1And Job again took up his parable, and said,

1Having waited for Zophar, Job now resumed his defense:
ASV
2As God liveth, who hath taken away my right, And the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul:
MSG
2"God-Alive! He's denied me justice!God Almighty! He's ruined my life!
ASV
3(For my life is yet whole in me, And the spirit of God is in my nostrils);
MSG
3But for as long as I draw breath,and for as long as God breathes life into me,
ASV
4Surely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, Neither shall my tongue utter deceit.
MSG
4I refuse to say one word that isn't true.I refuse to confess to any charge that's false.
ASV
5Far be it from me that I should justify you: Till I die I will not put away mine integrity from me.
MSG
5There is no way I'll ever agree to your accusations.I'll not deny my integrity even if it costs me my life.
ASV
6My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: My heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.
MSG
6I'm holding fast to my integrity and not loosening my grip—and, believe me, I'll never regret it.

7Let mine enemy be as the wicked, And let him that riseth up against me be as the unrighteous.

7"Let my enemy be exposed as wicked!Let my adversary be proven guilty!
ASV
8For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, When God taketh away his soul?
MSG
8What hope do people without God have when life is cut short?when God puts an end to life?
ASV
9Will God hear his cry, When trouble cometh upon him?
MSG
9Do you think God will listen to their cry for helpwhen disaster hits?
ASV
10Will he delight himself in the Almighty, And call upon God at all times?
MSG
10What interest have they ever shown in the Almighty?Have they ever been known to pray before?
ASV
11I will teach you concerning the hand of God; That which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.
MSG
11"I've given you a clear account of God in action,suppressed nothing regarding God Almighty.
ASV
12Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; Why then are ye become altogether vain?
MSG
12The evidence is right before you. You can all see it for yourselves,so why do you keep talking nonsense?
ASV
13This is the portion of a wicked man with God, And the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty:
MSG
13"I'll quote your own words back to you:" 'This is how God treats the wicked,this is what evil people can expect from God Almighty:
ASV
14If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.
MSG
14Their children—all of them—will die violent deaths;they'll never have enough bread to put on the table.
ASV
15Those that remain of him shall be buried in death, And his widows shall make no lamentation.
MSG
15They'll be wiped out by the plague,and none of the widows will shed a tear when they're gone.
ASV
16Though he heap up silver as the dust, And prepare raiment as the clay;
MSG
16Even if they make a lot of moneyand are resplendent in the latest fashions,
ASV
17He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, And the innocent shall divide the silver.
MSG
17It's the good who will end up wearing the clothesand the decent who will divide up the money.
ASV
18He buildeth his house as the moth, And as a booth which the keeper maketh.
MSG
18They build elaborate housesthat won't survive a single winter.
ASV
19He lieth down rich, but he shall not be gathered to his fathers; He openeth his eyes, and he is not.
MSG
19They go to bed wealthyand wake up poor.
ASV
20Terrors overtake him like waters; A tempest stealeth him away in the night.
MSG
20Terrors pour in on them like flash floods—a tornado snatches them away in the middle of the night,
ASV
21The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; And it sweepeth him out of his place.
MSG
21A cyclone sweeps them up—gone!Not a trace of them left, not even a footprint.
ASV
22For God shall hurl at him, and not spare: He would fain flee out of his hand.
MSG
22Catastrophes relentlessly pursue them;they run this way and that, but there's no place to hide—
ASV
23Men shall clap their hands at him, And shall hiss him out of his place.
MSG
23Pummeled by the weather,blown to kingdom come by the storm.'
