1Depois disso, os israelitas partiram e acamparam nas planícies de Moabe, do outro lado do Jordão, na altura de Jericó.

1The People of Israel marched on and camped on the Plains of Moab at Jordan-Jericho.

2Balaque, filho de Zipor, viu tudo o que Israel havia feito aos amorreus.

2Balak son of Zippor learned of all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

3E Moabe tinha muito medo do povo de Israel, pois eram muitos; e os moabitas andavam angustiados por causa dos israelitas.

3The people of Moab were in a total panic because of Israel. There were so many of them! They were terrorized.

4Por isso, disseram aos chefes de Midiã: Agora esta multidão vai devorar tudo que há ao nosso redor, como o boi devora a erva do campo. Nesse tempo, Balaque, filho de Zipor, era rei de Moabe.

4Moab spoke to the leaders of Midian: "Look, this mob is going to clean us out—a bunch of crows picking a carcass clean."Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time,

5Ele enviou mensageiros para chamar Balaão, filho de Beor, em Petor, que fica junto ao rio, na terra do seu próprio povo, e disse: Um povo que cobre a face da terra saiu do Egito e está acampado bem na minha frente.

5sent emissaries to get Balaam son of Beor, who lived at Pethor on the banks of the Euphrates River, his homeland.Balak's emissaries said, "Look. A people has come up out of Egypt, and they're all over the place! And they're pressing hard on me.

6Peço-te que venhas agora amaldiçoar este povo para mim, pois ele é mais poderoso do que eu. Talvez assim eu o vença e possa expulsá-lo da terra, pois sei que aquele a quem abençoares será abençoado, e aquele a quem amaldiçoares será amaldiçoado.

6Come and curse them for me—they're too much for me. Maybe then I can beat them; we'll attack and drive them out of the country. You have a reputation: Those you bless stay blessed; those you curse stay cursed."

7Então os chefes de Moabe e os chefes de Midiã saíram levando o pagamento pelos encantamentos. Chegando a Balaão, repetiram-lhe as palavras de Balaque.

7The leaders of Moab and Midian were soon on their way, with the fee for the cursing tucked safely in their wallets. When they got to Balaam, they gave him Balak's message.

8E ele lhes respondeu: Ficai aqui esta noite, e vos responderei conforme o SENHOR me falar. Então os chefes de Moabe ficaram com Balaão.

8"Stay here for the night," Balaam said. "In the morning I'll deliver the answer that God gives me."The Moabite nobles stayed with him.

9Então Deus veio a Balaão e perguntou: Quem são estes homens que estão na tua casa?

9Then God came to Balaam. He asked, "So who are these men here with you?"

10Balaão respondeu a Deus: Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei de Moabe, enviou-os a mim, dizendo:

10Balaam answered, "Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent them with a message:

11O povo que saiu do Egito cobre a face da terra. Vem agora amaldiçoá-lo para mim, e talvez eu possa lutar contra ele e expulsá-lo.
MSG
11'Look, the people that came up out of Egypt are all over the place! Come and curse them for me. Maybe then I'll be able to attack and drive them out of the country.' "

12E Deus disse a Balaão: Não irás com eles e não amaldiçoarás este povo, porque é um povo abençoado.
MSG
12God said to Balaam, "Don't go with them. And don't curse the others—they are a blessed people."
AS21
13Balaão levantou-se pela manhã e disse aos chefes de Balaque: Ide para a vossa terra, pois o SENHOR não quer que eu vos acompanhe.

13The next morning Balaam got up and told Balak's nobles, "Go back home; God refuses to give me permission to go with you."

14Então os líderes de Moabe se levantaram, voltaram a Balaque e disseram: Balaão recusou-se a vir conosco.
MSG
14So the Moabite nobles left, came back to Balak, and said, "Balaam wouldn't come with us."

15Mas Balaque tornou a enviar chefes, em maior número e superiores aos anteriores.
MSG
15Balak sent another group of nobles, higher ranking and more distinguished.

16Estes chegaram a Balaão e lhe disseram: Assim diz Balaque, filho de Zipor: Peço-te que não te demores em vir a mim,

16They came to Balaam and said, "Balak son of Zippor says, 'Please, don't refuse to come to me.

17pois te honrarei muito e farei tudo o que me disseres. Peço-te que venhas amaldiçoar este povo para mim.
MSG
17I will honor and reward you lavishly—anything you tell me to do, I'll do; I'll pay anything—only come and curse this people.' "

18Balaão respondeu aos servos de Balaque: Mesmo que Balaque quisesse me dar a sua casa cheia de prata e de ouro, eu não poderia ir contra a ordem do SENHOR, meu Deus, para fazer coisa alguma, nem pequena nem grande.

18Balaam answered Balak's servants: "Even if Balak gave me his house stuffed with silver and gold, I wouldn't be able to defy the orders of my God to do anything, whether big or little.

19Mas peço que fiqueis aqui ainda esta noite, para que eu saiba o que o SENHOR tem a dizer-me.
MSG
19But come along and stay with me tonight as the others did; I'll see what God will say to me this time."
AS21
20Então, de noite, Deus veio a Balaão e disse-lhe: Já que esses homens vieram te chamar, levanta-te e vai com eles. Mas farás somente aquilo que eu te disser.

20God came to Balaam that night and said, "Since these men have come all this way to see you, go ahead and go with them. But make sure you do absolutely nothing other than what I tell you."

21Então, Balaão levantou-se pela manhã, selou sua jumenta e partiu com os chefes de Moabe.

21Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went off with the noblemen from Moab.

