1The congregation in Antioch was blessed with a number of prophet-preachers and teachers: Barnabas, Simon, nicknamed Niger, Lucius the Cyrenian, Manaen, an advisor to the ruler Herod, Saul.

1Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was , prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

2One day as they were worshiping God—they were also fasting as they waited for guidance—the Holy Spirit spoke: "Take Barnabas and Saul and commission them for the work I have called them to do."

2While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'

3So they commissioned them. In that circle of intensity and obedience, of fasting and praying, they laid hands on their heads and sent them off.

3Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

4Sent off on their new assignment by the Holy Spirit, Barnabas and Saul went down to Seleucia and caught a ship for Cyprus.

5The first thing they did when they put in at Salamis was preach God's Word in the Jewish meeting places. They had John along to help out as needed.

5When they reached Salamis, they to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they also had John as their helper.

6They traveled the length of the island, and at Paphos came upon a Jewish wizard

6When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus,

7who had worked himself into the confidence of the governor, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man not easily taken in by charlatans. The wizard's name was Bar-Jesus. He was as crooked as a corkscrew. The governor invited Barnabas and Saul in, wanting to hear God's Word firsthand from them.

7who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.

8But Dr. Know-It-All (that's the wizard's name in plain English) stirred up a ruckus, trying to divert the governor from becoming a believer.

8But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.

9But Saul (or Paul), full of the Holy Spirit and looking him straight in the eye, said,

9But Saul, who was also Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him,

10"You bag of wind, you parody of a devil—why, you stay up nights inventing schemes to cheat people out of God.

10and said, 'You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord?

11But now you've come up against God himself, and your game is up. You're about to go blind—no sunlight for you for a good long stretch." He was plunged immediately into a shadowy mist and stumbled around, begging people to take his hand and show him the way.

11'Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time.' And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand.

12When the governor saw what happened, he became a believer, full of enthusiasm over what they were saying about the Master.

12Then the proconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at the teaching of the Lord.

13From Paphos, Paul and company put out to sea, sailing on to Perga in Pamphylia. That's where John called it quits and went back to Jerusalem.

13Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia; but John left them and returned to Jerusalem.

14From Perga the rest of them traveled on to Antioch in Pisidia. On the Sabbath they went to the meeting place and took their places.

14But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.

15After the reading of the Scriptures—God's Law and the Prophets—the president of the meeting asked them, "Friends, do you have anything you want to say? A word of encouragement, perhaps?"

15After the reading of the Law and the Prophets the synagogue officials sent to them, saying, 'Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.'

16Paul stood up, paused and took a deep breath, then said, "Fellow Israelites and friends of God, listen.

16Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, 'Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:

17God took a special interest in our ancestors, pulled our people who were beaten down in Egyptian exile to their feet, and led them out of there in grand style.

17'The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out from it.

18He took good care of them for nearly forty years in that godforsaken wilderness

18'For a period of about forty years He put up with them in the wilderness.

19and then, having wiped out seven enemies who stood in the way, gave them the land of Canaan for their very own—

19'When He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land as an inheritance-- about four hundred and fifty years.

20a span in all of about four hundred fifty years. "Up to the time of Samuel the prophet, God provided judges to lead them.

21But then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul, son of Kish, out of the tribe of Benjamin. After Saul had ruled forty years,

21'Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

22God removed him from office and put King David in his place, with this commendation: 'I've searched the land and found this David, son of Jesse. He's a man whose heart beats to my heart, a man who will do what I tell him.'

22'After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, 'I HAVE FOUND DAVID the son of Jesse, A MAN AFTER MY HEART, who will do all My will.'

23"From out of David's descendants God produced a Savior for Israel, Jesus, exactly as he promised—

23'From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus,

24but only after John had thoroughly alerted the people to his arrival by preparing them for a total life-change.

24after John had proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25As John was finishing up his work, he said, 'Did you think I was the One? No, I'm not the One. But the One you've been waiting for all these years is just around the corner, about to appear. And I'm about to disappear.'

25'And while John was completing his course, he kept saying, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not . But behold, one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.'

26"Dear brothers and sisters, children of Abraham, and friends of God, this message of salvation has been precisely targeted to you.

