1Jerobaal ( isto é, Gedeão ) levantou-se bem cedo. Ele e suas tropas acamparam junto à fonte de Harad. O exército de Madiã estava acampado mais a norte, no vale ao lado da colina de Moré.

1Jerub-Baal (Gideon) got up early the next morning, all his troops right there with him. They set up camp at Harod's Spring. The camp of Midian was in the plain, north of them near the Hill of Moreh.

2O SENHOR disse a Gedeão: “Estás levando gente demais contigo para que eu entregue Madiã a suas mãos. Israel poderia gloriar-se às minhas custas, dizendo: ‘Foi minha mão que me salvou’.

2God said to Gideon, "You have too large an army with you. I can't turn Midian over to them like this—they'll take all the credit, saying, 'I did it all myself,' and forget about me.

3Portanto, dá este aviso a todo mundo: ‘Quem estiver com medo e a tremer, que volte e se retire do monte Gelboé’”. Então vinte e dois mil homens da tropa voltaram, enquanto só dez mil ficaram.

3Make a public announcement: 'Anyone afraid, anyone who has any qualms at all, may leave Mount Gilead now and go home.' " Twenty-two companies headed for home. Ten companies were left.

4O SENHOR tornou a falar a Gedeão: “Ainda há gente demais. Manda-os descer até à água. Lá, eu farei a seleção para ti. Quando eu te disser ‘este vai contigo’, ele irá; de quem eu te disser ‘este não vai contigo’, esse voltará”.

4God said to Gideon: "There are still too many. Take them down to the stream and I'll make a final cut. When I say, 'This one goes with you,' he'll go. When I say, 'This one doesn't go,' he won't go."

5Gedeão mandou o povo descer até à água. E o SENHOR lhe disse: “Põe de um lado os que lamberem a água com a língua, como faz o cão; e os que beberem ajoelhados, põe do outro”.

5So Gideon took the troops down to the stream.God said to Gideon: "Everyone who laps with his tongue, the way a dog laps, set on one side. And everyone who kneels to drink, drinking with his face to the water, set to the other side."

6Os que lamberam a água — levando-a à boca com as mãos — foram trezentos. Todo o resto do povo bebeu a água ajoelhado.

6Three hundred lapped with their tongues from their cupped hands. All the rest knelt to drink.

7O SENHOR disse a Gedeão: “Eu vos salvarei com os trezentos homens que lamberam a água, entregando os madianitas em tuas mãos. E todo o resto do povo pode ir para casa”.

7God said to Gideon: "I'll use the three hundred men who lapped at the stream to save you and give Midian into your hands. All the rest may go home."

8As provisões e as trombetas foram destinadas aos que iriam lutar. Ao restante dos israelitas, Gedeão ordenou que se retirassem para as suas tendas, enquanto reteve os trezentos consigo. Abaixo deles, no vale, estava o acampamento dos madianitas.

8After Gideon took all their provisions and trumpets, he sent all the Israelites home. He took up his position with the three hundred. The camp of Midian stretched out below him in the valley.

9Naquela mesma noite, o SENHOR disse a Gedeão: “Levanta-te e desce até ao acampamento. Eu o entreguei em tuas mãos.

11e, ao ouvires o que estão falando, te sentirás encorajado. Então poderás atacar o acampamento com segurança”. Ele desceu com o escudeiro Fara até os postos avançados do acampamento.

11when you hear what they're saying, you'll be bold and confident." He and his armor bearer Purah went down near the place where sentries were posted.

12Os madianitas, os amalecitas e todos os do Oriente estavam espalhados pelo vale como uma enxame de gafanhotos. O número dos camelos era incalculável como a areia das praias do mar.

12Midian and Amalek, all the easterners, were spread out on the plain like a swarm of locusts. And their camels! Past counting, like grains of sand on the seashore!

13Quando Gedeão se aproximou, ouviu um homem contar um sonho ao companheiro: “Tive um sonho”, dizia ele. “Vi como que um pão de cevada, que descia rolando sobre o acampamento de Madiã. Ao alcançar a tenda, bateu nela, derrubou-a e a tenda caiu por terra”.

13Gideon arrived just in time to hear a man tell his friend a dream. He said, "I had this dream: A loaf of barley bread tumbled into the Midianite camp. It came to the tent and hit it so hard it collapsed. The tent fell!"

