu o perdoo.
MSG
20God said, "I forgive them, honoring your words.
AS21
21Mas, tão certo como eu vivo, e como a glória do SENHOR encherá toda a terra,
MSG
21But as I live and as the Glory of God fills the whole Earth—
AS21
22nenhum de todos os homens que viram a minha glória e os sinais que fiz no Egito e no deserto, e mesmo assim me testaram estas dez vezes, não obedecendo à minha voz,
MSG
22not a single person of those who saw my Glory, saw the miracle signs I did in Egypt and the wilderness, and who have tested me over and over and over again, turning a deaf ear to me—

23nenhum deles verá a terra que prometi a seus pais com juramento. Nenhum daqueles que me desprezaram a verá.
MSG
23not one of them will set eyes on the land I so solemnly promised to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with such repeated contempt will see it.
AS21
24Mas o meu servo Calebe, eu o levarei para a terra em que entrou, e a sua posteridade a possuirá, porque teve outro espírito e perseverou em seguir-me.

24"But my servant Caleb—this is a different story. He has a different spirit; he follows me passionately. I'll bring him into the land that he scouted and his children will inherit it.

25Fazei meia-volta amanhã e caminhai para o deserto em direção ao mar Vermelho. Os amalequitas e os cananeus habitam no vale.

25"Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are so well established in the valleys, for right now change course and head back into the wilderness following the route to the Red Sea."

26Depois disso, o SENHOR falou a Moisés e Arão:

26God spoke to Moses and Aaron:

27Até quando sofrerei com esta comunidade perversa, que murmura contra mim? Tenho ouvido as murmurações dos israelitas contra mim.

27"How long is this going to go on, all this grumbling against me by this evil-infested community? I've had my fill of complaints from these grumbling Israelites.

28Dize-lhes: Pela minha vida, diz o SENHOR, certamente vos farei conforme o que pedistes:

28Tell them, As I live—God's decree—here's what I'm going to do:
AS21
29vossos cadáveres cairão neste deserto; nenhum de todos vós que fostes contados, segundo o vosso recenseamento, de vinte anos para cima, que contra mim murmurou,

29Your corpses are going to litter the wilderness—every one of you twenty years and older who was counted in the census, this whole generation of grumblers and grousers.

30sim, nenhum de vós entrará na terra a respeito da qual jurei que vos faria habitar nela, salvo Calebe, filho de Jefoné, e Josué, filho de Num.

30Not one of you will enter the land and make your home there, the firmly and solemnly promised land, except for Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

31Mas as vossas crianças, sobre as quais dissestes que seriam capturadas, farei entrar nesta terra, e elas conhecerão a terra que rejeitastes.

31"Your children, the very ones that you said would be taken for plunder, I'll bring in to enjoy the land you rejected

32Quanto a vós, porém, vossos cadáveres cairão neste deserto.
MSG
32while your corpses will be rotting in the wilderness.
AS21
33Vossos filhos serão pastores no deserto quarenta anos e levarão sobre si as vossas infidelidades, até que os vossos cadáveres sejam consumidos neste deserto.
MSG
33These children of yours will live as shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, living with the fallout of your whoring unfaithfulness until the last of your generation lies a corpse in the wilderness.

34Segundo o número dos dias em que sondastes a terra, isto é, quarenta dias, levareis sobre vós as vossas culpas por quarenta anos, um ano por um dia, e sabereis o que significa me desobedecer.

34You scouted out the land for forty days; your punishment will be a year for each day, a forty-year sentence to serve for your sins—a long schooling in my displeasure.

35Eu, o SENHOR, falei, e certamente assim o farei a toda esta comunidade perversa, aos que se rebelaram contra mim. Serão consumidos neste deserto, e aqui morrerão.

35"I, God, have spoken. I will most certainly carry out these things against this entire evil-infested community which has banded together against me. In this wilderness they will come to their end. There they will die."

36Quanto aos homens que Moisés havia mandado sondar a terra e que, ao voltarem, fizeram toda a comunidade murmurar contra ele, depreciando a terra,

36So it happened that the men Moses sent to scout out the land returned to circulate false rumors about the land causing the entire community to grumble against Moses—

37aqueles mesmos homens que depreciaram a terra morreram de praga diante do SENHOR.
MSG
37all these men died. Having spread false rumors of the land, they died in a plague, confronted by God.
AS21
38Mas Josué, filho de Num, e Calebe, filho de Jefoné, que também haviam ido sondar a terra, continuaram vivos.
MSG
38Only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh were left alive of the men who went to scout out the land.
AS21
39E Moisés falou essas palavras a todos os israelitas, e todo o povo ficou muito triste.
MSG
39When Moses told all of this to the People of Israel, they mourned long and hard.
AS21
40Então, levantando-se de manhã cedo, subiram ao alto do monte e disseram: Aqui estamos. Subiremos ao lugar que o SENHOR falou, porque pecamos.
MSG
40But early the next morning they started out for the high hill country, saying, "We're here; we're ready—let's go up and attack the land that God promised us. We sinned, but now we're ready."

41Moisés respondeu: Por que transgredis a ordem do SENHOR? Isso não dará certo.
MSG
41But Moses said, "Why are you crossing God's command yet again? This won't work.
AS21
42Não subais, pois o SENHOR não está convosco, para que não sejais feridos pelos vossos inimigos.
MSG
42Don't attack. God isn't with you in this—you'll be beaten badly by your enemies.
AS21
43Porque os amalequitas e os cananeus estão ali, bem na vossa frente, e caireis à espada; pois o SENHOR não estará convosco, pois vos desviastes dele.
MSG
43The Amalekites and Canaanites are ready for you and they'll kill you. Because you have left off obediently following God, God is not going to be with you in this."

44Assim mesmo eles subiram ao alto do monte; mas a arca da aliança do SENHOR e Moisés não saíram do acampamento.
MSG
44But they went anyway; recklessly and arrogantly they climbed to the high hill country. But the Chest of the Covenant and Moses didn't budge from the camp.
AS21
45Então os amalequitas e os cananeus, que habitavam na montanha, desceram e os feriram, derrotando-os até Hormá.
MSG
45The Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in the hill country came out of the hills and attacked and beat them, a rout all the way down to Hormah.