26'Brethren, sons of Abraham's family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.

27The citizens and rulers in Jerusalem didn't recognize who he was and condemned him to death.

27'For those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, recognizing neither Him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled by condemning .

28They couldn't find a good reason, but demanded that Pilate execute him anyway.

28'And though they found no ground for death, they asked Pilate that He be executed.

29They did just what the prophets said they would do, but had no idea they were following to the letter the script of the prophets, even though those same prophets are read every Sabbath in their meeting places. "After they had done everything the prophets said they would do, they took him down from the cross and buried him.

29'When they had carried out all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a tomb.

30And then God raised him from death.

30'But God raised Him from the dead;

31There is no disputing that—he appeared over and over again many times and places to those who had known him well in the Galilean years, and these same people continue to give witness that he is alive.

31and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people.

32"And we're here today bringing you good news: the Message that what God promised the fathers

32'And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers,

33has come true for the children—for us! He raised Jesus, exactly as described in the second Psalm: My Son! My very own Son! Today I celebrate you!

33that God has fulfilled this to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, 'YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.'

34"When he raised him from the dead, he did it for good—no going back to that rot and decay for him. That's why Isaiah said, 'I'll give to all of you David's guaranteed blessings.'

34' that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: 'I WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY SURE OF DAVID.'

35So also the psalmist's prayer: 'You'll never let your Holy One see death's rot and decay.'

35'Therefore He also says in another , 'YOU WILL NOT ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.'

36"David, of course, having completed the work God set out for him, has been in the grave, dust and ashes, a long time now.

36'For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay;

37But the One God raised up—no dust and ashes for him!

37but He whom God raised did not undergo decay.

38I want you to know, my very dear friends, that it is on account of this resurrected Jesus that the forgiveness of your sins can be promised.

38'Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,

39He accomplishes, in those who believe, everything that the Law of Moses could never make good on. But everyone who believes in this raised-up Jesus is declared good and right and whole before God.

39and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.

40"Don't take this lightly. You don't want the prophet's sermon to describe you:

40'Therefore take heed, so that the thing spoken of in the Prophets may not come upon :

41Watch out, cynics; Look hard—watch your world fall to pieces. I'm doing something right before your eyes That you won't believe, though it's staring you in the face."

41'BEHOLD, YOU SCOFFERS, AND MARVEL, AND PERISH; FOR I AM ACCOMPLISHING A WORK IN YOUR DAYS, A WORK WHICH YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE, THOUGH SOMEONE SHOULD DESCRIBE IT TO YOU.''

42When the service was over, Paul and Barnabas were invited back to preach again the next Sabbath.

42As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.

43As the meeting broke up, a good many Jews and converts to Judaism went along with Paul and Barnabas, who urged them in long conversations to stick with what they'd started, this living in and by God's grace.

43Now when the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God.

44When the next Sabbath came around, practically the whole city showed up to hear the Word of God.

44The next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord.

45Some of the Jews, seeing the crowds, went wild with jealousy and tore into Paul, contradicting everything he was saying, making an ugly scene.

45But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming.

46But Paul and Barnabas didn't back down. Standing their ground they said, "It was required that God's Word be spoken first of all to you, the Jews. But seeing that you want no part of it—you've made it quite clear that you have no taste or inclination for eternal life—the door is open to all the outsiders. And we're on our way through it,

46Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, 'It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

47following orders, doing what God commanded when he said, I've set you up as light to all nations. You'll proclaim salvation to the four winds and seven seas!"

47'For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.''

48When the non-Jewish outsiders heard this, they could hardly believe their good fortune. All who were marked out for real life put their trust in God—they honored God's Word by receiving that life.

48When the Gentiles heard this, they rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

49And this Message of salvation spread like wildfire all through the region.

49And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region.

50Some of the Jews convinced the most respected women and leading men of the town that their precious way of life was about to be destroyed. Alarmed, they turned on Paul and Barnabas and forced them to leave.

50But the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.

51Paul and Barnabas shrugged their shoulders and went on to the next town, Iconium,

51But they shook off the dust of their feet against them and went to Iconium.

52brimming with joy and the Holy Spirit, two happy disciples.

52And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