14O companheiro comentou: “Isto só pode ser a espada de Gedeão filho de Joás, o israelita. Deus entregou Madiã e todo o acampamento em suas mãos”.

14His friend said, "This has to be the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite! God has turned Midian—the whole camp!—over to him."

15Quando ouviu contar o sonho e a interpretação, Gedeão prostrou-se; depois voltou ao acampamento de Israel e disse: “Levantai-vos! O SENHOR entregou o acampamento de Madiã em vossas mãos! ”

15When Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he went to his knees before God in prayer. Then he went back to the Israelite camp and said, "Get up and get going! God has just given us the Midianite army!"

16Então Gedeão dividiu os trezentos homens em três batalhões e entregou a todos trombetas e cântaros vazios, com uma tocha acesa dentro.

16He divided the three hundred men into three companies. He gave each man a trumpet and an empty jar, with a torch in the jar.

17Disse-lhes: “Olhai para mim e fazei como eu. Quando eu entrar pelos postos avançados do acampamento, fazei o mesmo que eu fizer.

17He said, "Watch me and do what I do. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly what I do.

18Quando eu e os que estão comigo tocarmos as trombetas que temos na mão, tocai também as vossas trombetas ao redor do acampamento e gritai todos juntos: ‘Pelo Senhor e por Gedeão! ’”.

18When I and those with me blow the trumpets, you also, all around the camp, blow your trumpets and shout, 'For God and for Gideon!' "

19E Gedeão, com os cem homens que o acompanhavam, entrou pelo posto avançado do acampamento, no início do turno de guarda da meia-noite, no momento em que se fazia a troca das sentinelas. Gedeão e seus companheiros começaram a tocar as trombetas e a quebrar os cântaros que levavam na mão.

19Gideon and his hundred men got to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the sentries had been posted. They blew the trumpets, at the same time smashing the jars they carried.

20Então também os três batalhões tocaram as trombetas e quebraram os cântaros. Segurando as tochas com a mão direita e as trombetas com a esquerda, tocavam e gritavam: “Espada pelo Senhor e por Gedeão! ”.

20All three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands, ready to blow, and shouted, "A sword for God and for Gideon!"

21Cada um ficava em seu posto ao redor do acampamento. Imediatamente, todo o acampamento se pôs em desordem. Dando grandes gritos, fugiram,

21They were stationed all around the camp, each man at his post. The whole Midianite camp jumped to its feet. They yelled and fled.

22enquanto os trezentos israelitas continuavam tocando as trombetas. E o SENHOR fez com que, em todo o acampamento, voltassem a espada uns contra os outros e debandassem até Bet-Seta, na direção de Sereda, até à fronteira de Abel-Meula, perto de Tebat.

22When the three hundred blew the trumpets, God aimed each Midianite's sword against his companion, all over the camp. They ran for their lives—to Beth Shittah, toward Zererah, to the border of Abel Meholah near Tabbath.

23Então os israelitas de Neftali, de Aser e das duas partes de Manassés foram convocados para perseguir os madianitas.

23Israelites rallied from Naphtali, from Asher, and from all over Manasseh. They had Midian on the run.

24Gedeão enviou mensageiros por toda a montanha de Efraim para avisar: “Descei contra os madianitas e tomai-lhes as fontes d´água até Bet-Bera e † os vaus do Jordão”. Todos os homens de Efraim foram convocados e ocuparam as fontes d’água até Bet-Bera e † os vaus do Jordão.

24Gideon then sent messengers through all the hill country of Ephraim, urging them, "Come down against Midian! Capture the fords of the Jordan at Beth Barah."

25Capturaram dois chefes madianitas, Oreb e Zeb; mataram Oreb no rochedo de Oreb e Zeb no lagar de Zeb. Perseguiram os madianitas e depois levaram as cabeças de Oreb e Zeb a Gedeão, que se encontrava do outro lado do Jordão.

25So all the men of Ephraim rallied and captured the fords of the Jordan at Beth Barah. They also captured the two Midianite commanders Oreb (Raven) and Zeeb (Wolf). They killed Oreb at Raven Rock; Zeeb they killed at Wolf Winepress. And they pressed the pursuit of Midian. They brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon across the Jordan.
