1O rei Baltazar fez um grande banquete para mil altos funcionários seus e, na presença desses mil, se pôs a beber vinho.

1Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.

2Tocado pelo vinho, Baltazar mandou trazer os cálices de ouro e prata que seu pai, Nabucodonosor, tinha retirado do templo de Jerusalém, para neles beberem o rei, os altos funcionários, suas esposas e concubinas.

2Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from them.

3Trouxeram, pois, os cálices de ouro tirados do templo que havia em Jerusalém; e neles começaram a beber o rei, seus altos funcionários, suas esposas e concubinas.

5Naquele momento surgiu um dedo de mão humana riscando traços no reboco da parede do palácio real. O rei acompanhou com o olhar a mão que riscava.

5In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand came out and wrote near the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace. The king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

6Seu rosto mudou de cor, os pensamentos se embaralharam, sua espinha parecia desconjuntar-se, os joelhos batiam um no outro.

6Then the king’s face was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.

7Aos gritos começou a chamar os magos, feiticeiros e adivinhos, dizendo assim: “Qualquer sábio da Babilônia que seja capaz de decifrar esses traços e dar a sua interpretação, há de vestir a púrpura com o cordão de ouro ao pescoço e será a terceira autoridade no império.

7The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whoever shall read this writing, and show me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

8Vieram todos os sábios da Babilônia, mas nenhum conseguia decifrar os riscos e dar-lhe a interpretação.

8Then came in all the king’s wise men; but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.

9Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his face was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.

10Alarmada com os gritos do rei, a rainha-mãe entrou na sala do banquete e disse: “Viva o rei para sempre! Não deixes tuas idéias se confundirem, nem fiques pálido deste jeito!

10The queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house: the queen spoke and said, O king, live forever; don’t let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your face be changed.

11Existe uma pessoa no teu império que tem o espírito dos deuses santos. No tempo do rei, teu pai, achavam que ele possuía uma inteligência e uma luz parecida com a sabedoria dos deuses. O rei Nabucodonosor, teu pai, fez dele o chefe dos sábios da Babilônia, dos magos, dos feiticeiros e dos astrólogos.

11There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar your father, the king, your father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

12Pois bem, já que esse Daniel, a quem o rei deu o nome de Baltasar, tem tanto espírito, conhecimento e luz para interpretar os sonhos, decifrar os enigmas e desatar os nós, mandai chamá-lo, que ele dará a interpretação.

12because an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of dark sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.

13Daniel foi, então, levado à presença do rei, que lhe perguntou: “És tu esse tal Daniel que meu pai trouxe entre os exilados de Judá?

13Then was Daniel brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, Are you that Daniel, who are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?

14Ouvi falar que tens o espírito dos deuses, que tens muita luz, muita inteligência, muita sabedoria.

14I have heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you.

15À minha presença compareceram sábios e adivinhos para me decifrar estes traços e explicar sua interpretação, mas não foram capazes de me mostrar o significado de nada.

15Now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me its interpretation; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.

16De ti, porém, ouvi falar que és capaz de dar interpretações e de desfazer emaranhados. Agora, então, se fores mesmo capaz de decifrar esses traços e explicar seu significado, irás vestir a púrpura, com o cordão de ouro ao pescoço, como terceira autoridade no meu império”.

16But I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations, and dissolve doubts; now if you can read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

17Daniel respondeu ao rei: “Fica com teus presentes ou dá a outros o teu prêmio. Vou decifrar os traços e explicar o seu significado.

17Then Daniel answered before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another; nevertheless I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

18O Deus Altíssimo foi quem deu o império, a grandeza, o prestígio e a fama ao teu pai, Nabucodonosor.

18You, king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty:

19Por causa da grandeza que Deus lhe deu, todos os povos, nações e línguas temiam e tremiam diante dele, pois ele matava ou deixava vivo a quem queria, exaltava ou humilhava à vontade.

19and because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he killed, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he raised up, and whom he would he put down.

20Ficando, porém com idéias de grandeza e espírito soberbo, orgulhoso, foi derrubado do seu trono real e perdeu a majestade.

20But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

21Foi afastado da companhia dos seres humanos, pois sua mente se tornara igual à dos animais, em cuja companhia passou a morar, alimentando-se de capim como os bois, enquanto o sereno orvalhava-lhe o corpo. Assim ficou, até aprender que o Deus altíssimo é quem manda nos impérios humanos e dá o poder a quem lhe agrada.

21and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the animals’, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky; until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and that he sets up over it whomever he will.

22Tu, porém, filho dele, Baltazar, não tiveste um coração humilde, apesar de saberes disso.

22You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,

23Tu te julgaste maior que o Senhor dos céus e trouxeste para cá os cálices do seu templo, a fim de que tu, teus ministros, esposas e concubinas neles bebessem vinho, louvando os deuses de prata ou ouro, de bronze, de ferro, madeira ou pedra, deuses que não enxergam, não escutam, não entendem. Ao Deus, porém, em cujas mãos está toda a tua vida e todo o teu caminho, tu não glorificaste.

23but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified.

24Foi por isso que ele mandou fazer esses riscos.

24Then was the part of the hand sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.

25Eis o que está naqueles traços: Mina, Siclo e Feres.

26A interpretação disto é a seguinte: Mina vem de contar. Deus contou o tempo do teu reinado e já acabou.

26This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God has counted your kingdom, and brought it to an end;

27Siclo vem de pesar: Deus te pesou na balança e te faltava peso.

27TEKEL; you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.

28Feres vem de dividir: o teu império será dividido e entregue aos medos e aos persas”.

28PERES; your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

29Baltazar mandou vestir Daniel com a púrpura e colocar-lhe ao pescoço o cordão de ouro, proclamando-o terceira autoridade no império.

29Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30Nessa mesma noite, porém, Baltazar o rei dos caldeus foi morto.

30In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.

31Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.
