1Yahweh’s angel came up from Gilgal to Bochim. He said, “I brought you out of Egypt, and have brought you to the land which I swore to give your fathers. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you.

2com a condição de não fazerdes aliança com os habitantes desta terra, mas destruirdes seus altares. Vós, porém, não quisestes ouvir a minha voz. Por que essa desobediência?

2You shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land. You shall break down their altars.’ But you have not listened to my voice. Why have you done this?

3Por isso, eu vos digo: não expulsarei esses povos da vossa presença, eles serão vossos adversários e seus deuses serão vossa ruína”.

3Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.’”

5Por isso aquele lugar foi chamado Boquim, ~ lugar dos que choram. E ofereceram ali sacrifícios ao SENHOR.

5They called the name of that place Bochim, and they sacrificed there to Yahweh.

6Depois que Josué despedira o povo, os israelitas partiram cada qual para a sua herança, a fim de tomar posse do território.

6Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel each went to his inheritance to possess the land.

7Serviram ao SENHOR durante toda a vida de Josué e dos anciãos que lhe sobreviveram por muito tempo e tinham visto toda a grandiosa obra que o SENHOR fizera em favor de Israel.

7The people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Yahweh that he had worked for Israel.

8Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Yahweh, died, being one hundred ten years old.

9They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath Heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

10Mas depois que toda aquela geração foi unir-se a seus pais, vieram outros, que não conheceram o SENHOR, nem a obra que ele fizera em favor de Israel.

10After all that generation were gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them, who didn’t know Yahweh, nor the work which he had done for Israel.

11Os israelitas ofenderam o SENHOR e serviram aos ídolos de Baal.

12Abandonaram o SENHOR, Deus de seus pais, que os havia tirado do Egito, e seguiram a outros deuses, os deuses dos povos que os rodeavam. Prostraram-se diante deles, provocando a ira do SENHOR.

12They abandoned Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; and they provoked Yahweh to anger.

13Abandonaram o SENHOR e serviram aos ídolos de Baal e de Astarte.

13They abandoned Yahweh, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

14Por isso acendeu-se contra Israel a ira do SENHOR, que os entregou às mãos dos salteadores, que os saqueavam. Ele os vendeu aos inimigos que habitavam as redondezas e eles não puderam mais resistir aos adversários.

14Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

15Em tudo o que desejassem empreender, a mão do SENHOR estava contra eles, para sua desgraça, como lhes havia dito e jurado. A aflição deles era extrema.

15Wherever they went out, Yahweh’s hand was against them for evil, as Yahweh had spoken, and as Yahweh had sworn to them; and they were very distressed.

16Então o SENHOR suscitou juízes que os livrassem das mãos dos saqueadores.

16Yahweh raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them.

17Eles, porém, nem aos seus juízes quiseram ouvir, mas continuavam a prostituir-se com outros deuses, prostrando-se diante deles. Depressa afastaram-se do caminho seguido por seus pais, que haviam obedecido aos mandamentos do SENHOR; não procederam como eles.

17Yet they didn’t listen to their judges; for they prostituted themselves to other gods, and bowed themselves down to them. They turned aside quickly out of the way in which their fathers walked, obeying Yahweh’s commandments. They didn’t do so.

18Sempre que suscitava juízes, o SENHOR estava com o juiz. Enquanto o juiz vivia, o SENHOR livrava os israelitas das mãos dos inimigos, pois ele se deixava comover pelos gemidos que surgiam da opressão e da aflição.

18When Yahweh raised up judges for them, then Yahweh was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it grieved Yahweh because of their groaning by reason of those who oppressed them and troubled them.

19Mas, quando o juiz morria, voltavam a cair e portavam-se pior que seus pais, seguindo outros deuses, servindo-os e prostrando-se diante deles. Não desistiram de suas práticas perversas nem de sua conduta obstinada.

19But when the judge was dead, they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them. They didn’t cease what they were doing, or give up their stubborn ways.

20O SENHOR se tomou de ira contra Israel e disse: “Já que esse povo transgrediu a aliança que estabeleci com seus pais e não deu ouvido a minha voz,

20Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel; and he said, “Because this nation transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to my voice,

21também eu não expulsarei diante deles nenhuma das nações que Josué deixou quando morreu.

21I also will no longer drive out any of the nations that Joshua left when he died from before them;

22Por meio delas, quero testar Israel, para ver se segue ou não pelo caminho do SENHOR, como fizeram os seus pais”.

22that by them I may test Israel, to see if they will keep the Yahweh’s way to walk therein, as their fathers kept it, or not.”

23Por isso, o SENHOR tolerou aquelas nações e não as quis expulsar logo, nem as entregou às mãos de Josué.

23So Yahweh left those nations, without driving them out hastily. He didn’t deliver them into Joshua’s hand.