22Mas a ira de Deus se acendeu enquanto ele ia, e o anjo do SENHOR se posicionou no caminho como seu adversário. Balaão ia montado em sua jumenta, acompanhado de seus dois servos.

22As he was going, though, God's anger flared. The angel of God stood in the road to block his way. Balaam was riding his donkey, accompanied by his two servants.

23A jumenta viu o anjo do SENHOR parado no caminho com a espada desembainhada na mão. Então, desviando-se, foi pelo campo, mas Balaão bateu na jumenta para fazê-la voltar ao caminho.

23When the donkey saw the angel blocking the road and brandishing a sword, she veered off the road into the ditch. Balaam beat the donkey and got her back on the road.

24Mas o anjo do SENHOR se pôs num caminho apertado entre as vinhas, e havia um muro de um lado e de outro.

24But as they were going through a vineyard, with a fence on either side,

25E, ao ver o anjo do SENHOR, a jumenta encostou no muro, apertando o pé de Balaão; por isso, ele voltou a bater nela.

25the donkey again saw God's angel blocking the way and veered into the fence, crushing Balaam's foot against the fence. Balaam hit her again.

26Então o anjo do SENHOR seguiu mais adiante e colocou-se num lugar apertado, onde não era possível se desviar nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.

26God's angel blocked the way yet again—a very narrow passage this time; there was no getting through on the right or left.

27E, ao ver o anjo do SENHOR, a jumenta deitou-se debaixo de Balaão; e a ira de Balaão se acendeu, e ele bateu na jumenta com o bordão.

27Seeing the angel, Balaam's donkey sat down under him. Balaam lost his temper; he beat the donkey with his stick.

28Nesse momento, o SENHOR abriu a boca da jumenta, e ela perguntou a Balaão: Que foi que te fiz para que me batesses três vezes?

28Then God gave speech to the donkey. She said to Balaam: "What have I ever done to you that you have beat me these three times?"

29Balaão respondeu à jumenta: Tu zombaste de mim. Se eu tivesse uma espada na mão agora, eu te mataria.
MSG
29Balaam said, "Because you've been playing games with me! If I had a sword I would have killed you by now."

30Mas a jumenta disse a Balaão: Por acaso não sou a tua jumenta, em que cavalgaste toda a vida até hoje? Será que tenho o costume de fazer isso contigo? E ele respondeu: Não.

30The donkey said to Balaam, "Am I not your trusty donkey on whom you've ridden for years right up until now? Have I ever done anything like this to you before? Have I?"He said, "No."

31Então o SENHOR abriu os olhos de Balaão, e ele viu o anjo do SENHOR parado no caminho, com a espada desembainhada na mão. Então baixou a cabeça e prostrou-se com o rosto em terra.

31Then God helped Balaam see what was going on: He saw God's angel blocking the way, brandishing a sword. Balaam fell to the ground, his face in the dirt.

32E o anjo do SENHOR perguntou-lhe: Por que já bateste três vezes na tua jumenta? Eu saí como teu adversário, pois teu comportamento é perverso diante de mim.

32God's angel said to him: "Why have you beaten your poor donkey these three times? I have come here to block your way because you're getting way ahead of yourself.

33Mas a jumenta me viu e já se desviou de mim três vezes. Se ela não tivesse se desviado, sem dúvida eu teria te matado, mas a deixaria viva.
MSG
33The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she hadn't, I would have killed you by this time, but not the donkey. I would have let her off."

34Balaão respondeu ao anjo do SENHOR: Pequei, porque não sabia que estavas parado no caminho para te opores a mim. Agora, se isso parece mal aos teus olhos, voltarei.
MSG
34Balaam said to God's angel, "I have sinned. I had no idea you were standing in the road blocking my way. If you don't like what I'm doing, I'll head back."

35Mas o anjo do SENHOR disse a Balaão: Vai com estes homens, mas falarás somente a palavra que eu te disser. E Balaão prosseguiu com os chefes de Balaque.

35But God's angel said to Balaam, "Go ahead and go with them. But only say what I tell you to say—absolutely no other word."And so Balaam continued to go with Balak's nobles.

36Quando Balaque soube que Balaão estava chegando, saiu-lhe ao encontro em Ir-Moabe, cidade de fronteira, à margem do Arnom.

36When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him in the Moabite town that was on the banks of the Arnon, right on the boundary of his land.

37E Balaque perguntou a Balaão: Eu não enviei mensageiros várias vezes para te chamar? Por que não vieste logo? Por acaso eu não poderia pagar-te?
MSG
37Balak said to Balaam, "Didn't I send an urgent message for help? Why didn't you come when I called? Do you think I can't pay you enough?"

38Balaão respondeu a Balaque: Aqui estou eu. Mas, por acaso, falaria eu alguma coisa de mim mesmo? Só falarei a palavra que Deus puser na minha boca.
MSG
38Balaam said to Balak, "Well, I'm here now. But I can't tell you just anything. I can speak only words that God gives me—no others."

39E Balaão foi com Balaque até Quiriate-Huzote.
MSG
39Balaam then accompanied Balak to Kiriath Huzoth (Street-Town).
AS21
40Então Balaque ofereceu bois e ovelhas em sacrifício e enviou parte deles a Balaão e aos chefes que o acompanhavam.
MSG
40Balak slaughtered cattle and sheep for sacrifices and presented them to Balaam and the nobles who were with him.
AS21
41E aconteceu que, pela manhã, Balaque levou Balaão às colinas, aos altares dedicados a Baal, e Balaão viu de lá uma parte do povo.
MSG
41At daybreak Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal (The Heights of Baal) so that he could get a good view of some of the people.
